He probably couldn't get wooden furniture as plastic is more common. Also, bluing is a really toxic process and cerakote is better because it doesn't rust and it will last for about 10 years
With the pitting on the steel the bluing would have looked weird (the pitting shows up a bit more in my experience). With cerekote it fills in the pits slightly but also makes them less noticeable.
Cerekote is a better harder finish. And as far as using poly furniture. Wood warps snd doesn't dissipate heat well. The poly furniture likely had a heat shield in it.
I like how you soaked the parts in vodka, at one point, to make that AK "feel at home" during what is obviously a traumatic process... Although, you should replace the pickle juice with borscht, maybe? *smirk😏 (Great job, btw!)
To all those chiming in. I work on AKs, as well as restore furniture and items I find in thrift stores, it's why these videos intrigue me. IMO, it was not necessary to remove the barrel (unless it was pitted and needed replacing, which the video didn't say). As he said you need a press to remove and install but it was commendable all the same. A 10-ton press is really best to do this but the average person does not have access to one in their garage. Also, the trigger guard was iffy as to necessity but again commendable and nice to see it done, his videos are top-notch. It's possible that it could continue to rust between the guard and receiver but unlikely with minimal care, these are AK's after all. Also, possible that the rivets were loose, and if that's the case then that would be a good reason for replacement. Thanks again for the video, your work is always great and I love watching them! Please do more like this!
This brings back quite a few memories of my time in the South African Police ISU (Internal Stability Unit) back in the early 90`s...we used to patrol the South African/Mozambique border to catch gun runners bringing in hardware for the war in the townships between Mandela`s ANC and The IFP, we used to catch the guys digging up AK`s that they buried and returned to collect...they were always rusted to hell and back but even in that condition they still functioned after a quick clean using diesel...scary stuff, hundreds of lives were, and continue to be lost in South Africa thanks to those "Imports" by the now ruling party...

Like.

Epic! A pleasure to watch this gifted young man reviving stuff. Thank you for sharing your videos with us.
In 12 years of gunsmithing within my own shop, I've never worked on an AK-47 or a variant of one. I've fired them, but never repaired/upgraded one. You did an admirable job on this piece, very nice work indeed. Thank you for your great videos. God bless. Rev. D.
While I simultaneously wish that you uploaded more frequently, I also understand that this takes a lot of work to both restore and to edit. Great as always, I’ve watched it to sleep to every night since the release.
I truly love watching this meticulous process.

incredible amount of work done, looks amazing. But in my opinion it would be better if you ordered a regular, original stock, wooden, which was on AKM, or plastic, which then appeared on the AK74M. Greetings from Russia ;)
Ngl, was a little disappointed he didn’t go with wood. Even rotted to pieces, that lower hand guard was beautiful

Hell. Yes! I've said it before I'll say it again - this is what I subbed for!!
Also, it's an AKM, some say it's romanian in the comments.
Edit: It's actually an Izhmash AK, which is genuine Soviet, good one.
Easily mistakable though especially cause if it’s condition. The Romanian marking is the top half of an arrow inside a triangle while Izhmash is a full arrow in a triangle
This is not izhmash ak
And then he went and put plastic furniture on it 🤮
@@WalnutZen and a Romanian wire folder 🤢
You have no idea how much it hurt my soul to watch you paint that gun. 😫😫😫
This is probably the best restoration I’ve ever seen. Beautiful work.
Tha fact that this Ak was made exactly 50 yrs ago shows how genuine the AK is.
Love the videos, and I enjoyed this build. I was just sorry to see plastic parts added where there was once wood.
Polymer is going to be the future. Polymer also withstands many many environments much better
@@SouthValleyKnifeCo I don’t disagree the polymer is a good product and would last longer…. But this is a relic from the past; Not a firearm of the future. I think it would be much lovelier and authentic if he stuck to wood. 🤷🏻♂️
@@chrisvarns8584 that particular furniture is cannon for them. So I would argue its just as at home on that gun as it is on another one

Amazing work. Thanks for sharing. I like the wood better but to each his own.

AKM I believe. Very cool restoration
Amazing work! I would have preferred to see some beautiful wood furniture, but that’s my personal preference.
This is a really nice gun!
That is why you should have blued it instead of paint it and put on new wood furniture instead of the plastic stuff.
Soviet AKMs were never blued. They were phosphated and then painted black
@@SouthValleyKnifeCo I was more thinking about the estethics.
Soaking the parts in vodka was definitely an important step for a Russian military rifle.
Kkkkkkk
I like how you soaked the parts in vodka, at one point, to make that AK "feel at home" during what is obviously a traumatic process... Although, you should replace the pickle juice with borscht, maybe?
*smirk😏
(Great job, btw!)
Great restoration, I'm not sure some of that disassembly was necessary but bravo for going to that length for the video.
Go lay down
It is necessary
Arm chair quarterback
Restoration means completed as if new....
What a beautiful rifle I loved using these though I will say I used the 74 in service I still like the akm
Ficou lindo! Parabéns pelo excelente trabalho!

I appreciate this. One of the best rifles ever made in the world.
When you put those smaller pieces of the Ak parts in that small jar, I thought you’ll put in some type of chemicals that’ll clean it but you pull out a jar of pickles and pour in the pickle juice inside the small jar where the Ark parts are at, you really caught me off guard there not gonna lie also thank you rescuing and repairing a old gun, you got yourself a subscriber.
The liquid from pickles is acidic as all hell, my dude. It would have been just like putting the parts in vinegar - will strip of rust and grime no problem. Symbolically adds a bit of national flavour, too.

Like.
