Some of you have said that the level where this ended was uniquely annoying compared to the rest of the game. I'm kinda inclined to believe that since I didn't have nearly as much issue passing the earlier levels, and the gameplay itself is pretty fun, so I kinda want to give this another shot at some point. Mainly because I want to see at least a little bit more of the story.

no spoilers, just a thing you mightve missed in the pause menu: theres a list of extra controls in the pause menu, one of them being that double tapping grab switches the objects in your hand (just incase you play again some other time, even if maybe not for a video)

Good! Good! That amazing to hear, and listen, if you need help with figuring something out, don't hesitate to ask for it on the discord. Many of use learned how to play through the game by learning through the advice of others. The game purposefully doesn't tell you anything, so all ways of learning are valid!

PLEASE do turn this into a series. there's also the Downpour DLC which has at least DOUBLE the content of the base game.
each slugcat also has its own story (though Monk is just easy mode survivor). Hunter is difficult unless you're good at speedrunning, because your time is limited.

1:05:09 You almost hit the nail on the head with this one. Its not that the game is purposefully difficult to emulate old school games, its purposefully difficult to show how you are just a part of the world. You are not the main character, just an inhabitant in an ecosystem.

Your criticism lines up well with what the game initially received, back at 1.0, in which, in addition to setting your meter back one point, death would send you back to the *previous* hibernation location.
Afterwards, in addition to removing part of the aforementioned mechanic, a certain item was made (more) available: The "wheel" flower.
Consuming it prevents the loss of meter on death and leaves the flower at the last place you died, much like the stain in Dark Souls games, making the game considerably more forgiving.

One of my favourite things about rainworld but also the reason so many people disliked it when it first came out is that it doesn't explain anything about where you're supposed to be going or how anything in the game works, i think it works really well in making the game mysterious and atmospheric while giving the player the agency to explore and discover the world by themselves, but i completely understand why its frustrating for a lot of people, especially if they want to see the story

    • @Dubmentia
      @Dubmentia Місяць тому +4

I agree. But I thought it actually did do a good job at teaching you everything, it just doesn't ever tell you anything explicitly except at the very very beginning. But if you're one of those people who enjoy figuring things out yourself no matter how frustrating it gets, you'll love this game forsure.
Like for me personally it went like:
      -Learn to move around
-Learn to find food and eat
      -Learn to survive the rain
-Proceed to die a hundred times
      -Learn to navigate
Then it just went to I have no clue where I am or what the hell is going on. I'm just gonna go where I can and see what I can see. Then I found a door with a symbol on it I didn't understand. Then I survived a night and suddenly a lot of shit made a lot more sense lol.
I love that about this game. There are no level ups, there is no getting stronger in any way. There are no quest logs or objectives or anything. Just you, the ecosystem, and the world it inhabits. YOU are the slugcat. You wanna get, "stronger and better?" Watch and learn how the world works. Observe the wildlife. Experiment. So many times this game had me go, "ooohhhhhhh!" and suddenly I'm surviving for weeks at a time instead of a day or two lol.
And then make it to a new section of the map and realize there are new rules here, and then you do it again.
      Such a good game lol.

PLEASE continue this, the worldbuilding, lore, and environments are so rich in this game it is a real shame to touch it for a few hours then never again. literally the next region you are about to enter has something very special in it
for example, all animations are procedural, moving not via predetermined frames but based on the creatures' movement. or enemies, which have incredible AI focused on survival over just being an obstacle for you, with their own inter and intraspecies interactions and even working offscreen.

Rain World is one of my favorite games of all time and seeing another UA-camr play it brings me great joy. This game is phenomenal, yet so overlooked...
Most people just know it as "that one stupidly hard game that some people like for some reason" but it's so much more than that! The beautiful environments, great gameplay and a story deeper and more thought-provoking than that of many much more story-focused games... I could go on and on. Goodness, I wish this was a start to a full playthrough, but alas...

Yooo, this is the game that either pushes you away during the first couple of hours or pulls you in for life, I do highly recommend pushing through because it gets so weird and interesting and really existential at points, which is all the qualities I want from a librarian playthrough. But I understand not everyone has the patience or time to get used to the controls.

Addendum: one of the most frustrating things that's hard to catch is getting low to the ground severely nerfs your movement speed. There's a whole lot of more complex moves usually performed by doing several actions at once (like crouching and jumping, for example), but they're not strictly necessary to complete the game.

Delighted to find you taking a look at Rain World, though the game is brutal to newcomers as you must've noticed, and many, many don't go far before quitting. If you won't be able to fare with the difficulty, that is totally fine, but if you'll decide to persevere *still*, despite the frustration and your schedule (and look past some bullshit like those scavs not accepting your pearl (unless you were not supposed to pick up any thing of theirs before they 'allow' you to pass? i will be honest, i am not sure why exactly they attacked the first time)), you'll be rewarded with an experience like no other. The 'difficulty select' screen was saying the truth: you are not just a prey, but a predator as well...
One tip i do want to give you for whenever you would return for another try as it is practically impossible to 'figure out': "Game Over" doesn't always mean Game Over =з

you say you aren't good at platformers but honestly you were moving a lot better than most people who first play the game. its a very obstinate and frustrating game. honestly its a little less game and more tries to be an artwork through just being overall mean to the player. the lore and themes of the game borrow heavily from eastern beliefs and gives an incredible experience after so much struggle. honestly, its probably my favorite game because its really difficult and at times unfair. So its understandable if you don't want to play this again, but here are some tips for your sluggy survival in case you do:
you can double tap grab to switch which hand you have selected (always throw with the left hand). you also have a third storage slot in your stomach. non edible things can be stored by holding eat. you can also press down and grab to drop things.
those symbols (that appear when you hibernate) are referred to as karma. you can pass through any gate gate that your karma is of sufficient level. you don't need to be at level 5 karma to pass. in general, the higher the requirement a gate is the more difficult the next area is expected to be. Also the yellow friend who tries to (but rather poorly) guides you is called iggy :).
you have a clock to tell when the rain is coming. hold map and the tiny circles around your karma each represent 30 seconds to the cycle.

Some clarification for things you misunderstood. So that your hopefully less frustrated.
    - The leveling up bar doesn't need to be at max to pass through gates, your symbol simply needs to match the symbol on your side of the gate or be higher than that. So maxing out can be helpful but it isn't necessary.
    - those little laser grubs need to be in a room with an open ceiling to work.
    - you need to gently place the pearl on the ground to garentee that the scavengers will accept it. It's like if you threw your passport in the face of border control, that wouldn't fly. There are controls on how to gently place object in the pause screen

the game definitely has an aspect of "throwing yourself into a wall 'till you go through it", and it is definitely hard and unforgiving, but i don't think it's hard the "usual way"
i don't think the game has a lot of rng elements beside the enemy spawns (i *felt it* trust me), it's more that it's sandboxy and the enemies have behavioral patterns like living animals, rather than scripted programming npcs in games usually have

Hey! So, after watching the video I do have a couple words to say. Don't worry, I won't try to persuade you into finishing the game, just want to explain some things. I know the game is hard and, I promise you that, it gets WAY harder further on. If you don't like the gameplay loop enough to continue, it's perfectly fine to stop where you stopped and leave without ruining those few good memories you've made. This game really demands all your time and attention, and it's completely understandable if you're not able or willing to give it this much. But, there is a reason why some people are willing. The incredible atmosphere you've described is one thing, but there is something more to it. Something deeper. See, the really obnoxious cycle of dying and resetting progress that drives so many people away is there to teach a lesson. The game doesn't let you just progress to another area after reaching the gate not because it's quirky like that, but because it wants you to prove that you can survive in the current one. Not get through it with sheer luck, not force yourself through it like one does with so many other games you didn't like before. Survive. Survive and thrive, despite anything that may happen. It wants you to prove that no matter what happens, you will not quit. You will keep trying. You will keep learning, keep improving and for every failure you will find your misstep and learn a solution. What if there is no solution and the death was purely rng? Well, why should that stop you? Only when it knows you can survive where you are will it let you try to overcome a new challenge. I know that this sounds like one of those cheap motivational ads, but this experience feels so much more, profound than that? In the beginning I too was barely stumbling my way through this world (although i do have to say, you did so much better at learning the mechanics than many others). Now, werid as it may seem, I don't feel like this game is that reliant on rng. I can fight off multiple lizards at once, I don't struggle at all with finding food, I can kill vultures (the big birds) with a single spear, I can traverse multiple areas in a single day and so much more. And I don't even know half the movement tech! Once I lost an 8 hour expedition (a game mode with objectives and permadeath) because i ran into a place I could not for the life of me get out of. I sat back, looking at the death screen. Closed the game. Sat there for a while in silence. Then I opened it up again, loudly said "I love this game" with a newfound smile on my face and started another expedition. I cannot overstate enough how good that moment felt. When I realised that despite anything that may happen, I CAN stand back up and keep enyoing the world. Despite all the horrible and unfair things that happen all around me I actually WANT to keep living for those little moments of wonder. And above all, I want others to experience this too. That's why so many people faithfully kept recommending this game to you. Personally I love finding new "victims" to show this game to and carefully walking them through it, explaining what I wished I knew when I was just starting but still letting them learn through their own experience, always ready to help them up when they fall. Its honestly nearly like raising a child. This rant is getting long, but there's STILL more to this game. The ending was honesty the closest thing to a spiritual experience I had, the story can teach you so much more. Once I saw a lore iceberg and even after nearly 300 hours of playing the game and at least the same of just enjoing content of it I still only get like the tenth of it. If you are at all interested in the game, I really recommend watching someone else's playtrhrough (maybe one of those no commentary ones for the best experience?). Last, thank you so much for suffering through my rant! I do have to learn how to write them better, but I hope I explained some things! :)
    Edit:
AH! ALSO if you do decide to give this game another go, feel free to play as monk! The story is a little bit different, but creatures are less aggressive and gates stay open. There are also a bunch of mods that can improve the experience, like one that makes the camera follow you!

YO HEY, i noticed you have a problem with gates as a whole (and the karma system, the leveling up system), and you can actually turn some of those things off
monk has an easier campaign as a whole, plus the gates stay open if you have gone through them at least once; this system can be turned on for everyone with the accessibility settings in the rain world remix setting. this is turned on by going to the remix option, turning on rain world remix, applying it, and then going back to that menu and then clicking the options name.
also you can turn off karma requirements as a whole in those same settings.
please don't drop rain world just yet, its a hard game i know, but no one likes there first attempt at it anyways.

I wish I had found this when you first uploaded it because I have a LOT to say about this game, but I just went through a huge move and was without internet for several days...
What I love about this game is that despite not focusing on horror elements much at all, it can be truly terrifying at times in a way that does a great job of making you feel like a tiny portion of a massive living world. Every little creature, from the smallest prey to the biggest predator, is always out there somewhere doing something. No scripted chase sequences where the big scary monster just spawns in right out of your line of sight. When something finds you, it's because it was moving around looking for its objectives just like you were. It feels so organic, moreso than any other video game I've ever seen or played. To the point that my typical defense mechanism of rationalization straight-up doesn't work. It doesn't matter how thoroughly I remind myself that the monsters aren't real, they feel and act real, and the danger they impose on my tiny player character is very real. Metroidvanias really aren't my cup of tea, so I've never played past the first area of the game. But that doesn't mean I can't respect Rain World for what it is; an incredible concept with incredible execution on almost every front. It's such a gem that even though I don't really enjoy playing it, it's still one of my all-time favorite games.

Hey, I´ve just found your channel through this video and I have to say please make this into a series. Rain World isn´t just a platformer or a survival game, it´s ... something else it´s ... ... ... an entire experience. If you play this masterpiece of a game it´ll truly change you. It will make you laugh with joy, cry in agony, shout in anger and gasp in awe. Every time you´ll feel like you know the story it´ll reveal an entire layer you haven´t seen before. The ending of the first campaign will leave you speechless. Every other campaign introduces a new mechanic, a new twist and a new way to make you cry, be it with happiness or sadness. Please play it, all of it, despite all the struggels and challenges you won´t regret it.

But after you get over that learning curve its (mostly) smooth sailing and you really start to enjoy the game! Despite hating stressful games and any game with hostile creatures, rain world managed to drag me in, especially when finally getting over a frustrating obstacle. I’d say keep practicing and playing the game and if youre really having trouble, the wiki is really useful for tips on how to deal with creatures and what is or isn’t food

a few non spoilery tips in case you continue:
-your map has layers! and you can change between them by pressing the jump and throw buttons
-for the gates you need to have the same or above level that it shows you, and to get thru you have to stand still on it for a second thats why it didnt work a few times
-your yellow guide guy points out multiple stuff with different colors, red means danger, the greenish blue is something food related and yellow is some place it wants you to go
-while diving you can press jump to boost however it makes you lose A LOT of air so is not good for long distances
-the golden flowers let you not lose your level ONCE after dying
-finally and most importantly if you want the game itself to be a bit less immersive and give you a few hints each time you die there a "remix" option in the tittle screen, its a mod manager but comes with a preinstalled mod called remix which is basically quality of life stuff and some accessibility features

Wow, it might just be the way you're cutting the video, but it seems like you've approached the game with a far better mindset than almost anyone else I've seen.
Most people are rushing for progress, and get frustrated trying to get past the first gate. Think what you were experiencing with the Garbage Wastes gate, but from the start of the game.
But you, you spent the first few days just surviving and learning the world. And that meant were (somewhat) ready for what lies beyond the gate. (And it sounded like you were very much enjoying yourself, at least compared to your experience in the Garbage Wastes)
I think this is the best way to first play the game, learning to not only survive but thrive within the world, before putting your attention towards objectives such as traveling to new regions.
I mean, why would a little Slugcat concern itself with the intentions of a mysterious glowing eye if it's having trouble even surviving.
It is very easy to spoil this game, a lot of the fun is discovering things yourself and not knowing how much more there is to discover.
But, there is something I think you should know, some basic controls:
Down + Grab = Drop item (Much better for giving to Scavengers)
Double-Press Grab = Switch items between hands (Slugcat will throw from their right hand first)
You only need to Press Up or Down to make the Slugcat Stand or Crawl (You don't need to hold)

If you press down+ X/throw(either throw or equip), you can drop items safely and for scavenger tolls you need to wait until they start waving then they let you pass, also scavengers REALLY love pearls also any other object like spears can be traded too. Also don't take stuff from scavengers they get real mad.

Rainworld is a game best experience blind for a few hours, but becomes quickly frustrating. I’d suggest revisiting the game with some tips to help survive if you don’t want to be stuck for days on end. Directions or movement tips, because it helped me massively avoid hating the hardships, that are fun for a while but not forever.

I think some of your complaints are valid, but I also think you went into this game with the wrong mindset. When I first heard of this game I heard it's a hard survival sandbox where you will die a lot and you need to think tactically about resources and locations. You came into the game with the platforming aspect and wildlife aspect around.
The whole charm for me is that it's a learning experience and each mechanic is something to conqured to survive and dominate the eco system.
Also some of your complaints can be changed in the settings, for example you can basically turn the rain off, make some things easier, add some QOL features etc.
Btw, the "Level mechanic" is there to test you to see if you can survive, but is only required to change regions, at first it's hard but later on you barely even die that often, if you are exploring a region however you don't have to survive that long.
