My Dad was stationed in NZ and South Pacific after WW2, this was his favourite song and played it at his funeral, still brings tears to my eyes
She sings for all of us especially us expats who miss Aotearoa so much
What a voice, send shivers down my spine, this is a beautiful, Maori song that is a part of all New Zealanders history. A song, a voice that deserves to be shared with the world. Hayley may not be of Maori decent but she is a Kiwi woman with a voice that could compete with the best in the world. As a part Maori, I am proud that she thinks enough of this song to perform it and perform it with such class. love it
Hayley Westenra has Maori ancestry - Her great grandfather (mother's side) was Maori.
Always important to check whakapapa. Hayley is certainly Maori, Te Arawa to my knowledge.
Hayleys koro is maori.

Thank you Hayley for a culture that few westerners ( including me) I did see a movie about their lives, it’s a powerful and poignant movie. Sorry I don’t remember the name.
Sorry, if someone does.. please let me know.
She sings like an angel.
Played at my dad's funeral, in August 2020. Voice of an angel, I just disintegrated listening to it as I did when we said goodbye, miss you dad always x
One of our most underrated artist in Aotearoa
This one of the most beautiful arias and because it is sung in its native tongue makes it all the more beautiful
Dedicated to my cousin, Dr John McKay, who has sadly Passed Away at home in NZ. God Rest Him.
Beautiful.... brings tears to the eyes.... people singing this at the Airport when the All Blacks came home having won the World Cup for 3rd time - stunning and hugely emotional......
With Commonwealth Day coming up on March 13th, I played this again, because I learnt this song in the Girl Guides (I'm from UK) more than 50 years ago, for the same celebration then, and I have never forgotten the words.
Such a stunning rendition by Hayley.❤
Yes, it is a lovely song.
My daughter currently goes to Guides - I hope she takes the positive things she is learning there through her life like you have Rachel.
Kia Ora, my Kiwi friends, every where! ANZACS, forever.
Thank you Hayley for so many beautiful moments like this,
If a life is measured by the joy and pleasure you bring to the hearts of other people then you have excelled,
may the joy and happiness you bring to others return to you a thousandfold.
I was there in pouring rain, still an amazing concert. Hayley sang just as beautifully as ever even in the middle of torrential rain and wind, on a summer evening in Wales :)
My husband and l heard this sung at Tyne Cott in France when we visited it on 11/11/2016 it was sung by a young lady accompanied by a band of the London Metropolitan Police Band it brought a shiver down our backs and every time l hear this it still does
1980, New Zealand, I remember beautifull moments in Auckalnd and Rotorua 😍 my Family was happy to live there.
You know you have a fragile heart that beats inside of you when listening to indescribable beauty.. Truly an Angel .. God Bless You and Thankyou Hayley 🥰

Oh my goodness, I just googled Pokarekare Ana as we learnt it in Primary School, to be amazed by this voice. So pure and strong.
Dear One, did anyone ever remark to you how very distinctive is that marvelous voice of yours...It is as mysterious and beautiful as that lovely land you hail from...I have adored your sound from the very first moment that I heard it ...be well and may good fortune follow you and those dear to you always...I send to you my very best regards...love...
She must've been freezing but my goodness, she still sang beautifully!!
So beautiful!
Music can be shared by all mankind and bring us together, just as this magnificent rendition of this soulful song does - mush better than politicians, wars, universities and business - we can all just kick back and absorb the beauty of great music. thanks for the post.
언젠가 "꼭 들어봐야 하는 연가"라는 타이틀을 본 적이 있슴다. 정말 아름다운 곡 임다.
헤이레이양의 조용한 열창으로 다시 한 번깊은 감동을 받습니다.
I'm having this sung at my Funeral. As my coffin makes it's way into the cremation chamber, it is accompanied by the strains of this absolutely beautiful Song 🎵.
God Bless you All who attend 🙏.
❤ Love ❤️. 🇬🇧🏴
That was beautiful. I wish I could hear her more.
I am from Malaysia. As a child, someone taught me this song. I never knew it was sung in Te Reo Maori, until I was an adult.
It was one of the most beautiful songs I learnt as a child. I’m an adult now, and I get to call New Zealand home soon. Blessed isn’t even the word.
This song and beautiful NZ in general always makes me tear up. So so darn beautiful, there are just no other words to describe it ♥️
It was 14 deg C or 57 deg F in that part of the World at 9pm, with a bit of a breeze. Chilly when wearing a stage dress in the open air, you can see the condensation from her breath!
Absolutely stunning...What an angelic voice.
Voice of an angel!
She is not only syunningly beautiful, she can sing, Awesome.
That song is so amazing i just love it
i learnt this song as a child taught by my school in singapore, that was 50 years ago. Beautiful melody although i dont know the meaning. Still hummed this song
What a country! With a great combo of modern life and a beautiful Māori/indigenous culture for a point of difference
she is amazing at singing!

This classic Hayley's hit sounds even better with her matured voice now...
Thank you
Hyper belle. Intelligente. Une grande douceur. Une voix magnifique. Une très belle âme aussi.
I love this song and Hayley
Love it
FANTASTIC!
Well seven people suck. She's got a gorgeous voice and does this song with perfection. Instant thumbs up.
@Adam Holland I always think it strange how people that listen to a song and dislike it get slammed by people that do. Are you not behaving in a similar fashion? Not liking someone for disliking something you like!
Stunning ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Awesome voice
Great voice.
Pokarekare ana
Nga wai o waiapu
Whiti atu koe hine
Marino ana e
E hine e
Hoki maira
Kamate au
-i te aroha e
Tuhituhi taku rita
Tuku atu taku ringi
Kia kiti to iwi
Raru raru ana e
E hine e
Hoki maira
Kamate au I could die
-i te aroha e
E hine e
Hoki maira
Kamate au
-i te aroha e
Kamate au I could die
-i te aroha e Of love for you
[English translation:]
Stormy are the waters
Of restless Waiapu
If you cross them, girl
They will be calmed
Oh girl
Come back to me
I could die
Of love for you
I write you my letter
I send you my ring
So your people can see
How troubled I am
Oh girl
Come back to me
I could die
Of love for you
Oh girl
Come back to me
I could die
Of love for you
I could die
Of love (for you).
Thank you
André Zomerwandeling Wonderfull, thank you.
. What a voice
Beautiful song and voice, brava
@Liz Stubbs Tuffin - part Maori (and for those who think only a full Maori should sing this song) .... my dad, a blonde, blue eyed, short Anglo Saxon would sing this song, saying it was one of the most beautiful songs he knew. He heard it first during WW2 in the Far East sung by Kiwis in fellow RAF crews who taught him the words. So, indeed be rightly proud, but also proudly share ......
Insperato62 As it is generally accepted that the last full blooded Maori died in the 1960's in the Chatham Islands it would be difficult to meet that restriction on who is allowed to sing this song.
I agree!
Our Hayley, our angel. God bless NZ.
Haley (Gwyl Gobaith 2012) Video & beautiful great sound quality - Pokarekare Ana really great singing voice, beautiful

thanks.
happy~
Don't understand a word, but her voice moves you! Beautiful!!
They are agitated,
the waters of Waiapu,
But when you cross over girl,
they will be calm.
Oh, girl,
return to me,
I could die
of love for you.
I have written my letter,
I have sent my ring,
so that your people can see
that I am troubled.
My poor pen is shattered,
I have no more paper,
But my love
is still steadfast.
My love will never
be dried by the sun,
it will be forever moistened
by my tears.
Děkuji.
Something about this song reminds me of Aloha ʻOe by Liliʻuokalani.
입김을 보니 추워 보이는데, 아름다운 음색과 기타 선율..최고..
Beautiful 💟💟💟💗😃
nice thanks
Que vozeirão e lindo á música

Masterpiece
Or not
I like the older versions better. Of course I am not hearing it in person. It is not her voice but the style. I really loved her performance with Ding in China. Voice and interpretation outstanding.
Ouvi-la em qualquer idioma é de+ emocionante. Gostaria de ouvi-la em português.
Liz sorry Hayley is of Maori decent in mums side. Dutch on dad's side, Hayley sings this better than many I have heard.
❤
nice
stephshan it's Māori (from NZ)

Maybe it was just the song but I saw sadness in her eyes, even as she smiled at the end.
I hope everything is going well for her.
