I lost my wife in May due to cancer. Now I am alone with our 2 yrs old son. She loved to play her songs, I didn't know Katie Melua before. With this song we said good bye to Agnieszka at the funeral. He was a big burley guy, but his heart was as soft as butter. We're playing this at his memorial on Dec 5th. Miss him.

Came across this quite by accident. Never heard this on the radio, never saw it on tv or in the charts and its probably the best most poignant song ive ever heard. Absolutely stunningly beautiful. Shame on you all the radio stations and tv shows that would rather have xfactor or pop idol wannabes on them instead of true amazing talent.

I think it's about grief, as the lyrics imply. Grieving is a repeated process.
The woman seems to be grieving the man (maybe her husband or a friend or family member). When he died, she wrapped him around her being, carrying on his appearance, demeanor etc. But she's here for a change (healing), so the barber took that appearance apart and revealed her. But in the end, she continued to grieve, and went back on taking his appearance.
It can be vice versa. The man grieving the woman. Barber took him apart and revealed her from the inside, meaning he carried her in his heart. In the end, he's back to himself, but who's to say she's not there if he were to be taken apart again?

One of the most beautiful songs that I’ve ever heard that gives me new understanding for a dear friend who committed suicide. He was a gifted musician that was so sensitive. I believe he has finally found true peace in a new heavenly realm. I cry every time I listen to this song and it gives me peace about his sad departure from this beautiful yet sometimes cruel world.

So very touching, Aneema. I have often heard this poignant song but I have never seen the video before. At the end, when the pieces were removed from her face, and tears started to flow from her eye, the lyrics to the song and their meaning really hit me. It reminds me how little compassion there is in this world most of the time. For me, crying is not a sign of weekness, it is a sign of caring for others. I think the video means that the guy was dumped by the girl because he didn't fit in her world but the memory of her crying for him is still inside his head.
This video is one of the most creative and well-executed pieces of musical art I have ever seen. The returning of the person back to the original man figure was brilliant. If Katie ever gives a concert in Beijing, I'd use one of the 9 million bikes to travel to the concert. If my wife died before I, this music would be played at her funeral; and then I would literally become a "hopeless drifter." I had a good friend who died and on his funeral day, it rained all day as if the sky cried for him.

Soon he was on the floor playing the latest, coolest video games with all the kids. At his memorial the Asian students told of how they sat next to him in class for he was so much smarter. Everybody loved John, he was the life of the party. He was only 41. He knows I shed tears when I play this beautiful song. It's me saying hello, I will see you again.

I lost my mother due to her being raped and she got a deadly HIV-strain. She soon died thereafter. in the same year my lover left me for someone else - I also lost my business in the same year. I ended up seeking comfort in one night stands and narcotics. I am now rehabilitated, discovered I suffer of a sever depressive disorder. Things do get better. This song is my bridge to the sad memories of my lover and I. It also brings my mother's spirit closer to heart. Inspiring song....

With the recent release of the film "The Da Vinci Code," there's a lot of speculation on Mary Magdalene and the implication that she was involved with Jesus. I found that there was some discussion that this song may have been a Mary Magdalene reference, and I was wondering if you could expound on that.
_*Katie Melua*_:Funnily enough, you're one of the few people that ever caught onto that. It's not really from "The Da Vinci Code," it's more from the book, Holy Blood, Holy Grail, which is one of the first ever books that introduced the idea of Mary Magdalene and Jesus.
The reason why I wrote the song was because I met Michael Baigent, who was the writer of Holy Blood, Holy Grail, and we just got into this discussion, and he told me his theory. And it just kind of really inspired me, purely from the point of view that... Everyone's getting really uptight about the whole religious aspect of it, and to me, I kind of just wanted to look at it in a different point of view. Let's, just for argument's sake, pretend that it really did happen. Maybe they really were in a relationship of some sort, maybe they were married. Imagine the suffering that she'd have had to have gone through to see someone she loved so dearly go through that much while he's being crucified.
And suddenly I just had all these waves of emotion, and I thought this could be a song. I don't really look at it as purely being about Mary sort of missing Jesus or anything like that, but that was kind of where the song came from for me. Now a lot of people listen to that song and they can relate it to anyone that they've ever lost. I didn't want to be all about the controversy of the whole religious thing. Let's just pretend it's a love story for a second, and it could be a really nice love story.
