- 1998 documentary about the life of Louise Brooks, created by Hugh Munro Neely. Narrated by Shirley MacLaine and featuring numerous interviews with friends and relatives of the legendary star, it also contains excerpts from many of her films including her first on-screen appearance.

I was neighbors with Louise Brooks on Park Ave in Rochester NY. I never knew that the old lady nextdoor was silent film legend, "the," Louise Brooks, until she died and it was covered by the international press. She was on oxygen so I rarely saw her outdoors.
My mother was a lot like her. Stunning, difficult, talented, well-read, a deep ocean of secrets, and hid her horrendous insecurities behind a haughty attitude. In reality, she was frightened and unsure of every step she took and so, in the end, she was shunned and became a recluse. But, I decided that no one should die alone. Although she was impossible, I held her hand at the end. No wonder I find Ms. Brooks interesting. I suppose by hearing her story, I hope to unlock the mystery that was my mother.

Actually, difficult as this is to say...I was quite a bit like her. Everyone thought I was this sophisticated jet-setter, truthfully....I was extremely lacking in self-confidence, having gained quite a bit of weight after my two children (got married and had them very young, gave up my career for my much-older husband who turned out to be a real jerk). I decided to do something about it, entered part-time ballet classes, lost all the weight and then some, toned and felt good. But I truly was unsure of myself for a long time.....until I decided to return and finish my career education. I graduated top of my class, enjoyed a fantastic and rewarding, loving career as an ER/ Trauma RN for nearly 40 years.
I’m old now, but I remember wondering why people (especially men!) seemed afraid to approach me, never went outside without my hair and nails and make-up perfect. IT WAS HARD WORK, LEMME TELL YA!👍🏽😅. But I became happy with caring for the poor, the homeless in an inner city hospital......and only MY LORD AND MY GOD made this happen! Still happy and contented looking at “my Harvest”....my beautiful grandchildren who are striking out onto their own beautiful roads and lives.
I guess the moral of my story, anyway, is Life us so, so short.....don’t worry if you’re so glamorous and beautiful all the time! Allow people to see the beauty INSIDE of you! Follow Jesus, give your all to Him.....and LOVE ONE ANOTHER! God bless each of you here, in Jesus’s Precious Name, Amen!

I can so relate to trying to unlock the true stories of people that I've "lost."
In a world where silence is denigrated, over exposure reified and vacuous females call themselves “influencers,” I continue to embrace my privacy. I am not on any social networking sites like Farcebook which presents a reflection of a faux self via a carefully crafted “life,” as disingenuousness attempts to pass as authenticity. It fails spectacularly through self-promotion as an illusion for empty, aimless lives.
Her "mother" was absolutely disgusting for blaming this innocent child for having been molested.

The sad truth is, it's not an uncommon reaction. It's all too human to refuse to believe things that would upset your world. How much easier for many, to turn their heads and deny. I don't get it, but that may because I was blamed and I grew up knowing I would never do that to anyone.

Louise Brooks looked so modern and that was almost a hundred years ago. She is timeless. She will always be the face of free spirit.
She was, above all, a very courageous woman (without even realizing it) for daring to be herself in times when keeping the appearance was the unbreakable norm.

This is my second time watching this documentary. She was such an interesting person. I can see how she could drive a person nuts with her antics and thoughts, while at the same time being captivated by her vitality and beauty.
I love the 1920's I wish I lived during that time. Such a beautiful time. I love old movies and learning about all the actors and actresses

I had heard about William Paley paying her a stipend to keep her above water, but forgot about it. Thank you. That unresolved molestation when she was only 9 caused problems for her the rest of her life. Sad.
Particularly her mother's reaction to it. The mother sounded so admirable, too, up to that point - a suffragette type. That generation did brush things under the rug, but to blame Louise for seducing him!
I admire her for her independence but it cost her but she remains one of the most beautiful visions to grace the silver screen

Watching Louise Brooks in Pandora's Box on TCM led me here, and the journey was so worthwhile. This was a fascinating look at a remarkable woman.
She did have a beautiful voice.
It’s always saddened me how so many “beautiful people” have such tragic lives. Just because they have outward looks, doesn’t mean you don’t feel ugly in the inside, so heartbreaking
We need to look past peoples facades to their Heart
I think they are just living up to the standard. Society expects or at least claims that all beautiful people are ugly inside. It is the way they cope with not being beautiful on the outside; it makes them feel better about themselves to put better-looking people down. How many times have I heard that I have a "weakness" for good-looking men? Like how is that a weakness? What, I am strong when I am only attracted to ugly men because you know that all ugly men are beautiful inside? Because people assume that all good-looking men are assholes inside? Right. From experience, THAT theory failed to stand up to the test. Ugly men can be even nastier maybe because they are holding a grudge? Maybe from hearing that they are going to be lady killers, or man killers from an early age, physically attractive people subconsciously build that expectation into their personalities. Being constantly hounded and molested doesn't help. It builds hardness and thick skin to the extent that the ugliness physically attractive people experience from people on the outside starts to mirror itself from the inside. What is more, what is attractive physically to one person may not be to another. So how society builds such universal myths about physically attractive people is beyond me.
@@suzannfulbright5652 Look, this isn't rocket science. There's nothing new under this sun. Bottom line, it's the quality of that which lives under the skin that makes the difference in the humanity of being. Physical attractiveness is lovely, and loads of fun, to look at. But it's the interior life (if any) that holds, and earns, either respect or disdain. The body decays, but a heart, spirit and soul need not. The person who esteems greater a pretty exterior, over a beautiful interior, well, that reflects upon them, doesn't it? (Rhetorical question.)
Physical attractiveness and inner beauty certainly aren't mutually exclusive. But both qualities, in one person, remain uncommon. And where interior attractiveness is, of course, completely absent where toxic narcissism exists.
Captivating dancer/actress/writer. I appreciate this. In June, I was fortunate to have found her unassuming grave site at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, and left a flower. RIP, beautiful, one of a kind, Lulu. While I enjoyed 'The Chaperone' movie, it focused on Louise's chaperone. Someone should do a movie about Louise specifically.
How wonderful 💕 I did the same on the unmarked grave of an unknown murder victim in Oslo in 1994. Look it up. Oslo Plaza Murder. So sad. I found her grave last year after having looked for it a long time. Placed red roses. If I ever find Brooks grave in the US, I will for sure buy a big boquet for her.

Thanks a lot for sharing this documentary of the most beautiful woman and most expressive face ever on screen. Talented, brave, smart and specially enticing that made her really, really magnetic.
What a refreshing women, ahead of her time like an artist painting a future for a generation to timid to understand their futures. Their children bloomed with that understanding. For the people that loved her was their blessing and hers a proad spirit that knew how to live life.
The actress I feel the closest 💞 Thank you for this beautiful documentary. She was such a mistery, definetely so bright. She couldn't compromise. She understood the cinema better than anyone else. Still nowadays critics must to relate to what Louise Brooks said and wrote about cinema. So interesting this documentary is told by Shirley McLaine...
Thank-you so much for this. I'm a writer doing preliminary research for a project about Miss Brooks, and it has helped to glue a lot of loose ends together. And the tone of it is, in the words of Louise Brooks herself, "Simply marvelous."
A terrific profile of Louise Brooks in "Show People" by Kenneth Tynan. Weidenfield & Nicholson. 1979. "The Girl in the Black Helmet" Tynan interviewed her over several days and much of this piece is Brooks verbatim. One example gives the flavor "...born in the Bible Belt of Anglo Saxon farmers who prayed in the parlour and practiced incest in the barn." An amazing woman
There is also an entire chapter about LB in Kevin Brownlow's "The Parade's Gone By ..." (U of California Press, 1968).

Brilliant and beautiful. I was not as aware of her as I should have been - until now.
Even touching up her lipstick was inventive. She was such a powerhouse. To be that strong in a time where women were treated as decorative objects is astonishing.
I see that sentiment stated too seldom about her. I've watched a few of her movies now, and even when the role was one of a bauble or ingenue, she just dominated the room and the screen. Such a strong woman, even against all the currents of the time.
I first saw this fabulous documentary in 1998 and I have been in love with Miss Brooks ever since. When Louise is on the screen, it is impossible to take your eyes off her. Here's to you LuLu - you were like no other!

That kind of thing was typical. A kid told his mother about a family priest abusing him. She slapped him across the face and said don't say such a terrible thing.

I find so many similarities in my life, but she was a original in her approach, especially considering the times she lived in. She suffered for her insistence, but then what else is there in life? That beauty of hers, was her salvation, and curse, and she knew it. A wonderful person, has many battles, mostly with themselves. She knew her victories, no matter what she insisted on...thats how she did it.
never saw "pandora's box," in full, so i can't comment on it. but i have in my dvd collection "diary of a lost girl" and its outstanding. one of the great films of the 20s. it has drama, comedy, suspense and an excellent social message at the end. and louise brooks just lights up the screen.
"windy riley goes hollywood" is on that dvd too. and its a really funny little movie. (man that hearst really destroyed fatty arbuckle's life.) thanks for the video.

Having just finished her book I couldn't quite put my finger on it and have to agree with you. Maybe she was one of those people who just had to push people away and didn't know how to do it in a normal manner? I might be way off the mark, but she seemed to be a real loner who denied her chronic unhappiness. Being a loner is fine, but there is just that "something else" that is behind her...
I was thinking, how fortunate that she didn't have children.
Fascinating story. One wonders what she might have done differently to be happy/content, but still stay true to who she was? Kind of a paradox, I think.
Louise Brooks had a beauty and style that made her stand apart from the other actresses of the 1920s and 30s. So many actresses had a period look of the 20s. Ms. Brooks beauty, style, and personality lifted her above the others. I think were she were in her 20s in 2024 in Hollywood, she'd fit right in. I love the photos of her when she's not in front of the movie cameras, as she had a smile that was absolutely beauty, which made her glow. And even in the photos and films that exist of her in the 1950s and later, she still had a beauty that shone through. She had difficulties, particularly early in life, that affected the direction of her life after she left Kansas, but whether she thought her life successful or wasted, it was quite a life to have lived. I'm glad that there were people so interested in her later in life that helped the world rediscover Louise Brooks.

Louise Brooks was one of the most elegant, stylish and beautiful silent movie stars ever. She was an expert at making the camera work for her. Not just a fashionable icon of the “Flapper” roaring 20s era, she was so much more, and serious about becoming a respected actress. Pity that she and Hollywood were not on the same page after her return to the US and the new talkie movie industry from her sabbatical in European film.
Perhaps the greatest combination of BEAUTY, SEXUALITY, and INTELLIGENCE in one WOMAN the WORLD has ever known.

She ended up a bitter old lady in Rochester, New York. Her fame as well as Clara Bow's fame ended when Joan Crawford became an overnight sensation in the movie "Our Dancing Daughters" in 1928 when F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote

She was a sexy and smart women and she did pay for that. But louise was her own person and was behind all that sexy beuty a very innocent women with a tendancy to self destruction. she was at the end of her life something of a hidden icon and enjoyed some noteriety , but even then she hated attenshion and lived as a recluse with crippleing arthritis , only really conversing with peapole who she knew. in many ways she was luckyer than most . I read a biography on her by Barry Paris which was excellent. Also read Lulu in Hollywood written by the lady herself and I have four of her films in my library. Louise ruined her own career. She was irresponsible and difficult and did not want to play by the rules before she had achieved any degree of fame. Her downfall was her own doing.

I remember seeing "Pandora's Box" in theatre and she ruined me for all women. If one performance has to be captured of each actor "Pandora's Box" is Louise Brooks film.
