Problem with painters are all the paint fumes eventually mess up their heads!

I'm investing in paint equipment and learning to do it myself. Although I have a painter that does a great job he can't handle the volume and is not fast enough. So if you want something done right learn to do it yourself and that's exactly what I'm going to do.

Have you purchased a spray gun yet? If not I have a recommendation. I own a devilbiss gti pro lite, Cost around 450. Great gun, but I just purchased the devilbiss flg5. A lot more reasonable in price and absolutely fantastic! A tiny bit heavier to handle, but lays down material equal to my gti pro.

@@woodsandbarclay I ordered mine from the UK. 'SPRAY GUNS DIRECT" Even with shipping it was around $240. I got the 1.8 tip and needle for primer and the 1.4 tip and needle for topcoat. As far as general tips etc. Take a look at " paint society" and the "gunman" both on UA-cam and both excellent for tips and know how. Good luck. I'll also try to dig up an article in regards to single stage vs two stage paint systems. Very interesting read.

I went through a similar experience 26 years ago for a 1969 Mustang. Painter came highly recommended, many mutual friends, and the car sat for a year with very little work done. Found another guy and the car was finished in three months, very professional job. He showed progress every week. Painters are hit or miss. I’ve dealt with professional shops and fleet cars and they’ve even been loopy at times.

I learned a long time ago to find the best, most expensive shop in town. Mercifully I always had to use a shop because someone rear-ended my car! The 350SE was repaired/repainted by the Dallas authorized Porsche and Ferrari shop (Stuart’s Paint and Body Shop in Dallas). They were just the opposite of your New Jorker: lots of communication and seemed enjoy a nice vintage Mercedes along all the Ferraris. They were also happy to have me drop in.

I highly recommend Body Craft USA in Fort Lauderdale for superb painting service. The business has been around for 30 years which speaks for itself. I just picked up my 1992 500 E today and a cosmetic repair on my driver's side door was done so flawlessly (blended into other panels perfectly). My car was in the shop for 4 days. The shop is very clean with high end and specialty cars being worked on. The owner, Alan, is very courteous as well as his office manager Melissa.

It best to buy a car that doesn't need body work or paint work. Pay a little more and avoid the BS.

My painter is here in Austin. His shop does tons of insurance work, but he’s also someone I trust. I have had him fix a couple of my modern BMW’s. I have seen the restoration work, too. He’s good. I also have had a classic Mercedes before. The factory paint was on mine, a 64 220se. It lasted until the car was destroyed by a drunk driver. It would have been very hard to equal. I don’t know. I’m really picky. Would be hard to imagine me being 100% pleased by any painter.

Perfect example of why I'm painting my own car. I've been in the restoration game for 37 years. ( Furniture) not cars but always be EXTREMELY suspicious of someone asking for a large down payment. I only ever take money up front for materials and tell the customer they pay when the job is done and they're happy. I've seen this situation many times before, customers paying someone up front as much as 50% down and thinking its an incentive. The complete opposite is true. Some guys just need that 🥕 because they are always, always behind. Sorry this happened Pierre.

Well my father had a good rule. If your going to buy an old car that you want to look great, pay for the rust free original paint, or rust free with good repaint car, or learn body work and paint. I never learned how to paint, but I learned to pay for rustfree cars. The other rule, find a master mechanic, pay his rate, if he's the best it will reveal itself and he is worth the money, build a relationship with him, tip him at Christmas, and let him take care of the car. This has worked well for me.

I’ve painted 100 cars. It’s not rocket science. It’s like digging a hole. It takes a lot of shovels full to make a hole big. It takes a lot of time to do a very nice paint job. I can do a perfect job. but not in one squirt. If I want perfection, I do one panel at a time. This is a good way to learn, Pierre. Transmute your frustration and give it a try. It’s intensely rewarding. Or, Have you considered vinyl wraps?. Three grand will get you a world-class job. My nephew wrapped a porcelain toilet with gold leaf foil For an Arabian. Friggin’ amazing! Wrapping a car is easy in comparison. And low-risk. You want the bodywork done right either way, if you get tired of it, you can squirt it, or wrap it again. I was a skeptic. The technology of this vinyl, especially Avery brand, and 3M for some certain styles, is amazing and getting better almost by the month. Las Vegas Car Wraps LLC. Vinyl is the future, paint is dead.

I learned to paint at a restoration shop in NC. Old farm body shop but well known for doing it right. When I stopped drinking and restore classic European cars I also found out about painters. Bought my own booth and do it myself. Unfortunately I don't do commission work because my work is for therapy.

It’s funny you mentioned hyper active and unable to focus. I have a w210 wagon in midnight Blau.
Great car, but it suffered sun damage on the hood (typical Florida stuff).Took it up north as i used to do with it 2 or 3 times every year.
A random Painter at a Starbucks saw it one day, gave me a price and I took it to his shop. Well , 2 weeks in, and I was about ready to head back south and it was in his shop roughly sanded and sitting. Did some bondo work on the hood, hit the roof and hood with primer, reduced the paint, then sprayed/sanded and repeat. Went back the next afternoon and then cleared it etc. Guy never worked and was always running around, but would leave his shop open.
Basically the guy wouldn’t go beyond sanding, so I just went in over night and did it my self. No experience, just a UA-cam education and managed to do a mediocre paint job. 2 years now, and still have never heard from the guy, just glad he grabbed the paint and had it at his shop!
Sometimes if you need something done, you just need to jump into it sadly

If you want a great paint job then you have to make friends with those guys that customize cars and build hot rods...preferably somebody that has their own shop. They usually paint their own cars and don't deal with insurance jobs. Best paint jobs I've ever seen and gotten were from hot rod shops...expensive. but worth every penny

Pierre, would not be a crazy idea to reach Steve Dulcich from Motor Trend. The guy Loves to paint vehicles. I am sure he would do a quality job if he is asked for.
Could lead to possible a great collaboration. Who knows.
Personally, I have given up on leaving quality jobs to someone else. I'll teach & educate myself. To better do it myself. If do mistakes and I will, at least it was my mistake.
It is sad that even when willing to pay a premium for quality labor, people can not be trusted.
As a side note to everyone: Never go to insurance related paint shops, those shops only rush jobs to get to the next one.

I had a very similar experience with a Jag restorer in R.I. many years ago. I would never do a long distance paint job again, and
would never advance too large a percentage on any job that isn’t parts and labour measurable. It was a virtual nightmare, that turned what should have been a positive experience into a very bad one. You need to be close to the painter and pay on site as progress is mutually verified in person. It is a dying art unfortunately, and you make another very important point: unless the painter has a lot of experience with your particular brand, you must either do the parts strip yourself, or have a qualified mechanic do it. Another headache, lol.

CRAZY!!! At 10,000 out of pocket i'd camp outside his house and post my daily shit through his letterbox. In all seriousness I would have thought out in Florida and hot places where sun damages paint id think there would be a hundred painters to choose from! This is an awful story, i had similar experience trying to get chrome shipped from Portugal , hundreds of pounds though not thousands, down the toilet.

You don't like painters ? Painters are a special breed , nothing like paint fumes first thing in the morning .If you have a special car do not take it to a run of the mill body shop. Restoration work should be done by a restoration shop . Not by a body shop .A guy named Chris Smith who owned The Creative Work shop in Dania Beach Fl , gave me some advice 36 years ago you can not do service work or dings and dents and restorations all in the same shop .Restoration type work can only be done in a restoration shop . Because all of the small jobs like a brake job ,fixing a small dent ,a quick water pump will get in the way of restoration work and there fore the restorations will never get done.
