Regarding laundry: I made my first overseas trip in 2023 and I needed to wash my clothes. (I hadn't planned on it but i needed to). I was in Paris and there was a laundromat a block away from my hotel. It was inexpensive and only took 90 minutes. The washer was 30 minutes and the drier was 40 minutes- and the extra time in there is because I needed to get detergent and figure out how to use the facility.
90 minutes to read a book, chat with locals and other tourists in the laundromat, and then i had clean clothes fro the rest of my stay. It's not a big deal.

I take my older underwear, toss it as I go and just buy new underwear when I get home. I only travel once a year so underwear needs replacing anyway.

I love that people have addressed the issue of weighed carry on, as an Australian/New Zealander I always find it so discouraging when watching these type of videos a lot of which are US based travel enthusiasts who will VLOG how they can pack ALL the things in carry on without mentioning once the weight restrictions because it doesn't seem to apply with US carriers. As us fellow Aussies know, our carriers will often weigh our carry on and make people pay and check it into cargo if you are overweight, have seen people scrambling many a time when been caught out with overweight carry on deciding what they can throw in the trash and leave behind 😮

Excellent video! I love the tips you present.
I recommend putting your footwear in a plastic bag before packing them in your suitcase/bag. The bottom of your shoes/sandals touch all kinds of surfaces, including public bathrooms and dirty streets. A grocery bag will shield your clothes from whatever you stepped on.

For someone who travels internationally frequently on planes (large and small) the 1st STEP is to know:
A0) Does the airline place a weight restriction on what you bring on the plane (by bag or combined bags)?
A1) Will my bag(s) be weighed at the gate?
A2) Does the airline cite specific measurement restrictions on an overhead and/or underseat bag?
A3) Is there a fee structure for bringing a carry-on bag on the plane?
While this may not always hold true, MOST airlines are moving to the 7kg (15 lbs) weight limit for the COMBINED bags one brings on the plane therefore, you may want to invest in an inexpensive expandable bag (not expanded for underseat, expanded for overhead use) around 0.907 kg or 2 lbs unpacked. NOTE: Bring a packable bag/tote with you and keep it in your pocket should the gate REQUIRE you to gate-check your carry-on due to a flight being full. You can then x-fer items you must keep with you (electronics, jewelry, passports, customs documents, etc.) at all times - plan for this contingency as if happens more often than not.
2nd STEP - Contact the Places You Will Be Lodging as they can tell you exactly what they provide for a) bathing (soap, shampoo, conditioner, umbrellas, etc.), b) laundry, c) and other needs (tissues). What the lodging does not provide, you can ask about a store close by should you choose to buy small sizes of things you might need upon arrival. Remember, most international long haul flights usually provide amenity kits (you can always ask for a 2nd kit).
3rd STEP Purchase an inexpensive packable bag to carry in your pocket or coat. Once you arrive on the plane, all the things you carry on your person (phone, headphones, keys, water bottle. etc. can be placed in the packable bag leaving more available space in your primary bag. Bring a pocket size portable scale on your trip as you DO NOT want to get to the airport to realize your bag is too heavy upon return as it may cost you $$$$.
    Hope these tips help.

I travel internationally a couple of times a year from Australia, usually on Emirates or Singapore or Qantas. My packing strategy and capsule wardrobe is almost identical to what was packed in the video. You have to be absolutely ruthless and weigh your bag as you’re packing, but it can be done! You need to use a lightweight fabric carryon (mine is 1.9 kg), carefully select lightweight clothing items, decant all your toiletries and minimise all other extraneous “stuff” we like to pack. Although the above mentioned airlines say 1 bag max 7 kg, they all allow me onboard with a carryon, small backpack and small cross-body bag. Only my carryon is weighed and I keep it at 7 kg. My backpack has my toiletries, makeup, medication, headphones, electric toothbrush and iPad. It probably weighs another 4 kg? I’m not sure but it has never been weighed and i have done this many times. I admit I’m quite anal about packing. Sometimes I weigh my tops and pants before selecting which items go in the bag! I buy shampoo etc when I arrive and anything I buy overseas I ship home (or check my carryon on the way home). Start by getting the lightest bag or backpack you can find and work from there. You can definitely do carryon from Australia. It’s frustrating and packing takes time and patience, but it can be done.

@@ellybea68 The Premium aisles tend to not put customer through bag weighing and allow a carry-on and personal item YET I am seeing low cost airlines trickle into the traditional carriers. AirFrance only allows Economy travelers 12 kg of carry-on weight while business get 18 kg. Weight mgmt is the key

Same here…switched my carryon as it was about an inch too big. And they check!!! this large bag would need to be checked…switch to soft and light. Then strip all unnecessary items out or you’ll be over the size or weight limit for ex-US in a second! They are getting really brutal!

In reference to the 7kg CO limit, what are most airlines? Every domestic and international carrier we’ve extensively flown with is around 10 kg for the CO overhead bag. The only exceptions have been RyanAir and ITA but that is because we haven’t been to Australia or Asia.

I always use panty liners and light weight nylon or silk camies. The liners get tossed each day and the camies are easily washed with Eucalon hand wash laundry product. I wash them while I teak a shower. They don't need rinsing with the Eucalon. Two camies are just fine, I alternate them and they dry easily over night.

Omg I totally agree with keeping toiletries in the personal item bag! I would usually keep my second pair of shoes, electronics, and possibly one outfit in there too. That way, my carry on is mostly clothes and lighter for when I have to haul it above my head on the plane.

I’m from Australia and this amount of clothing is fine. You can’t pack much more than that though. I’ve managed COO with 11-12 pieces of clothing and 3 pairs of shoes, wearing the heaviest items on the plane and kept my bag to 7 kg but my toiletries were all in my small backpack, along with my mini iPad, wallet, passport etc. it can be done, even with our 7 kg bag limits. It’s not easy though. You have to be ruthless and take only what you absolutely need and nothing more.

I am a huge fan of Unbound Merino. When my husband and I went to Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland for 6 weeks in the autumn of 2023, we both packed carry-on backpack only with predominantly Unbound Merino. My only bottoms were UM's womens travel pants that are unavailable at the moment on their website. I have every colour in the boxy pocket tee and use them not just for minimal packing, but also for my job as a registered nurse. Since I am Canadian, shipping is super quick.

Compete with locals . Clean neat and appropriately covered .

Nice. I’m planning a trip to the top of Norway this summer and am going carry-on only, with an 8kg limit. It will be chilly, and I’m relying on lots of merino, and wearing my lined travel pants, boots, and coat on the plane. I’m trying to pack as little toiletries as possible. One thing I found that is helpful is that Olay makes dry facial cleansing cloths that are activated by water. I stick a few of those in a baggie in the way nothing and don’t count as liquids. I also have bought a few stick balms that are not liquids, like Vaseline and Aquaphor.

I have been travelling extensively around the world for the last 15 yrs. If you don’t want to stick out as a tourist, there are lot of stylish clothing that can be mixed and matched, layered, light, breathable, very packable and easy to wash. Same with shoes. Packing cubes are the best for carry on. I never pack jeans way to bulky or men like t-shirts to casual especially for travelling in Europe. Shorts, yoga attire and safari type clothing big no no in Europe. Travel size Curling iron would take less space.

Actually, havaianas or other very flat shoes with little to no support are very bad for your feet and back. You shouldn't walk around too much with them. There's havaiana models that have some more straps which go around the back of your foot, and those provide some extra hold, but it's still not ideal...

They lasted much longer to my Birkenstock which only lasted 1 summer in France and they got really smelly and gave me blisters - despite getting them sized for me in a Birkenstock shop in Hamburg Germany. Whereas the flipflops i could wash in the washing machine. They were perfect as well on rainy days like in South Africa. I know once we're used to them they can be quite comfy. I've never had birkenstocks, never tried them either. They seem all the rage but I don't really like how they look, plus they're quite bulky to pack for a trip... To each their own, I guess.

I love your channel and I’m so glad I found this video as my friend and I are going to the Netherlands and Belgium in April, Bruges and Antwerp, the latter to visit a friend for a couple of days, and then a one week tulip bike tour. I definitely want to do carry-on so your video is quite timely and I shared it with my friend and others. Question: 🙋🏼 the bike tour guide suggested we bring a weatherproof windproof jacket and I’m going to go look at the Patagonia one you mentioned. Thank you also for the links which really are most helpful. Will this very-thin easily-packable jacket keep me dry in rainy weather and does it have to be layered for cooler conditions? I ask because I am also taking a Road Scholar tour to Scotland in July, and this jacket may be useful for that, too. So excited to have found you. Now, if anyone has some recommendations for lodging in Bruges or Antwerp, please let me know. My friend who lives in Antwerp suggested a B&B, but it’s so small that it’s already filled up. Thank you!

You pack just like me! Almost. Because I’m in Australia, I need to keep my international carryon bag weight to a maximum of 7kg , so I use a lightweight fabric bag rather than a hard shell bag. My small back-pack is smaller than yours but we have the same packing strategy and pack an almost identical capsule wardrobe. Well done on a great packing video! I have sent your video to my daughter who will be going to Europe in April and is attempting carryon for the first time. She is a serious over packer, so it will be a major achievement for her if she can do it!

I ll pay a bit extra nxt time just to be able to take personal item and 30l backpack..never ever checking in again after bag got lost 2 weeks with no compensation. Unsure re merino as quite costly probably will go for a heattec top.. packing easy for summer but not longterm 4 seasons as asthmatic need lot of meds and very thick clothes in winter.

Have you considered keeping AirTags in all your bags? Whether we cruise or fly, we always use them. 1) Saved us from having a bag left at the cruise terminal, 2) Helped us locate our bags at Schiphol airport after being given the wrong carousel information. I try to avoid checking a bag but sometimes an airline will force you to gate-check your bag when flights are full.

In Europe it is much less weight you are allowed in your carry on , which makes it much harder as I have noticed that Americans seems to have not that way and every time I see the pack videos , I am like, that will be over the weight limit. / Lives in Sweden.

I travel only in Europe (so far) and mostly on the budget airlines (Wizz, Ryan) and I have never had my carry-on bag weighted, neither have seen anyone who had. Checking size on the suspiciously large bags - yes, seen that, but weighting only occurred for checked-in baggage, not the carry-on. I don't even know how much my standard carry-on packing list weights, because I never had to worry about it 😅

I am a man and choose functional clothing over style so for me that seems like a lot of clothing for 10 days. I have been a minimalist packer since I returned from a 7 week trip to USA with several items of clothing not even touched. Certainly some good tips here though, especially merino which I've been using for over 20 years.
My main question is one of weight as that is where one can run foul of airline regulations. I realise business class etc have higher limits. Just curious what the combined weight is of this luggage. As others mention here in Australia the combined weight is 7kg unless you purchase more.

Maybe this is a Mars/Venus thing, but I know that my P2 packs a fraction of this for trips of 15+ days and manages just fine. Merino is awesome, but it is perfect for underwear and 5 pairs is plenty.
Do people actually still pack hair dryers/flat irons and full-size toiletries? YMMV, but I know that she would consider a third pair of shoes to be overkill.
My packing list for 12 days in Spain...
    - 3 pairs of pants (wear 1 on the plane)
    - 3 merino T-shirts (wear 1)
    - 1 merino LS button down shirt
    - 1 light fleece 1/4 zip
    - 4 pairs of merino socks (wear 1)
    - 5 pairs of merino underwear (wear 1)
    - 1 workout shorts and tech T-shirt
    - 1 bathing suit
    - packable jacket (Nomatic Outset clipped to backpack)
    - toiletries kit
    - electronics kit (Thule Subterra - for me and P2)
P2 is roughly the same, but with a pair of Toms
Easily fits in a 28L Aer Travel Pack Small backpack

3 shirts total - I used to pack a 4th, but rarely wore it
      1 pair of shoes total
4 pairs of Darn Tough socks total
      5 pairs underwear total
      2 bras total
sleepwear (microfiber t shirt and pants)
1 jacket (wear on the plane)
if the weather might still be cold I will pack a knit hat and a cotton turtleneck for layering.
I pack a small amount of toiletries, a Kindle, and most importantly - spare glasses.
We use laundromats as needed and wash socks and underwear in the sink. This is plenty of clothes. I still have lots of room in my 28L pack and it is light and easy to carry.

Quick question Allie, for your personal bag, does it fit the underseat requirements of the more restrictive European cheap airlines like RyanAir or Vueling? We have backpacks that are 16” in height, but I *think* the 40 centimeters equals like 15.77” or something like that. We also have 20” roller bags that will go above and I’ll, (ahem), put some cabin essentials I’ll use in my decent sized square but flat-ish Travelon purse under my sweatshirt for boarding.
