I wouldn't say this version of Gently is better than the Iowa version or vice versa. Both versions of the song are unique and beautifully malevolent in their own way.
This one is more dark and sad, Iowa's one seems more angry. I think they're both brilliant, but the whole of MFKR seems like the lead singer is caving in under the weight of his own despair, while IOWA does the opposite, having the lead snap and project all of his anger onto an uncaring world.
Nah, Iowa's was better, had a better sense of grandiosity, which I think fits the lyrics of the song better. But it is all just opinion, despite what a lot of the hipsters on here will say.
Wow.. almost two decades after this was one of my favorite songs to play on guitar, I come to youtube and find that many people out there are still discovering it today. Back then Donnie Steele was giving me guitar lessons. The guy is the most humble man you'll ever meet. When I started taking lessons he never mentioned a thing about having been in Slipknot. I didn't know he was in it until one day I read the credits section of a website dedicated to the MFKR album. I remember asking him about it ("Were you in Slipknot?") and I'll never forget how much it was not a big deal to him -- he basically said, "Yes. Did you practice your scales?" I begged him for weeks to teach me this song. I always told him how great it was, and he would counter with, "if you think THAT'S great, check out this Black Sabbath/Pantera/Megadeth song I brought to teach you." He genuinely regarded this song as no big deal, though I always thought of it (and still do think of it) as a masterpiece. He eventually did teach it to me and I have his handwritten guitar tabs somewhere. But he never acted like it was a big deal that he wrote it, and was more interested in his current music with Killpact, etc. All of the people here saying they hear "Metallica", you are correct. They were a big influence on Donnie's music. He was/is a traditional "metal" guitarist, through and through. Years ago, long after I stopped taking lessons and moved away, I needed a musician for my wedding and looked up Donnie on Google.. only to find that he had stepped in to play bass for Slipknot. I figured he probably didn't have time for something like wedding duty. Lol. However I can guarantee you if I would have contacted him, he would have done it with pleasure -- one of the best guys you'll ever meet. Loved Mountain Dew, his Jeep Cherokee, and his family. If I forgot to give him his $10 for the week, no big deal -- "hit me next week" he would always say. Donnie could make any guitar sound beautiful but I'd bet if you asked him for a suggestion, he'd tell you to pick up an Ibanez. If I saw Donnie today somewhere, I can promise you the first thing he'd ask me is, "have you been practicing your scales?" Donnie if you are out there buddy I just want to say I'm proud of you and hope all is well. You used to tell me I played guitar like Marty Friedman which is hilarious because I'd consider myself more of a Robert Wilson.
growls. And no. There is a reason Slipknot is successful now and struggled back then. Corey and Jim Root saved the band. Anders was good but it sounded a lot like a Pantera cover band ( Maybe that is why some people love Anders his vocals more). But Corey gave Slipknot a new sound that no one heard at that time. Say what you want about Corey Taylor but he brought energy to the band. Again not saying Anders sucks (In fact I would trade most of the emo core bullshit for someone with his talent). He just didn't do anything big with the band. Tbh they wouldn't even be making music if it weren't for the right moves they made by getting a new vocalist.
Crazy enough, none of the guys who recorded this album are still in Slipknot, except Clown. The fact that Joey is on the cover definitely cements this as a relic demo. Never forgotten, MFKR.
kapoios. gr I don't know why Anders didn't just do background vocals like Chris and clown. if one of them retires, which will be sad if it happens, they should pick him. him and Corey together would be sweet. Corey doing lead, and Anders background. one can dream.
As a long time Slipknot fan, I think this version of Gently is much better than the Iowa version. This entire album takes you back to a different time, even today. The contrast is incredible and you can tell the sound is original, you can tell its this sweet riff one of them made up and they all jammed to and made an epic song out of.
+TrashMetal26 MFKR as a whole is something to be, through listening, examined at the very least, and marvelled at best. It takes elements of genres and fuses them in a way I don't think I've heard any band do. That's not to say they aren't out there, but I've not come across them.

We can sit here and argue which version is better until the cows come home, what we really should appreciate is that we have both versions. I would have loved to hear Corey’s vocals on this instrumental, that would straight up be godly.
The atmosphere of this song is incredible. Its out of this world. It really puts you in a relaxing mode of pleasure before it drags you outta that state of comfort with the harder hitting parts of the track. The Iowa version might be more cerebral visceral, but its got nothing on the MFKR version for how well it sells its concept, especially with Anders on vocals and Donnie Steele's guitar work.
Hehe, mode of pleasure.. Iowa had that bone-chilling tone and pitch changes that made it sorta.. Float along. This was more of a raw and straightforward vocal approach but still had perfect tones
Nah I think its just a different sound. The guitar tone for everything Slipknot has done sounds great. This is a more beefy sound compared to the others which have more of a skronky sound. All the albums sound different but you can still tell that its Slipknot. Thats what is a big part that makes them amazing.
The guitar tone on this is pretty fucking sweet, and I like how the drums are more in the background. The production as a whole really is perfectly matched to the band's sound.
I still like Coreys version better. Just the raw emotion of his screams is incredible. He conveys so many emotions without even using any words. That said, this is pretty great too.
if they cleaned up the guitar about 50% between MFKR and IOWA as well as the vocals and kept the acoustic in the beginning, it would have probably made a larger impact in slipknots history

Growing up with my friend we would have these debates about which version was better. He liked this one and i liked the original. Classic bass vs guitar debate. I started playing the bass he started playing the guitar. All because of these 2 great versions.
