These videos have come a long way. I watched the earliest hymn history video and then watched this one, much improved. Thanks for the series, hope we continue it!
I recently purchased a book of Isaac Watt's hymns and have been trying to learn from him in some small way, how to express the deep truths of God's Word in modern worship. This video was so helpful! Thank You
That's awesome! Love your heart here! If there are any revelations you learn from your studies I'd be interested to hear them, appreciate your encouragement
Thank you so much for putting this particular information up on Isaac whose name I've seen all my life. Do you know any information on why he wrote I Sing the Mighty Power of God? Great job!
Thanks! Yeah, I remember that it was originally written as a hymn for children. I’ve heard it was possibly used to solidify or augment the ideas recited in the Apostle’s Creed, specifically the concept of God the Father as maker of heaven and earth. As a teaching tool it makes sense, this song expands that idea pretty well and explains it in more detail, especially some of the now removed verses that talk more about how everything belongs to God, how even the air we breathe came from Him and belongs to Him.
Indeed, there are two more stanzas to the hymn that continues to magnify and increase God's influence and presence in all creation concluding with the words ...everywhere that we can be, thou God, art present there. Very heady and exhilarating and true. Thanks for the reply. 😊
I couldn't begin to know how to do UA-cam videos in terms of knowing how to comport myself on camera but focus more on the subject and less on humor that may or not be there. God bless brother.
Truly, I appreciate your delivery style...your exuberance/ your feelings about the strong words of truth in old hymns which modern-day songwriters remove. God have mercy. Keep up the good work!
Great recommendation!! I want you to know I went down a massive rabbit hole trying to understand the difference between the Church of Christ that I was more familiar with, the ones that don't use instruments, with the Church of Christ Holiness denomination of CP Jones. It's been informative and fun studying this so far, so thank you!
Absolutely! David wrote several messianic passages, and I believe all the beautiful poetry and divinely inspired insights he wrote are proof he was often filled with the holy spirit. Do you happen to have a favorite passage?
That sounds right, certainly reformed theologians cite him and his writings enough! I know his first post as a minister was with a Church of Christ congregation in England. It’s been a minute since I’ve done a deep dive on Watts, let me look at my notes.
Today we sing such unscriptural, out of context hymns. This is a great tragedy. Song writers pick and choose what verses of Psalms to sing. They only sing the flowery verses, and stop short of singing the entire psalm in context. For example, Maranatha singers have a song by the name of Psalm 5. But they only sing the first few verses of that Psalm because those verses trickle the ears. But when it comes to God's views of sin and the sinner - They don't sing that. Hundreds of years of such practices have led to GREAT corruption within the church. Surely, Isaac Watts did a great deal of damage. We need to get back to the way it originally was - sing the Psalms, the whole Psalms. And nothing but the Psalms.
I largely agree with the premise that you've put forward. I agree that it is unacceptable that we only choose to sing the most watered down verses and ignore verses on judgement and sin. It all should have a place in our worship. That said... Is there then no use for spiritual song in the worship of the church? Also, not all Psalms are fit to sing. Shall we sing of dashing our enemy's babies against the rocks? (Psalm 137... no) We pick and choose Psalms to set. And there's a reason for that. It's hard to put the blame on Watts for what contemporary artists are doing, although he may have been an early trendsetter. Let me think more on that. There's a family named the Getty's that are leading a return to "singing the scriptures," although they write scriptural paraphrase and spiritual song also. Is that something you've looked at and have an opinion on?
Exactly! We can't shy away from the truth of our world that is sinful and in need of saving, and we can't forget how awesome God truly is, to fear the Lord.
Yes...also Elizabeth Hewitt...I am currently a Christian school principal and we are looking at hymn writers during our morning Chapels. Thanks for your posts...I will use your history for Chapel this week. Blessings

Love it!! ❤️
I've always thought that "When I survey" was the most beautiful hymn ever written. I'm delighted to know that Charles Wesley agrees with me.
Haha, absolutely! 💯
What was your favorite hymn writer we talked about? Which was your favorite video? (Did they match up?) Thanks for all your support! 🙏
i think i liked charles wesley the best out of these all

I have thought of this exact thing
Why don’t we sing of the Fear of God
Or our sinful states . These songs would be powerful
