There is a bug with the IR ring / internal IR illuminator in fact there are a whole lot of bugs. Something to think about when using the internal IR is that bugs can see it and are attracted to it, well, like bugs to a light . This means that bugs can trip the recording and on a particularly buggy night your video will look like a snow storm of bugs. That is why on my setup I use a separate IR illuminator to illuminate the area I'm interested in as far a way from the camera as possible. Folks in the buggy parts of the world need to be aware of this.
I just ordered the G4 Bullet as my first Unifi camera to replace Amazon Cloudcams. The G4 Bullet arrives tomorrow and am anxious to install it inside the home. Thanks for the great review! I love your channel and all the work you put into it. I refer back to your videos often.
Great video! Would also love to see a comparison between G4 bullet and G4 Pro image quality at the same field of view, especially for night time shots. The optical zoom on the G4 Pro should make this possible.
I’m still running G2’s at 720p for 4 years. I did upgrade from the NVR to Protect last year and I have a pile of G3’s to upgrade from when I though they were dying but they haven’t yet.
you all probably dont give a shit but does anyone know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me.
@Abdullah Marlon thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and im in the hacking process atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Great review but a little bummed you didn't go over more details as your previous reviews. A few things to note: 1. It has a limited operating temperature of 104 degrees vs 122 degrees (G3/Flex). Huge hit for those in hot climates 2. G4 looks like the picture is significantly cropped vs G3. Perhaps it's the resolution difference? 3. Zoom in clarity using night vision to show its sharpness and facial details of a person at night
The main question (IMO) is have they fixed the IR gate issue? I've had multiple failures over the past few years and it's always the same issue, stuck gates.
Chris, Good review but I have a question about the comparison of the G4 and the G4 pro in being able to recognize who it was walking in front of the cameras. Shouldn’t you be able to recognize the face by zooming in (without using the optical zoom) on the G4Pro vs the G4 since the resolution is much greater? In your video, I would think that using the G4 Pro zoomed (again with the optical zoom) in you could easily recognize the face at your driveway sidewalk and perhaps even the sidewalk across the street. Or am I missing something?
I think I will stick with the G3+IR extender (Unifi solution) as its compact but definitly increases the night vision capability. For my future camera's its definitly worth looking into.
I purchased the G3 and G4 pro last year . Haven’t installed yet ,but I’m getting concerned when I see a lot reviews on Amazon that claim theres fogging issues with the G4

Hi Chris, do you know if there is improvement when setting bitrate to maximum? 6000kbps is the maximum? Because 1440p stream at same bitrate of 1080p stream will lead to over compression or something, I guess... Maybe a fair comparison will be with bitrate proportional to the pixel count: 2MP@6000kbps = 4MP@12000kbps, am I right?
Hi Chris do you know how well those cameras works in cold weather? Here in Finland might be lower than -20 degrees. I'm really interested, but just worried what happens if it's too cold.
For what it’s worth, I’ve had a G3 bullet outside for 5 years on a commercial building with no roof overhang protection and it’s not uncommon we see temps 0 to -10 Fahrenheit in the winter and 110 to 115 Fahrenheit in the summer and have had zero issues with this camera in those conditions. I’m assuming they built in overhead on their outdoor temp ratings.
I bought a half dozen (newer) 802.3af G3 bullets and the IR cut filter failed on nearly all of them. Thankfully most happened under warranty. Interesting that you sold hundreds of the G3 cameras and described them as bulletproof. Cut filter failure happened enough that there are UA-cam videos on how to fix the problem.
This was actually the reason I watched this video, I was hoping to find out whether or not the G3 bullet filter problem had been fixed on the G4 bullet.
I have one installed in a gymnasium on a wall behind a basketball goal and it has been hit twice with a basketball. No issues, other than having to readjust it.

Reason is I am a HAM-radio operator and want to 'monitor' my 12mtr + tower with a G3 bullet. IR illumination is required then. (for the users out there: IR wavelength should be around 850nm)
Good review as always :) I recently switched from USG to UDM Pro and also from Video to Protect. However I was so disappointed with the motion detection algorithm and general lack of features that I had to factory reset all my G3’s and Flex and bring back my NVR 🤨 I really hope they improve that range of products significantly or I will have to go back to HIKVision (prices have dropped a lot) once the NVR is forced into EOL.
Could you please setup a link in your links for the injector for use with the Ubiquiti Bullet G4 Camera. Amazing video work with the overlays showing the different field of view. You said you use to deploy Unifi Video, does that mean you don't sell Protect to your customers? If so what surveillance system are you using?
Have you tried using these with the UDM -pro and CKG2 or just the NVR? how was the performance on the others? I currently have 2 G4 Pros and 3 G3 Pros on my UDM-pro and the video playback is all grainy and laggy. Nothing like the quality your getting. Wondering if the NVR just does Protect better.
Thanks for the overview and review! You mention that the mounts look the same, but can I use the G3 Bullet mount for a G4 Bullet? I have a bunch of these mounts already screwed into concrete and would be a lot easier just to swap the camera itself.
Hi Chris, i have read in amazon that IR illuminator has to have same wavelength with our ubiquiti. Is that correct? Is the correct wavelength would be 850nm? Thanks
Would you consider the Unifi NVR or UDM-Pro for a first time buyer? Especially if one has Unifi APs with a USG and Cloud Key1. They are similar in pricing in Canada with the Pro being about ~$100 more.
Hi Chris. Thank you. A great video that has got me thinking about my own setup which I am starting from nothing. I dont suppose you have a video coming up on the the UniFi Switch Flex Utility? Thanks
Thanks Chris! I purchased the IR illuminator using your link. Looking forward to trying it out. Is the mounting hardware the same for all 3 cameras: G3, G4 and G4 PRO ? Let's say I mount the G4 and want to swap out the camera body later with the G4 PRO. Can I do that without removing the camera mount secured to the wall? Same size?
G3 Bullet and G4 Bullet cameras have the same mounting hardware. The G4 Pro is a bit bigger, but basically the same - you'd have to drill different holes for the Pro.
@@CrosstalkSolutions And by "the same" you mean that they are identical in size? So it would be possible to replace a G3 bullet with the G4 bullet without swapping the mount? It was a bit unclear in the video whether this would be possible or not... :-)
Hello Chris, great video as usual:) Just one thing. Would you mind to compare the G3 bullet nad G4 bullet with external IR illuminator? I've seen the previous video, where you talk about the external IR in you old house, but the view from the cameras on this video is much better than the forrest before. The comparison of night vision was the best part of this video, however, I'd like to see the comparison of G3/G4 with external IR. Have a great day! (P.S.: Do you have kids or you bought the tesla for yourselves? :D)
Hi, great comparison! I have a question, does unifi protect requires active internet connection for the cameras to work and send notifications to your phone when at home. Not asking about when outside, just when your on the LAN and the ISP internet is dead, what happens to the ability to view them on phone and get notified on events ? Same question about their video doorbell.
do you know if the mount for the G3 will work with the G4? Can I just unscrew the nut that screws into the back of the G3 camera head and screw it onto the G4? Would love to upgrade but don't want to redo all the mounts.
Thanks for the video. Any chance to get a review for a real life scenario? We had a car broken into. Our camera saw it, but could not read the license plate of the car, nor could it see the face. Is it possible to grab a frame from those feeds and zoom in to try to get the face or plate number (or equivalent to hide your plate)? The 4k may be able to have a picture good enough to give to police. That may make it worth the extra $200.
Chris - I've been thinking about one of the setting changes you made. You have the camera setup for continuous recording yet you modified motion detection settings. Why would you do that? If the camera is recording continuously wouldn't those settings be ignored?
***Do you know if UniFi will come out with Person Detection? I spent a lot of money on these cameras and motion detection is nearly worthless as spider webs set them off each night, making them somewhat worthless (in terms of motion detection). Thanks!!
Replaced a Nest doorbell with the G4 Doorbell only to find out it is also missing person detection. You know...the only thing you really need it to do...it doesn't do it. That was missed in the G4 doorbell review.
So, having had my lawnmower stolen from my property this morning at 3:43. which was nicely captured on the under-eave G3 Flexes (video now with police so hopefully those two thieves will soon be loosing their hands, hmm no wait, we are no longer allowed to do that :( ). BUT I was not happy with resolution of the faces captured, I think I will be upgrading to the G4 Bullet in the next couple of days, but will have to find one of those external illuminators since the resolution pop was so significant compared to the onboard.
I know this is a old video, I have a question. Using a Remote AC-Pro access point, how many camera's can connect to the UDM-Pro with out network traffic congestion? I have 3 places I can not get wire too. As such I am planning on 3 remote AC-Pro's connected to my AC-Pro which is wired to my switch. The follow up question. How many devices can be powered by a single injector?
Does the G4 Bullet still support RSTP? Although I probably would be able to get the RSTP feed from Protect anyway. I'm looking at using it to feed a computer vision server to detect humans or dogs (hopefully coyotes) in my yard rather than just motion.
Hey Chris, I use the G3 bullets with the UniFi IR Range Extender, is the G4 bullet compatible with them? It would also be nice to see if the G4 will mount onto the G3 fittings, so I dont have to remove the actual mount when it comes to swaping out the G3s for G4s. Thanks
Typical. Interestingly for the G4 IR extender it says it’s ‘Compatible with UniFi Video Camera G3, model UVC-G3’ Costs the same as the G3 IR extender also. Chris is this something you would be willing to test please?
It'd probably be outside the scope of this channel, but i'd like to see a comparison for the g4 pro vs the cheap chinese "4k" cams and if they actually are any good. Sometimes you can find 4K cams for less than a 100 USD. And they also support RTSP so you could hook them up to a NVR like Synology or other applications like that.
With any of these cameras, can you adjust the shutter speed in order to capture license plates during the day? If you can make adjustments to the shutter speed can it be automated?

Hey Chris, I use the G3 bullets with the UniFi IR Range Extender, is the G4 bullet compatible with them?
It would also be nice to see if the G4 will mount onto the G3 fittings, so I dont have to remove the actual mount when it comes to swaping out the G3s for G4s.
Thanks
Yes - I *believe* that the G3 IR extender is compatible, but I didn't specifically test that.
@@CrosstalkSolutions It is not compatible - there is a new one in the UI store.
Typical. Interestingly for the G4 IR extender it says it’s ‘Compatible with UniFi Video Camera G3, model UVC-G3’
Costs the same as the G3 IR extender also.
Hint: the specs are generally fake
With any of these cameras, can you adjust the shutter speed in order to capture license plates during the day? If you can make adjustments to the shutter speed can it be automated?
I like your videos, but have you seen problems with the IR LEDS. The IR LEDs do not turn on on the G4 Bullet
As you can see in the video, IR does turn on on the G4 Bullet.
