  • BOSS Shotshells has just released their new Steel Reserve waterfowl hunting load and I pattern tested and ballistics gel tested it along with counting the pellets in the shells and calculating the felt recoil. This copper plated steel duck hunting and goose hunting ammo is designed for shots over decoys within 30 yards but I tested it at 20, 30, and 40 yards in the both the #1 and #3 shot. BOSS is best known for their copper plated bismuth and Warchief bismuth loads and just launched this steel line.

    The Steel Reserve is a direct competitor with Kent Fasteel, HEVI Steel, MIGRA Steel, Winchester Blindside, XPERT, Federal Black Cloud, and other premier steel loads or those using plated shot. I tested these shells on a certified range with all proper safety equipment, using my Mossberg 940 Pro Waterfowl. It turned out to be a great load. #duckhunting #waterfowlhunting #goosehunting

    It would be really cool to see this in a head to head with Kent Fasteel, as a comparison to another high quality plated steel shot and the best steel ammo that I've found for me. Thanks for all you do.

    I too am a Boss Program Member, l patterned my Steel Reserve shells at 30 yards in a SBE 3 26” barrel with lengthened forcing cone and a Rob Robert’s R2 choke. The #3s put 162 pellets in 30” at 30 yards.

      Those of you out there using expensive shot -take note of my last decoying on the marsh. 3" 1-1/4 oz steel 3's for the first shot. 3-1/2" 1-3/8 3's for second. And the third shot 1-3/8 2s. Using a Browning A5 and 1/4 choke. I had 2 doubles on wigeon; 1 on teal.2 with 2 shots 2 with 3 shots and a couple of singles. Ending up with 9 wigeon and 3 teal Only needing 4 cripple stoppers. BUT I have been shooting over 50 years.

    I used to shoot copper plated steel. I think this was back in the mid 90's and made by Winchester. Seemed to me it killed much better than plain steel shot. I always attributed the added weight of the copper helped to deliver more energy to the birds.

    The main and only real benefit I see in cooper costing the steel is that it keeps the shot from rusting.
    Olin ( Winchester) copper plated steel shot in the 90s. I still have a box of Winchester Siper X, Steel Copper plated shot (Tshot). My FIL hated steel shot, and probably over corrected w that T shot.

    Those were pretty good patterns considering shot size and payload. I think the 1 3/8oz #3 will produce a good even dense pattern out to 40 and should work great used properly. I plan on placing a pre order for some now and the wolfram loads.

    Another great video.Those of you out there using steel; get a couple boxes of both and mark the base of the 1's with a black marker stripe. With two No3's for the first and second shot and a No1 for the third shot you will start to get those elusive tripples: as ducks backs are extreemly hard and the 1's wiil do the trick. Nice to see a proper wildfowling book. I wrote one in the 80's as I was sick of reading books with no explainatary content. This book was called 'Ultimate Fowling', where I explained EVERYTHING inc:- reloads. And the greatest tip of all -start at the back of the flock as they fly past, as then they do not know they are been shot at, When we were allowed shots I had several 5 for5 on wigeon and one day the 'impossible' 5 teal for 5!

    Not really surprising. In fact, I believe this move was long overdue and I sincerely hope they broaden the product line. Having a more affordable non-toxic shot product line would certainly help the branding on a number of different levels. Given my experience with steel, I would have no doubt that these loads could be stretched beyond 30 yards. Further to this, given the historic price stability of soft iron, it’s a sure thing hunters will continue to have ready access to it. Let’s hope we never see the raw material price increases (ie. 100-200%) that we saw back in 2006/2007…..bismuth, copper, tungsten based product would be prohibitively expensive to access.

    George, good data and will be interesting to see how it compares to Kent plated and "bargain" brands Fiocchi, Rio, and even Herters. The pattern density at 20&30 yards is no surprise as a Mod is the equivalent of Full for steel. What I noticed about the patterns was lack of uniformity. For me, it would be hard to justify their premium price, based on website their $24 for box of 20 would related to $30 for box of anyone else's 25.

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide

    Why do people think that steel isn’t good past 30? I hunt on open water and routinely make shots 40-50 because divers don’t always decoy and swing wide. Are they always an instant kill shot? No but more likely than not they are.

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  19 днів тому

      The ballistics of steel begin to deteriorate fast and bad after around 40 yards, depending on shot size. #3 steel is good on ducks to maybe 45 to 50 yards. #4 drops off the minimum mark faster. #2 and bigger have the power for more range but not the pattern density needed to effectively make use of the power. I don't know where the 30 yard rhetoric came from. My testing has never shown that.

    The cynic in me says that they're loading 1 1/8 ounce steel loads because it's about as much as they can fit in their new wad... Curious how they say that 1 1/8 ounce of 1's has all the pellets you need out to 30 yards, yet will also take your money and give you bismuth 5's (which don't penetrate as well as steel 1's) and cite the higher pellet count as an advantage over steel shot. Well which is it?
    Either of those cartridges would perform very well on ducks out to at least 40 yards, I think I'd prefer them over any bismuth offerings in size 4 shot or smaller in all honesty.

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  5 місяців тому +2

      They announced they will offer a 1 3/8 version of the Steel Reserve this fall, due to the demand. I think they are just trying to get as many customers as possible. Some want steel, so they will sell steel. I'd rather shoot the Bismuth #5s legacy at close range myself, but that's just me.

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  5 місяців тому

      @saltcreekammo actually it's the reverse. In 20% gel you'd get half the penetration because it's twice as thick. You want 1.5" for a duck in 20% and 3" in 10%. That's the going rate anyway. In truth those numbers are based on old gel calibrations we can no longer verify. But it's the best we've got until someone spends millions of dollar in another country to do the proper test research on live birds and modern gel. Which isn't likely to happen for obvious reasons.

    First of all, you get a large piece of paper. Maybe 45 inches square put a dot center about the size of a golf ball. Can you make a 30 inch? Diameter circle, then you use some type of arrest to do your patterning. Because you want to see what the actual gun and ammo will do not. If you're shaking a little bit offhand or not. You want to see what the gun and ammo is capable of you. Shoot just to the bottom of the dot then you can tell if your appellant's rise are left. Alright, and it's no human error because you use an arrest. Then you count every palette and you find the percentage in that 30 inch. Circle. And then the rest of the paper you can see how the spread of the pattern is. I've been doing this for 65 years with a lot of different jokes. I had a lot of different animal. You do a good job, but you don't do it correctly like your videos, but some of the stuff that way you're doing. It is not right. You're a young man you'll learn

      You know. There is alot that could be done to tighten up this process. But they all take more time, and/or more money. I only have so much of both when I go to make one of these videos. To sacrifice a little precision to save time, is a welcome trade off much of the time. When I go to the range, its usually a 5 hour video session and i have to get 3 videos done usually. I'm just limited.
