Thanks for this brilliant and complete review - I've gone ahead and bought one of these - currently they can be found here in Europe with very big discounts as the model is being replaced but with these great specs it is now a real bargain!
This video answers all my questions! RAM/SSD upgradeability, internal GPU performance, and the performance of the CPU to use with an external GPU. Thanks! This has been a great help in my transition from desktop to laptop+eGPU.
Awesome video, and thanks for the teardown... There was a lot of different information floating around regarding ram upgradability. Would you be able to do a comparison between temperatures and fan noise with the old model by any chance? Or maybe with some model with similar specifications?
Excellent video! the most informative video I have seen regarding this laptop model. In one of your replies to the comments below, you stated that there is no room to add an additional internal SSD. However, when customizing the specs on the HP website, there is an option to choose intel SSD's with Optane Memory instead of M.2 Nvme for internal storage. I am wondering if the black area shown to the right hand side of the battery is where an additional internal SSD would be installed. Please let me know.
Thanks for the very helpful tear-down. Nobody else so far has done this. I am curious about one particular thing, though - what is the maximum capacity ssd that this system can work with? For example, if I got a 4TB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD, would it work in this unit? I'm very impressed by your work, so I've subbed up to your channel. Keep up the good work!
Great review! Finally someone that gives clarity on whether usb-c charging works and what impact it has. Did you try any USB-C / TB3 docking stations by chance? Heard that HP laptops tend to have compatibility issues
hi, thanks for this excellent review (best on youtube by far!) Are you planning to repaste it? I should get my spectre in the mail in about a week or two and I'd like to repaste it, I was able to do my XPS 9570, but for that, there are lots of instructions online. Would you possibly make a video of doing it, if you do it? Do you think removing the heatsink would be difficult? Thanks!
If I run into thermal issues I might consider adding different thermal compound to the Heatsinks, but as of right now the thermals are pretty good. If I do end up doing it, I will for sure make a video.
Does it allow you to add an extra internal harddrive? And did I hear you correctly about getting an extra performance boost if you use an external display through the HDMI port??? I bought the spectre x360 15t with the GTX 1650 16g ram 512gig hard drive I want to add a drive.
No room internally for another drive, but you can definitely upgrade the existing one to a larger size. The performance boost when playing over an external display only applies if you are using an eGPU Enclosure.
@@MrArmageddonBuilds it actually is removable, hp support shows how to do it for the 2019, 15 inch model. You do however have to remove and replace the mylar film that covers the metal memory cover over the RAM.
The one I just got from Best Buy (Canada) has a 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10510U with 4 cores. Is this "better" or "worse" than the 9th generation 6 core processor that comes with the direct from HP laptop?

The RAM is onboard but not soldered on and there is room to expand it. If you have the 16gb model the additional unit is taken up otherwise on the 8gb model it's free to use. but you cannot go above 16gb. I have this exact laptop and contacted HP. If yours is still in warranty they're happy for you to order the part, send it in and they'll do it for you. Excellent service, I'm quite impressed! Beats Apple any day!
I would personally still go with the Spectre. More CPU Cores, Faster GPU, Higher resolution screen and a bit thinner / lighter. If you need more IO ports (USB A & Ethernet) or must have a DVD drive, the Envy would be a good fit otherwise.
Fantastic review! extremely thorough and very well laid out!!. Question are you considering repasting the cpu/gpu? If you are, it would be amazing to see a video on that!! Im considering trying the liquid metal route but still not sure if that is the way to go.
@@MrSnoops3d I am. I have the 2017 Spectre 15t, and despite having lower spec components it gets very hot and the fans are almost always spinning up at full speed. The new one can at times, but it's much quieter for normal usage and light gaming.
First of all I want to say this is an awesome review that goes very in depth and detail since you did open it up to show the internals. I only wish you would have talked a bit more about the 2 in 1 feature even if it were to be brief. Also just a thought for when you tested the performance when using type c power sources could there possibly be some setting that could be making the GPU to run slower when in detects it's in battery mode or if the isn't enough power being supplied? If there is can it be turned off to see if that will increase performance but obviously decrease battery life?
In a recent firmware update, a setting is available for full power using DC (battery). I haven't tested yet, but guessing that would make things run at 100% clock speeds despite not having the full 135w available via the barrel plug... but it would probably chew through your battery very quickly.
Hello there, thanks for this most informative, well-made video! I was wondering if you have any plans to undervolt your unit's CPU and would expect a significant drop in temperature from that? I have the same laptop and did myself run into some thermal issues. When running CS:GO at max settings we see the CPU hitting the lower 90's C and the GPU in the lower 80's C at a room temperature of some 19 C. Reducing settings and locking the frame rate at max 60PFS did reduce temperatures significantly (can be done via the in-game menu for those who wonder). Indeed the machine is not really meant for intense gaming so you will see temps go up quite a bit if you push it hard for an extended period of time so careful everyone... (I suspect the heat from the GPU actually gets transferred on the CPU). Otherwise the machine performs really well and can't find fault with it. If anyone has any questions regarding the laptop I'd be happy to try and answer them. (Spectre x360, gem cut, 15 inch, FHD, 16GB, i7-8750H) Greetings from Amsterdam, Roger

I would like to know if the lower GPU performance when using USB-C is because of not using the barrel charger, or if its because the lower wattage, I know Dell has a 130 watt USB-C charger, would the GPU performance still be lower when using such a charger?
That's possible, but the current USB-C PD "spec" states a max of 20v @ 5A (100w) power transmission. I'm sure the cables can easily do 130w, but its possible Dell has a modified connector that can accept the extra wattage. If I can get my hands on a 130w USB-C charger, will test it out for sure... after I have verified that it won't fry the USB C port on my Spectre 😜
