- The second episode of Adventure Time: Distant Lands has arrived on HBO Max, bringing with it all the cute lesbian vibes you could possibly ask for. If you’re as big a fan of Bubbeline as I am, Obsidian is definitely for you. As soon as their relationship was officially confirmed in the series finale, I’ve been dying for a Marcy & Bonnie spinoff. This ep does an amazing job of bringing closure to their story, and if you were a fan of the BMO prequel, you’ll be hella satisfied with this sequel. I love this it shows the flaws of both Marceline and PB while showing how much they’ve grown after the events of Adventure Time I love this!
I love how each of them have their own issues. PB has issues with pride and hubris while Marceline can be emotionally distant at times. But they never stop working on becoming better people and they have the motivation to be better for each other. I love Macy and Bonnie as individual characters (and I've loved watching their growth for 10 years) but I love them even more as a couple.

@@theworldminusraphtheninjat4378 it was a long time ago when What Was Missing first aired Frederator who animated the series had thier own youtube channel. They released a kind of recap/discussion video and the host theorized that maybe Marceline and Bubblegum were actually ex-girlfriends and not just former friends. The internet exploded, and because this was from an Official source of sorts even news picked it up and your 1million mom types demanded the show be removed. This was well before Korra and steven universe. So the crew officially denied there was any homoerotic subtext and the commentator for the video was fired, and I even think the channel ended up deleted.

I think I know why Larvo had it out for Glassboy. Seeing Glassboy's crack remined him how it felt to be small and vulnerable in his youth, and that made the big dragon angry! 🌋🐲

Regarding Marceline and PB’s breakup:
At the time we are shown in the special, clearly PB was trying to do the right thing, and Marceline was being overly dismissive and nonchalant.
However I think that we really have to look at what their relationship would have been like as a whole. Bonnie was getting more invested in the candy kingdom, and with that, though she may deny it, she enjoyed being the ruler and being beloved and controlling others.
She has an obsession with controlling everything around her, as well as a need to be loved: she first tried to fulfill this by creating a family, but eventually substituted it with the most distant, easily understandable love and worship that subjects feel toward their princess/goddess.
But she couldn’t control Marcy, and I think that realization meant she began to resent Marcy, and Marcy in turn began to resent Bonnie for trying to control her, and eventually for also withdrawing and becoming distant.
After all Marcy does say that PB was too busy for her, as well as saying PB never cared about her and was just her problem.
So ultimately,
All I’m saying is that while it seems easy to say Marceline was at fault for the breakup in Obsidian, it was actually a much more nuanced situation where both of them could be said to be at fault.

In regards to Jake, one of the show artists drew a comic that shows his body expanding and filling in the giant hole in Ooo after he died. My guess is that he passed away about 10 years after the AT series finale and Obsidian takes place 5 years after that. In the opening to "Come Away With Me," supposedly some of the buildings are made of Jake. And there's the giant ruined statues of Finn and Jermaine, so who knows what happened.
The drawing made by one of the artists wasn’t canon though.
Whatever happens, I’m holding faith in the writers that they give due justice to Jake and what he means to all of us.

The flashbacks between Marcy and her mom is tragic and sad since my granny who was like a mother to me passed in '09 it tore me up inside and this year i lost my pappy who both considered me as thier son, so i feel for Marcilene and her emotional trauma!
Holy fucking shit. I probably need to watch adventure time. This shit goes hard AF kinda like MLP did. Like it's a kid's show, but there's some fictional deeper meaning.
I really liked how, even though it was an adventure with a dragon and big emotions, the writers still made it feel very slice of life. PB and Marcy's domestic life felt natural and finding out more about Marcy's mom really added so much. Growing up in a dysfunctional family can really make it hard to have good relationships later in life, it was good to see that touched in here in a sensitive way.

glad I'm not the only one who was...unnerved by the radioactive dog scene, to say the least. lowkey broke me. also at the end of the bmo special, i thought jake was late teens early twenties, that's the vibe i got.
I understand that marceline and PB have a relationship or well ungoing one and the cartoon has been hinting that, but I just dont like it since it feels like a slap in the face since I've been shipping finn and PB for like 4 years.

Marceline shares something in common with PB. As cliche as it sounds. Having a partner that'd immortal may be a better compatible lover then someone she watched Grow up who would die at some point in her life.

Jake is dead but he didn’t die from natural causes In a comic made by the adventure time writers, Jake starts to suddenly grow and Finn and the gang can’t stop it and jake keeps growing bigger and bigger until he fills the gigantic hole caused by that big soul bomb (forgot what the bomb is called). So yeah Jake is dead but he died for a great reason
Well in that comic, Jake was shown to die of old age. And also, that comic was non-canonical. That was not showing his death, just experimenting something interesting about what could happen if he died. The purpose of that comic wasn't to show his death, but to experiment with what his dead body would do.

I think Simon might be the saddest character in all of fiction. It's nice to see that he's mostly well-adjusted now.
It's also so nice to see Marci and Pbubs together, and how even though there was some conflict between them in the present, they've grown emotionally and have a healthy relationship.
I really liked throughout the entire arc of the series that Bubblegum was called out for being a dictator, and punk-rock Marci is the perfect foil. She accepts that she's a control freak and relents, though doesn't undergo a complete transformation, and Marci softens up, but also still retains her Marciness. The lyrics of Monster demonstrate that perfectly.

I've been thinking about the name of the dragon as well. Molto Larvo is obviously playing off molten lava, but also molting, shedding skin, and larva. It hints at the metamorphosis of the dragon, which parallels Marci's metamorphosis.
I feel sad for Minerva[[Finn’s biological mother]] personally as think of what she went through… 😢 Martin left with Finn which likely was a major source of heartbreak then that disease later happened wiping out a lot of people… At least Simon is still alive after all he went through.. Minerva is an AI now..

Also, in Varmints when PB opened up about her responsibilities and fear for the candy kingdom, Marceline asked PB is that why she stopped talking to her.
The way Marceline was looking for attention from PB is not only from her insecurity to seek love and attention. It also had something to do with the resentment PB was giving her, as we know Marceline is afriad of abandonment and resentment. It's very likely that PB stopped talking to her before their break up, therefore not knowing what she did wrong Marceline tagged along, tried to do what made PB happy (to distract her from work as shown in flashback) to gain her love and attention again.

I really love shows that don't think LGBTQ+ relationships as unique and treat them like normal heterosexual relationships, that's what I want to see. It does NOT matter of you are gay or straight, love is love. I love that Adventure Time treated this like a normal relationship. No homophobia. No character in the show was against it.

I think marcline was wrong in the break up but I do have something to point out. She is older then PB and at this point PB has left the mother gum at that time was still trying to connect with others. Marciline has gone through that already and sees them well like glass. Yeah cool and pretty but will break eventually. So why care
marceline not seeing the glass people as people, just because theyre mutants... considering peebs is a mutant, that is a bit harsh. its no surprise pb was able to empathise more deeply with the glass people, even if her goal to rescue them was mixed in with her selfishness and pride.
I feel like the Jake death theory doesn't really have much evidence. The only evidence is that Finn has that tattoo and that Jake wasn't with Finn. On the tattoo, I feel like that was just a bro tattoo. Also, just because there are flowers doesn't mean it's some sort of memorial thing. Jake not being with Finn makes perfect sense; they are brothers. Yeah, they were always together in the series, but anybody who has a sibling knows that no matter how close you are to them, you will definitely drift apart. I mean, we literally see Finn living in a separate house than Jake in the season 11 comic. Jake is probably just spending some time with Lady, as we do see him alone with Lady in the finale montage. Overall, why do you want to believe he's dead? We will have to wait at least a year before Together Again, so why spend that time being sad that he's dead when it's not confirmed? It seems like everybody wanted him to die in the finale, but frankly, I just wanted him to be alive. So the theory is plausible, but right now there isn't solid evidence for it.

We know Simon summoned him and sent him to Marceline before he turned into the Ice King and he broke the wall of her makeshift house and stuck his axe on the snow and deadass walked through her other wall 💀
Obsidian confirms that when Betty wished to do whatever it takes to protect Simon prevents him from aging most likely. At the end of the episode we see Finn older and as a fellow human Simon would’ve aged but hasn’t.
My immediate thought is that Jake is gone or dead but strangely I was at peace.
I came to realize that’s because Jake lived a pretty fulfilling life and came so far as a character. To see his fully grown grandkid hop out the van and the love Finn shows with his chest tat is all the proof.
I guess my immediate thought was that if Jake surely DID pass, he did it happily and like a badass
Although the episode talks about people's flaws, some of the Glass People should later on get there cracks fixed using that magical lava pit that can can heal people's cracks so they don't get more cracks and fall apart like See-Thru Princess's 3 possible royal advisors at the end of the episode.
In "Varmints" PB apologizes to Marceline about pushing her away, but did Marceline ever apologize to PB about all the bad things she have said?
Idk, maybe I'm just forgetting that happened, but it still bothers me how she basically tell PB that all she was doing was wrong/dumb
I think that might be the reason pb felt so wounded at hearing the song again - they hadn't actually talked about this moment before. Marceline had demonstrated her support to PB, she'd obviously become more mature and affectionate, and PB had changed greatly to be a better person for everyone after her many season 6 wake-up calls, and she'd had Marcy support her the whole time.... but Marcy had never directly discussed this moment with her. That much is clear.
So revisiting the scene, and the SONG ITSELF, opened up old wounds that had never been properly bandaged. Pb felt inadequate and humiliated. Then when she responded by trying to prove herself, Marcy felt betrayed Pb didn't think her song would work. So Marcy was in a bad mood and ran off to "get inspiration" (er) and Pb had been ditched at a really important moment!
That's why, at the end of the ep, it is Marcie who owns up and apologizes to Pb for lashing out. It's not Pb's fault that Marcie has baggage - Marcie had been reacting disproportionately because she'd never expressed her feelings. In the past she couldn't tell Pb that she felt neglected, because she was too hurt by the idea of being abandoned. In the present, she couldn't tell Pb that the glass kingdom was a traumatizing location for her, because it was the place her mother left her.
When Marceline finds out that she WAS loved, that her mother never wanted to abandon her, she realizes that despite being a monster, she is still cared for. She sees Glassboy, someone who she knows is cared for, come up and reflect her cruel song with a version of his own.... she realizes she has to go back and make up for ditching Pb during a crisis. Then she tells her partner what was really on her mind.
There’s a reverse “emperor’s new clothes” plot point with the Glass ppl, and Glass boy was the innocent child who outs the emperor’s nakedness. This episode had me openly weeping, it was so deep. And I absolutely loved the full backstory of PB and Marcy’s relationship. *chef’s kiss*

It has the guy with the burger king crown, muscular BMO and TF the deer was. But it has a lot of cliche moments. Top 10 for sure, but for me R show, GF and OTGW was better. Still a great show thou!
Who lowkey thought Marceline was gonna return to the place she last saw her mom? I was ready to ball my eyes out...but the flashbacks already did that for me. Amazing episode! I grew up with Adventure Time, and to see it grow just as we all have made it all the more meaningful

I know it’s just a theory thrown out but there’s no way Jake is off with Martin of all people. First, Marin is a ding wad. Second, he doesn’t have a physical form since the Orgalorg episode. He took the purple comet up on the offer to “get a new mode” and blinked out of physical existence to be some formless consciousness.

Ok, so because I don’t have HBO Max I was pretty out of the loop with what this series even is. Just today did I watch Obsidian, but I haven’t watched BMO. As I understand it, this is a four episode season? Is this going to be the only season? Let me know if you know anything about this.
Anyway, in all, I really liked this episode. But I did get the feeling like it was rushed. We got A LOT of stuff out of Obsidian. New songs with deep meanings, huge flashback plot points, new characters, new settings, and overall just gigantic and highly important character development for both Marcy and Bonnie. I think everything was well done on all these grounds. Everything made sense and worked just fine for me. My only problem was that they did all this in one episode, even though it 45 minutes long. Like, in Adventure Time they would’ve spread this whole character arc at the very least between like 2 to 3 part episodes. At most between a whole season, with little break episodes to see what Finn and Jake are doing yada yada yada...but I guess since there’s only four episodes and they have to designate one episode to each major character or group of characters they want to get into, it makes sense that they condensed it. Regardless, I loved it.
This episode was obviously HUGE for insight into Marcys backstory, and the history of Bonnie and Marcys relationship. I’d always wanted to know more about Marcys mom and that whole part of her backstory. And btw, I both loved and hated that survival bunker Marcy spent time in. I gotta hand it off to the animators, Adventure Time has always impressed me with its ability to include the eerie remnants of the world it used to be. A world that looked a lot like ours. Adventure Time’s ability to interrupt the tone of the show as a funny kid show with mysterious references to a deeper and more sinister history is what made me fall in love with it. You’d be watching Finn and Jake playing around and then they’d pass by a giant sunken skeleton of some horned beast, or a dilapidated ruin of an old office building. And you’d start to ask yourself....”when exactly is this?” This effect of shining some light onto this world and it’s true nature, making you question it simply being a weird kid show with silly characters like a talking dog that can shapeshift, is something that Adventure Time has done beautifully since the first season. Which is why I loved the flashbacks to when things were more apocalyptic. But, I gotta say, something about Marcy sitting around this abandoned bunker with the skeletons of the previous residents sitting in their final positions, doing seemingly normal things I might add, was super creepy. She hung out in the solitude of an empty vessel of hope. By that I mean, she lived in this bunker which you could see was supposed to be a safe living place for what were probably some surviving humans, but is now just an empty shell of that bittersweet picture. All the furniture and dead people still sitting where they used to be, as Marceline talks with some boxes she drew faces on. The whole thing is really really creepy and I loved it.
Plus, THE VOICEMAIL!!!! My god this was a huge plot point for Marcys character. The fact that she lived in this bunker while tossing with the trauma of being left by her mother, all while staring at this mysterious blinking red light that drove her crazy, and that being a message from her mother giving her the support she needed, and her hearing it like 1000 years later and helping her overcome her issues of insecurity, IS INSANE!!! And one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen Adventure Time do. I’m glad that Marcy learned that it’s okay to be happy and heal, and it’s okay to express your feelings. And that art, music, doesn’t have to always come from a familiar place of pain or misery. It can come from good, love, happiness and healing. This episode also made me come to terms with the idea that sometimes material possessions aren’t important, and healing as a person is. Like with the fact that they broke Marcys bass. That was a big deal.
Like I said, they did all of this self-actualizing in one episode which felt rushed but I think they did a really good job nonetheless. Sorry this was a long comment, for those of you who read this far and enjoyed my thoughts as a long time Adventure Time fan, thank you. And let me know what you guys think.
Also, forgot to mention, I obviously really loved seeing Marcy and Bonnies relationship in this episode. Not only because of the representation of same-sex relationships, but because of getting to see these two characters and their dynamic in this scenario that we had waited for. It’s nice to see them do something that’s good for them, and recognize that.
Ok I also have to mention, seeing Simon! He’s always been one of my favorite characters and seeing him normal again is really sweet. He had very few scenes in this episode but it gave us so much. Seeing him needing to cope with no longer being Ice King makes sense. Though I’m sure being crazy and sorta trapped in his mind for so many years was rough, while also pushing away those he cared about, the crown was designed to offer a sort of temptation, so being in withdrawal from that makes sense. Also, I’m sure I’m not the only one who was shocked hearing “I Remember You” out of nowhere. Hearing that keyboard rhythm out of nowhere stopped me in my tracks and put my whole heart on pause. But, like they said in the video, hearing this song from Simon really did give the song new depth and feeling. “More of a lament and no longer a cry for help” very well said. Ok I’m done now I promise.
These are just 4, 40 minute specials so they're going to be condensed.
As far as I know, its JUST these and then its done. But who knows, maybe if its popular enough they'll make more. I doubt it though.

My heart just cracked, pun intended, when marcy and pb kissed, both in the final episode and now. I loved this cartoon when i was a child, and as time passed I grew distant to it. With time I discovered myself as a homosexual man, and you couldn't believe how much it helped me re-watching it and discovering that two of my favorite characters were in love.

Finn showed up to fight a Dragon without his Robot arm and only a Bath Towel. Would have love to see how this would play out. My guess Jake Granddaughter would have done all the work.

I loved this episode the tshirt origin story at the end with PB always being a Marcy fangirl was a nice touch. Marcy will always be my fave character PB WAS a bit of a crazy dictator at times borderline bad guy. I started watching this in my mid 20s as a way to take a break from studying you lgbtq+ kids who grew up with it are lucky though I did have Sailor Moon. I need to rewatch the whole series.

I disliked the pairing of PB and Marceline, not because of them being Lesbians, but because my boy Finn was in a somewhat way cucked. We see Finn swoom over PB troughout the entire series and the creators made sure to add in *a lot* of moments where there were some sparks, like when PB became younger again and it was her who then kissed Finn. But then, at the end, Finn was at the end without any love whilst PB went on to be together with one of Finn‘s best friends.
I mean, think about how messed up that is. The girl of your dreams, of whom you loved for a very long time, ends up dating and doing everything you wanted to do with her, with your best Friend and all you can do is just stand aside and cheer for them. That is awkwardness on a whole new level.

I truly love adventure time with finn and Jake. Just to come home and hear the theme song play made that horrible day I had go away. And the episodes were so deep and colorful. Now to see PB and Marci are finally together. As you mentioned it will really be sad if Jake died. But with adventure time writers, they'll always find a way to take the show to another level mentally. All the good shows are gone now off cartoon network. The cartoon shows that directly indirectly taught you how to cope with certain things.
