    I have an identical looking set of walkie-talkies called Coleco CB-40. They are slightly different in that they also transmit on 27 MHz. I remember wanting one badly when I was a kid, mostly to use to listen to the local CBers. I purchased them a couple years ago for nostalgia reasons. I did get lucky, and they both work, but have a lot of background noise, and work about 100 meters, tops. Thanks for the video.

    They look very cool. Thanks for sharing. It’s good that it doesn’t work as it gives you some fun fixing them. I see like me you enjoy the 3D design Stay safe regards Chris

      Cheers as you well know yourself the fun part is in the fixing them, my basic principle is do as little as you can get away with, make it look good and work as it did back in the day and if you have time make it better :-) I mean I could spend a grand on a sig gen and a decent freq counter but is it really worth it for a 10mw walkie talkie ha ha. I do the hard bit, the 3D stuff, the swapping components, the tuning bit should only take a few mins really and can be done any time very quickly too. cheers for watching.

    I can see Tyler getting his M7 call-sign soon? Great videos and reminds me of my childhood when my parents bought us a pair of 27 MHz walkie talkies.73.G7HFS/PA3IKH

      yes great fun, so many of use started out on these super low range sets, if you could shout the same distance when the battery ran out that was about right.

      Cheers, yes they were quite a smart looking radio for way back then when everything tended to be a little wooden looking.

    I had a set for Christmas 1978. Worked great. Picked up lots of local chatter.

    I had these as a kid possibly in the early 80s. Think they were bought for me at an outdoor market.

      Ha ha no not really I set a tight limit on them, I wont pay much over 20 quid for anything these days, particularly the toy ones.

    Fantastic repair. I didn't know there was a difference with Japanese screws.
    It's great that your son is into it. See how quickly you can get him licensed? 🙂

      Yes battery covers look amazing, yes Japanese screws and unf threads very often make finding particularly the antenna fixing screws a pain, I'll have to get some in stock.

    Nice repair. Me thinking the look and time of the things they had in the program you mention before. Quality Los Angeles based thing. Red Hand Gang 😀

    I've modified quite a few of the cheaper walkie talkies mainly for the 50MHz 6m ham radio band. You would be surprised what a little preamp in front of the receiver and a small power amp after the transmitter can do. They are very basic and the above mods really do work very well. Most of these simple radio's followed a standard circuit which is very basic, especially on receive. When you mention manually tuning the 'AM' side, does the manual tuning tune 27MHz or 49MHz?

    49 MHz with its low background noise could really carry.

    I have a pair similar to these by radio shack from the mid to late 80's.
    49.830mhz fm tx/rx.
    I think they are about 10 milliwatts output power.
    Seems to be a good rx side and I remember getting a 1/2 mile range in the forest and more in a open area. If they had say 100 mw of power they would be decent radios. Regardless still fun to tinker with.

    • @knoxieman
      @knoxieman  3 роки тому

      Yes they aren't very powerful however it is the receiver on all these old sets that's the weak part sadly.

    After watching this video I had a bit of a Google and found three pairs on eBay. I put a bid on one pair listed as complete and working and won them for only £13 plus £3 p+p I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do with these.

    something odd here,they are named 49 mhz but your communicating on the real cb frequencies like on your roadking..if the walkie talkies are from over here in N.A. then they are 27 mhz units...the two settings for cb is odd too.was there a fixed ch on one side and variable rec on the other..fancy..but i had 1960s superregen units that u can hear all freqs at once and the strongest guy came in..the superregens could be slightly adj for parts of the band.

    • @knoxieman
      @knoxieman  3 роки тому

      Hi, the radio has two modes, in one mode it has 49Mhz single channel transmit and receive and the other mode its AM CB receive only, it has no front end filtering though so any nearby AM CB on any channel would come through 😄
