Best Bismuth Shot Size For Duck Hunting? TESTED
Stop leaving yourself vulnerable to data breaches. Go to my sponsor www.Aura.com/NHG to get a 14-day free trial and see if any of your data has been exposed. What is the best pellet size of bismuth for hunting ducks? I pattern tested and ballistics gel tested BOSS Warchief copper plated bismuth number 5, 4, and 3 against Kent Fasteel 2.0 steel 3s. The goal was to determine the best pattern efficiency and ballistics gel penetration to see which ammo is best for hunting wood ducks, teal, mallard, puddle ducks, geese, pheasants, and more.

    Winchester super x hv steel vs. Winchester dryloc steel. Non-plated vs plated shot. Plating increases lubricity/performance slightly. Also it reduces corrosion from the pellets rusting while in the wet duck hunting conditions. Super x steel= 17.99/box today. Dryloc steel= 23-25.99/box. Plating the shot costs more. But is higher quality.

    I've just recently started watching your channel. One thing I'd like to see is the BOSS original bismuth 3" 3/5 through the Carlsons Cremator mid and long range chokes. I personally shoot a Franchi Affinity 3, so if you have the ability to run that combo, it would be even better for me, but I'd be happy just to see your take on the choke/load combo. Love seeing the charts and patterns and all the data really helps me make sense of everything.

    • @1776cootsflybynight

      I have 2 affinity 3's and use both cremator chokes. Both guns pattern different with the same choke. I'd recommend getting a few different sizes of boss and papering it. I was amazed and kinda disappointed in myself for not doing it sooner

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide 2 дні тому

      So the cremator is actually a steel choke, it has less constriction. Its the equivalent of modified and improved modified for most guns. Those two would be great for short range hunting with the legacy load. Not meant to be a long range combo.

      @TheNewHuntersGuide How can it be equivalent to an improved or modified? The long range choke suggests 40 yards and beyond, and the midrange suggests 25-40 yards. I have also personally run steel loads through them and seen worse patterns. I'll have to test it out again and see what I find. What do you recommend for a choke for bismuth based on your findings? I typically don't shoot past 40 yards in most of my hunts.

    Bismuth is not for me. I shot a lot of different companies ammo and had not so good luck. Late season birds have heavy down and pellets didn’t penetrate well. All birds take was a result in head or neck wounds. Some birds you could see how the pellets passed over the skin and plucked off feathers. In the end #3 bismuth is what I found would do the job more often than any other shot size. Tungsten 18 and 12 is the closest thing I found to lead, does way better than any of those lead loads. Pattern pellet count and range.

    I crushed snows last year with war Chief 5s at 40+ yards. The factory mod choke in my SBEII HAD 200 pellets in circle at 40.(1 1/4 oz shorty). If you look at the patterns the 5s were effective out to the 30 in circ line. The others had gaps. Bottom line is you want the pattern and penetration to lose their effectiveness at the same distance. The number of pellets in the circle needs to be lethal from edge to edge. (100-125 not that 250 wouldn’t do the job). Have you pattern tested the stinger loads. My mod tube had 125 in the circ at 40. The recoil is like my dove loads. Pattern and penetration losing effectiveness at the same distance? I could only imagine that happening in some instances. If you’re shooting ducks at 20 yards, I don’t think your penetration will be maxed out no matter the shot type, unless it’s number 8 steel or something. I don’t even think you could get a pattern to be at its maximum efficacy at that distance either.

    • @scottsantrizos6849

      Pair your shot size to the bird you are hunting , say 5s for ducks. If 5s can kill at 40 yrds which I think they can then adjust your choke so that you get what you feel is the needed number of pellets in the 30 in circle. Or more so pellets per square inch, no matter pattern size. Why have 250 pellets in the circle if you only need 100. If I remember right George is good with 100 pellets in the circle. He could probably get that with the Muller decoy choke and then have a larger margin for error. Even though he probably centers all the birds he shoots. Hope I explained my theory like I see it in my minds eye. 😮

    How much better does #6 or 8shot break legs, necks, and wings? Not a single vulnerable system is 3" thick. Most things are about a hard to break as a #2 pencil. In my mind far more hits on target bring birds down faster than a couple deep penetratimg holes. But we need numbers!

      It's a good question. I've never used bismuth smaller than 5s. I'd like to do some testing though.

    Would love to see a test with Shotz ammo companys Pulverizer load. Its 13/8 oz of steel #8 shot and from the videos I have seen it has been crushing ducks and geese

    George, congrats for another awesome video. If I might suggest, get yourself a Mec 600jr some bismuth from Rotometal and never look back. All you need is 2.3/4" hulls for all waterfowl and upland game. BTW, your BOSS hulls measure 0.805"++ and that's why the gun doesn't eject them.

      Thanks! You know it hasn't wanted to eject much of anything, steel, bismuth or lead, 2.75 or 3" in the last 2 outings. I need to be break it down and do a deep clean. It has shot boss and everything else great for a long time.
