I know mice aren't ideal, but I love that the new house is giving you lots of new content! Especially loving it since I really need the mice-proofing right now. Just bought the spray foam and traps using your links. I've already been using some steel wool but now I need to take my screwdriver and start stabbing under my freeze board. They're cute, but not cute enough to keep living in my house considering they're so nasty. Be gone, demons! 😆
Living out in the woods, with 2 sheds, I've become a bit of an amateur exterminator. I like using a small pocket mirror to check around the bottom of the siding - makes it easy to find the gaps. I've also found that the best traps are the classic snap traps baited with peanut butter. I like the ones with the flat, yellow, plastic trigger, not the metal one. Those seem more sensitive, and you can even adjust the sensitivity. You can also put a nice glob of PB on it, which makes it harder for them to get all of it without it tripping. PB works better than cheese or anything else (probably due to the smell), and it's easy to apply. Only downside is outdoor traps on the ground need to be checked, because ants/bugs will eat the PB over time.
It is advisable to use gloves and N99 respirator, since mice can spread Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, Leptospirosis, Salmonellosis, Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis (LCMV), Rat-Bite Fever, Tularemia, Murine Typhus (fleas).
When I was a kid my mom commented that the house we had moved in to was the first "mouse proof/free" home she'd ever had. Made me very aware of things to look for when I was looking to buy a home myself. My biggest mouse problem was having them climb up into the engine bay of my car during really cold weather in order to get warm, and then dying there. When things finally started to thaw I'd be hanging my head out the rolled down windows screaming "What is that stink?!"
Mice do not like the smell of vinegar. Cleaning trails with vinegar works well. Outside corners of concrete are easy to climb so also inspect them for trails. Adding a right angle turn to cracks works well, like when you added the door stop. Nice video on a dirt topic, thanks!
Also FYI for people seeing poop, see if it has a pointed end. If it doesn’t, then it’s not from mice, but from some insects. There are a few insects that have poop similar to mice poop.
I saw one running from a bush to an arbor with vines in the early morning. I am going to put a couple of traps outside, need good locations since I have dogs and babysit my 2 year old granddaughter. A few years back I had an open bag of grass seed and they must have had a grand time eating that, the shed was a mess. Hubs sealed up all the cracks with expanding foam and they haven’t returned, need to look for new cracks. I used to have a medium sized dog, Xena. I called her my natural born killer. Anything that entered the yard was dead meat. She didn’t maul things, just snapped their necks. Mice, squirrels, a skunk and a cat. She could climb our one tree in the back yard. I never had to worry about critters then. Thank you for this video. I’m in Denver, the days are hot but the nights are chilly and they are probably plotting to get in my house.😘 Heard about you from Midwest Magic.
Years ago, we discovered mice in our garage, the washer and dryer were in the garage. My ex blew it off as no big deal. I told him, "Oh, no big deal? Then you won't mind taking over the laundry for the next how ever long they live there. That works!" Next thing I know he's out there with traps, and everything needed to get rid of them because oh heavens no, you can't take away from his couch sloth time! LOL! A little hint, find their food source, ours turned out to be the bagged dog food which we moved outside and into a secure container. When we found the nest it was packed full of kibble, easy food source for critters...
Thanks for sharing. I would've screwed that piece of metal to the wood at the bottom of the door and then fastened it to the door; add any kind of steel wool with glue or caulking to the holes where they're entering. The glue will keep them from moving it. Using steel wool and peppermint oil mixed with water in a spray bottle on a weekly basis, will keep them out. Once they're gone the area should be cleaned with some type of citrus cleaner.
Peppermint spray really works. I live in a 110 year old house with more points of ingress than I can count. My first year here we saw many mice, but after some spray and the cat getting a hold of a few of them, we dropped them outside and haven't seen them since (aside from one instant where our old neighbors started consistently overfilling their garbage can for over a month. Daily peppermint sprays around the house for a week and they disappeared
Signs of a moose infestation are easier to spot, what with the half-ton split-hoofed 'roid-deer with a sarcastic expression and the personality of a runaway wood-chipper standing in your kitchen and eating all of your cereal.
filing this under "info i'll keep in my mind but desperately hope i will not need" lol (also catch me googling how to encourage snakes and literally any predatory species to my area)
I have a chipmunk condo in the basement of a room addition between the floor joists and styro sheet insulation the previous owners installed as a ceiling. When the roofers replaced my old shingles with a metal roof they left a section of soffit off on a corner intersecting over the original part of the house that I can't reach and the gaping hole is letting anything and everything into the house. They are using the area under the ridge cap as an expressway. I can hear them cavorting and chewing on their nuts 24/7.
for holes in walls where wires are run, use twisted iron sponge on both ends - you tape it around the wire and mice won't be able to get in or burrow into the wire

Not your normal style video but great information. Their little "f'n" feet - ha ha ha. Love the out takes.

Oh THAT is the worst!
🙌 thanks for added tips!I’ve been sealing up my house I just bought, been blowing chili powder on the we spray foam before it cures.
So helpful, thank you. I noticed a crack near my sink and lots of droppings! Mortified!

My dad had taught me about the steel wool method and it works for little holes

Gerbils poop the final product that are symmetrical without the point. Just for everybody interested : -)
I befriended a mom and daughter barn cats, haven’t seen mice since they came around.
Right on. I was going to say get a barn cat if you have the space.
I concur. Chipmunks, mice, voles… I have no more rodents in my house, garage, or yard!
Even the odour of the cat and cat hair usually helps with rodents :-)

Xcluder Rodent Control Fill Fabric is a higher grade steel wool - I believe it has little shards of sharp metal in it to discourage chewing.

Use a blacklight flashlight to see the trails marked with mouse urine.

👏👏👏Thank you!
No 🐭 in your 🏡. Thanks for the video. 👍😊
The Fixer 👍
thanks for the video!!!!
I use copper wool instead of steel, it won't rust like steel.
Oh good idea!
Steel wool is good, but I was told that mice hate chewing on copper. So, use copper wool. It exists.

I subscribe to Midwest magic cleaning and he suggested You to everyone 😊. I had already subscribed to you long ago but told him thanks .
Yes! I saw he gave me a shout out. Made me happy!
For the trim around the house, how would you recommend sealing it? Sprayfoam or a shim?
peppermint oil
You could just have them pay rent. 🤣
Greetings from Magic Mack :)
What are you going to seal that radon remediation pipe with?
Really Matt, they look like sprinkles haha
licorice flavor sprinkles
Mack sent me here.
Where can i get those traps...Amazon?what is the name of the trap?
Hey! They are "press n set" from tomcat. Link in the description of this video! Thanks for watching! 👍
Bird feeders are a siren call to mice.
Whatever you do, don't get a black and white cat named Sylvester....
😂
I would like to know where my flying roaches are coming from?
Fun fact, they can smell their friends for 10 miles
I had friends like that in college 🤣
@TheFixerHomeRepair 😂👍 love your content. I've learned a lot from you. Thanks so much for sharing your work!
Thank YOU for watching!

Get a CAT
Pro tip: get a snake.

nailed it!
