Just wanted to pop in and say thank you for making this video. I’ve been watching for a while, and I’ve always loved your videos and personality, but man, this video hit home for me. My family is from Guangzhou, and I absolutely love it there and the food. Seeing this video really brought back so many memories for me. Thank you and hope you enjoy your time in Guangzhou!

If one can cook, China truly is vegetarian's paradise with its myriads of ingredients. Also, if one knows, there are many good vegetarian restaurants as well.

I'm so interested to see you ask so many questions (about oyster sauce, lard...) even as a vegetarian. It wasn't until I went vegan that these things even came to mind. As a vegetarian (and I feel like a lot of the western vegetarians I talk to) it was kinda like "if it looks veggie it's cool" and I didn't even consider those secondary animal ingredients.

Ahhhh I feel you! I didn't care about these things when I first became vegetarian either, but once you know it, you can't unknow it, and I wanted to do my best. It does make almost everything inedible tho😂

Loved this video, thank you for sharing! I am pescatarian (but mostly veg) and honestly most days I feel uninspired and not excited about food and cooking. So this was really nice to see, how you were able to make a scrumptious meal with just one pot basically.

    • @tapiocapress

Haha thank you so much - yes I have literally just one pot in Guangzhou, and having limited equipments really demotivates me from cooking...it was fun to eventually "trick" myself into doing it tho:)

honestly amazed by your persistence in vegetarianism! i used to be a pescetarian, but when I went back to China or even eat Chinese food in America, those plans would go out the window! especially because a lot of my family members don't understand why i would want to not eat meat :')) but love these videos, and hopefully china can start being more vegetarian friendly :) there's always the sweet foods!

Same!!! My parents are still thinking being vegetarian is just a phase and one day I would start eating meat again….but there’s always a way to make it work despite all the challenges:)

It’s a pot attached with an electric burner! I got it for testing ice cream recipes - didn’t end up making an ice cream recipe😂

Hi! Loved your video... I totally related to your struggles as a fellow vegetarian (who doesn't even eat egg). Unfortunately, different cultures have different interpretations of what is vegetarian which becomes a big challenge ( like in the case of lard, even after you took so many precautions).
Try to search if there is any Indian restaurant in your area. You will never have such a problem eating a 'vegetarian' meal at an Indian restaurant. And there should be a plenty of vegetarian options there for sure.

Hi Evelyn :) curious to know what happened to your apartment in Beijing? and what are the reasons you chose to have a vegetarian diet?

We subleased it to a friend! I became vegetarian because lots of my college friends were vegetarian, one day I thought eating meat seems a bit unnecessary so I wanted to try not eating meat and see what happens - never had it since!

Not all cities around the world is vegetarian friendly. Take for instance my city in Borneo, there aren't many vegetarian options just a few years ago. Now there are more options but like you said these foods are not 100% vegetarian as they still use non vegetarian oil.
It's a matter of prefference sometimes, not all vegetarians adhere to very strict diets, some claim they can eat fish and eggs etc, others shun even eggs.
It depends on your own prefferences I suppose. Oyster sauce though has a vegetarian one, but more expensive to buy, therefore restaurants and coffee shops don't use them.
I guess the other option in condiments is to use substitute flavoured ones. But be warned that we don't know what fake ingredients they put in there to make the taste and smell equivalent to the real thing.

I use a Taiwanese vegan oyster sauce at home! And yes - that's why I like cooking at home and knowing all my ingredients, because that way I wouldn't have to deal with people having different understandings of what being vegetarian means

You are good at editing, and i enjoyed your vlog! Seems like I will have to cook on my own when I visit China😀!
egg is also part of non vegetarian food, are those some different kind of eggs you are using like almond milk is also called a type of milk?

I think people’s definition of vegetarian might be a bit different - I do eat eggs, but there are also egg substitutes available in China if you don’t eat them. I’ve tried Just Egg:)

Yes, you are right! When you live in Guangzhou and don't cook for yourself...., you definitely miss out on a lot of foods that you don't know exist :D I was very surprised to find my favorite and tastiest mango fruits there that were as big as my forearm! And they tasted sooo delicious!!! Yummy!!! i will never forget the great taste ;D You should collect the recipes and publish your own cookbook :D
