Without Tesla, no other car company would pursue electric cars. Now look at the all the majors rushing to make plug-ins and full electric. By the way, Tesla is making 5k Model 3 a week. That’s impressive coming from where they were just 2 years ago.

iali00: almost every thing you said is WRONG. Legacy OEMs have been developing EVs for over a decade ... the reason they are launching more EVs now and planning more in the near future is because the cost of key components (i.e. batteries) has finally come down to the point that makes EVs profitable, not because Tesla created the EV market. Heck, in the China or Europe, MANY more EVs are sold than in the USA, and very few of those are Teslas .. Teslas has no influence there, so your hypothesis is dead on arrival.
Lastly, NO Tesla is NOT making a sustained 5K Model 3's a week, they shipped over 5K only during the last week of last quarter, for the purpose of swaying stock holders ... since then, they have not hit 5K per week. The 5K target will not be meet until Tesla averages that production rate continuously .. still a long way to go .. that is why the stock is dropping ... Tesla missed their target.

    • @MattCasters
      @MattCasters 5 років тому +1

It is you that is wrong in the sense that no other car manufacturer is actually making batteries or EV components and it's doubtful they can make a profit on their non-Tesla EV cars. Since everyone wants batteries and there's a shortage on the market, they'll likely be paying through the nose. Tesla on the other hand does make batteries (and not just for their cars), motors and an actually stunning percentage of their cars.
Furthermore there are currently NO high speed chargers available for any of the competing cars where Tesla has a fast growing supercharger network. By the way, so called competitors Audi e-Tron and Jaguar i-Pace have both not even released, over 2000 days after the release of the Tesla Model S. Audi postponed release because their CEO in Germany got thrown in jail.
Your claim about not sustaining 5k/week is also totally besides the point the parent poster was making. Not only are you spreading a false rumor where others are calculating around 6k/week, you miss the obvious point that the car is outselling BMW, Audi and Mercedes in the same car category in the US at the moment, not just in the EV segment, competing against established ICE cars. This would be the case even at 4k/week.

    • @KrustyKlown
      @KrustyKlown 5 років тому +1

Matt Casters: Nope, you are still very wrong. Tesla does NOT make battery cells, and they buy the majority of their parts (how do we know that: only 45% of Model 3 is made in USA, while Chevy Volt is 60%, LOL).
Panasonic makes Tesla's batteries, Panasonic installed their mfg machines at Tesla's factory. Now Tesla is "stuck" with that one supplier, battery chemistry, and cylindrical cell format. Legacy OEMs all analyzed and agreed that battery cells should be a purchased commodity, in order to get the lowest price, guaranteed supply from multiple suppliers, and not be locked into a single chemistry / technology as battery tech is quickly advancing. Legacy OEMs all concluded that battery pack design and mfg would be a core business, NOT cell production. So, why did Tesla make the "wrong" decision? .. because they needed lots of cells yesterday, when there was not scaled up manufacturing for them, Tesla had to force this to happen, which they did, now that decision will come back to bite them down the road. The entire lithium cell mfg industry is growing like crazy, and there is more automotive cell production capacity outside of what Panasonic is producing for Tesla. So, NO the OEMs are not going to be paying through the nose. All published reports comparing Tesla and other OEM battery pack costs are fairly close on cost right now, close enough that Tesla does not have a significant cost advantage. So, you are wrong, legacy OEMs can build comparable cost packs and the supply of cells is not an issue.
As for EV component mfg, do you know that less than 1/2 of the Model 3 content is made in the USA? Contrary to the Tesla marketing hyperbole, they buy most of their parts from the SAME supplier base that the legacy OEMs purchase from. You really need to start learning the facts and ignoring the fanboy hyperbole.
Tesla Mod 3 outselling all other ICE cars in that segment is a bright point. However, government tax rebates are fueling much of that, especially in CA, where a large state tax rebate is available. Also, sales in that segment have been falling for years, everyone wants cross-overs not sedans.. but Tesla buyers have no choice, ya get a Model 3, because Tesla made the wrong decision, they should have built Model Y before Model 3.
Over the next 10yrs, battery pack costs are expected to drop in 1/2 for ALL car companies ... that point in time is the tipping point where EVs equal ICE cars in cost / function .. that point in time is what legacy OEMs are working toward with the latest system architectures ... where will Tesla be then? .. stuck with obsolete architectures & battery mfg equipment?? ... they will progress, but that will cost BILLIONS more ... this is the automotive industry, its tough .. Tesla has done well, beyond the expectations of most, but their battles are only beginning.

Accounting fraud? How widespread is it at brokerage firms?
... Say there are 3 agents in the stock market, A, B, and C. All A does is short sell the common stock of Tesla company. All B does is buy the common stock of Tesla company. And all C does is buy (from B) AND lend (to A) the common stock of Tesla. Then would not C and B eventually end up with a number of shares EXCEEDING the total number of shares outstanding, (equal to say X ; X being a finite number) of Tesla Company? And then how will the short sellers cover seeing that there are more shares owing than actually exist? N(C) + N(B) > X : What prevents this from happening? Can you say for certain that your broker has not lent somebody else the shares that are in your account?
In theory - should not happen, because when C lends a share to A, that is one less share in C's account UNTIL the short is covered, the share owing returned. BUT what if the broker has been lending out the shares in C's account without C's knowledge? So C continues receiving account statements claiming the shares he nought are in his account, but his broker may have secretly lent those shares out (sold them for a short seller). Are terrorist cells, white collar criminals, Bernie Madoff personality types, working on Wall Street?
If you think about it, shares should be numbered, engraven with serial numbers, accounted for - like cryptocurrency in a blockchain.
... The point being, does not short sellng create phantom shares which do not exist? For there appear to be no safeguards in place, and nor does the SEC investigate such issues. In other words many now think they are holding shares of Tesla common, when in fact they are not, but are merely receiving papers in the mail saying (falsely) that they have shares in their account.
... Consider the invention of tracking stock, which paper was as the paper money found in Parker Brothers' Monopoly board game. Or Bernie Madoff, who was eventually arrested but only after decades of claiming to buy and sell shares for his clients - all he was doing was issuing paper statements. The point being, the SEC, the politicians, police and journalists - by a large amount, do not care about such issues until their own livelihoods are personally threatened. They have no honour or sense of character - no zeal for righteousness, it would seem. Or am I being paranoid?

Even if you assume that Tesla will only sell pre-ordered Model 3s, you still end up with enough money to more than cover the total debt Tesla owes. I kind of get the short case in the short term, especially if you're short seller on TV freaking out retail investors with stories about Elon Musk's psychological meltdown, but in the long run, I can't really see all that many problems. The 35K Model 3 is going to come. They just had to produce lower volume, higher spec Model 3s to root out teething problems in preparation for mass production which, they seem to have done. Tesla has stated that the 35K Model 3 is starting production early next year and there's no reason to be sceptical. Though if it's Tesla time, production would probably start between 2Q-3Q 2019.

“Yes. We will definitely offer a $35,000 version of the Model 3. And probably at the end of this year is when we will be able to make a smaller version of the battery pack, and get into volume production of $35,000 version in Q1 next year. We would definitely honor that obligation, and we would do so right now if it were possible.”
      - Elon Musk at Q1 shareholder's meeting
"It's a mistake to position [removal of mention of 35K Model 3 on Tesla's website] as a change in Tesla's plan because it's not, we're just focusing on the options that are available now for our customers so that it's more clear. There's nothing else to it."
-A Tesla spokesperson on interview with Ars Technica on 13 July
Tesla wants to encourage potential buyers to look at and consider the current variants of the Model 3 on offer now. They want them to purchase Model 3s now. Not wait till next year. Cause supply is probably starting to outstrip demand and they need to stop anti-selling the Model 3 through mentioning that buyers can wait till next year for a cheaper variant which would obviously decrease Q3 and Q4 sales. And, if they don't increase sales this year, they'll have to raise capital again.
Also consider that if Tesla lies, their already weak-and wrongly so- reputation will be crushed. Oh, and the class action lawsuits are going to come rolling in. The Model 3 is the automobile equivalent of the B747. If a single part of the plan fails, "will the last person leaving Hawthorne please turn out the lights". Tesla just cannot afford not to sell the 35K Model 3. Even if they lose money on every single one.

Whoever is most charismatic usually wins in the short run because charismatic people are held to much lower objective performance standards by ignorant lay people. Musk has his main assets in Tesla stock. It might be worth a couple billions at the current stock price the problem is that he can not sell for the price as there would be a instant drop. Also Musk is financing his lifestyle with loans on stock, so he will be margin called when the stock price would drop which would further accelerate the decline. Chanos can sell anytime is hence richer. I know its difficult for little Musk fanboys to do basic thinking but who cares.

"I think each one of those statements is probably not true..."
Which immediately implies "Musk is lying"
But if he went to court he would say
    "I think" (my opinion)
    And
    "probably" (not definitive)
He then mentions another project which was notorious for being overcost and uses that as a cost guide, when it's already been explained that the Tesla system is cheaper and faster.
Couple this to the "fact" that Chandos is "probably" up to his neck in debt as far as investment in Tesla is concerned, he wants (NEEDS) them to fail and I know who I believe!

The problem with the mentality of "the results will out" is that shorts in large number and sufficient connection have the power to skew those results. Case in point, Tesla has demonstrated an ability to produce a desirable affordable electric vehicle at a gross margin akin to a luxury vehicle with sufficient volume to meet new demand and sufficient economies of scale to net positive cash flow per car. This is all public record included on a quarterly report filed with the SEC and nobody has accused them or found any evidence of fraud in any way. Their stock should, in a market that was driven by the value proposition of a position, go up on that news. Instead, a single analyst downgrades the stock, for reasons that are questionable at best and a violation of his fiduciary responsibility at worst, and the price falls 4%. This screams of direct manipulation, especially on a stock whose short position is equal to half of its cumulative revenue.

That last statement by Mr. Chanos, I see as positive for Tesla and Musk's leadership. They are overcoming hurdles daily and much of the improvement is in software, according to Musk. Annualized losses are $US 4B for Tesla right now, but if demand remains strong, that trend could. change soon.

In theory - no, because when C lends a share to A, that is one less share in C's account UNTIL the short is covered, the share owing returned. BUT what if the broker has been lending out the shares in C's account without C's knowledge? Are terrorist cells, white collar criminals, Bernie Madoff personality types, working on Wall Street?
N(C) + N(B) > X : What prevents this from happening? Can you say for certain that your broker has not lent somebody else the shares that are in your account?
The point being, does not short sellng create phantom shares which do not exist? For there appear to be no safeguards in place, and nor does the SEC investigate such issues. In other words many now think they are holding shares of Tesla common, when in fact they are not, but are merely receiving papers in the mail saying (falsely) that they have shares in their account.
