At this point, I’m a fan of Slugger. Put out whatever makes you happy and I’m here for it.
I’ve always wanted to try this game. I’ve got Arena of the Planeswalkers with an expansion and I think it is pretty good! Not enough substance, but the gameplay is fun. I think I would really enjoy getting into Heroscape. Maybe once my group is done with Imperial Assault, we may try this.

    • @slugscaper

      Thank you so much! ❤️
Heroscape plays very similarly to Arena of the Planeswalkers, (as the latter was based on the former), but I think Heroscape pulls the game elements together in a more engaging way. The map building and army drafting elements in Heroscape give it so much replayability, always looking for new synergies and strategies! 😊
Cost is certainly the biggest barrier to entry though, no doubt there.

Yea that sounds like a Hasbro thing to do with haslab. When star wars projects are failing left and right, what chance did this have. Also I would have rather had my Victory Saber and Deathsarus as retail figures.
Also Id recommend getting in to the slop chop method of painting. I've painted some Kobolds and a Wyvern and the came out so good.
1:53 that good to see I made a cameo in this video!

"Not for the faint of cash" is what kept me out of Heroscape as a kid... now, even more so, plus not having anyone to play it _with_ (all my friends are online a continent away). I did always think the terrain building aspect was neat! For tabletop RPGs that use (or can be adapted to) a hex system rather than exclusively square grid, I can see this being a fantastic way for dungeon masters to build out overworld terrain maps (and the modularity means you can even experiment with _terrain altering_ abilities!)...

I was honestly surprised, how much is this game thought out. I now a lot of games with similar style, but non of them was so strategic. I always loved battles with sci-fi and fantasy, because the system of thinking in these genres. I would be aspacially interested in the sci-fi part of things, so, if you could offer that i would love that. I still can´t imagine how are he videos gonna look like, but I´m really looking forward to it. That´s all, thank you for reading!

    • @slugscaper
      @slugscaper  4 дні тому

Totally! The simplicity of Heroscape is one of its greatest strengths, in my opinion. The use of small numbers that matter leads to simple math and meaningful abilities.
The first few scripts I have written out are focused more on the historical and fantasy factions, but I will talk about the sci fi figures in the future, for sure!

I've thought about that game frequently since then, so how serendipitous for you to be into it!

I didn’t know anything about heroscape before watching this video, so here are my first impressions. The hexagonal terrain looks like a great way to add variety to rounds. It’s so customisable. A brilliant concept if ever there were one.
Seems pretty simple to play, which is good. It looks like a version of warhammer I’d actually be willing to try (and less money hungry at that).
Will I play it? No, probably not. Mainly because I don’t have the funds or the people to do so. But the figures look really cool, and them being pre-painted is great. The mashup of sci-fi, fantasy, and history would allow anyone to create their dream army.
All in all, looks pretty good.

I've been following and watching your R.R. Slugger channel for a good while now. You may have heard of it, but there’s a boardgame RPG, Gloomhaven, that has some similar build your map mechanics
But the RPG aspect uses decks of cards that slowly deplete as you run your adventure. Along with the expanding “legacy” aspect of the game (where your characters, world, and game evolve over time as you play)
It definitely scratched my HeroScape itch in more recent years and it is incredibly strategic and fun (if a bit unwieldy to set up)
Great if you have two or three gamer friends who can get together regularly.

I know this is a stretch slugger, but have you ever heard of Hasbro's short lived Stika spin off called "Xevoz" from the early 2000s? Thanks, and have fun.

I can't say I have! I just looked them up though and I dig the art style of their designs - very Mainframe Entertainment looking, but in toy form! 🙂

Will you have a HeroScape mixtape?

Probably just the one song, if I had to guess. I based it off of some melodies that can be heard in the old Heroscape cartoon show, but there's overall far less original source inspiration to work from with Heroscape than there is LEGO.

you should do a faction overview series or something, it is kinda annoying to easily find cohesive information on them

I’ve been thinking about that more and more now - originally, all of the scripts I had prepared ahead of time assume that the person watching already has intimate knowledge of the game. I don’t think that is the reality of the situation though, so I may want to pivot to some more beginner friendly content first before getting more technical. 🙂
A faction overview video is a great idea!

Indeed... an unfortunate reality of the original run of Heroscape - which, in retrospect, is why it was so affordable back then. Renegade Game Studios is doing things on the up and up this time, but that does significantly raise production costs.

As someone who designed a game, and then was personally attacked by strangers, over false accusations... i have to ask One question: why did Margo Carrot divorce James Carrot, designer of Heroscape?

Are you afraid that this will turn some years down the line into another Android: Netrunner situation? Now, we never got proper proof of all the details there, but, you may recall that the name Netrunner was licensed by Wizards of the Coast to Fantasy Flight Games in 2012, and then that license was revoked in 2018, causing a fairly abrupt end to Android: Netrunner's life as a game. What I mean to say is, if Renegade Game Studios are merely licensing HeroScape, and haven't bought the IP outright, then eventually either they will buy the IP outright, or the license will be revoked in a dramatic-and-frustrating fashion, right? Yes yes, no game lasts forever, even without these licensing issues... But it's gotta be a concern here, right?

It’s a fair consideration to have, for sure! Heroscape has been “dead” before though, but the community surrounding the game lived on. I’m just excited that there’s new official product right now. 😊
Additionally, it has apparently “out performed” Renegade’s expectations so far, so even when they do inevitably cease to license the brand, I’m pretty confident another studio will pick it up. I’ve heard Plaid Hat Games was interested in the IP, but ultimately was outbid on it! 😮
