    To beef it up for a 9th grader, you could add in a couple of Plutarch's Lives (Anne White has guides on them. She abridged them slightly while keeping the original language, added vocabulary lists and background information, and provides narration prompts that you could use for essay ideas), Shakespeare's Julius Caesar (Arkangel has really good dramatized audio versions--follow along in the book while listening), and GA Henry books. He has quite a few set in ancient times. Or Roger Lancelyn Greene's "Tales of Ancient Egypt". You'd also want to add in writing and/or research prompts, timeline, and mapwork. For the timeline, you could do a Charlotte Mason-style "book of centuries" (lots of videos on that on UA-cam!). Hope this helps...

      I have continued to use SOTW and we are on our second rotation of it. I found free lap books which we have utilized and I added read-alouds that go along with it. CHeck out this video for how we made adjustments for older children. ua-cam.com/video/_p4OXq8WdhM/v-deo.htmlsi=6uU3HGIzPxHFqj2R

    Hi, thank you for your review! I am torn between this curriculum and Book Shark. You quickly mentioned in your video you were also thinking of Book Shark. Did you ever move on to Book Shark? Looking for some insight on your preference if you did.

    • @OneMamaToAnother
      @OneMamaToAnother  3 роки тому +1

      No, I didn't end up switching. Instead, I just made a read aloud and independant reading list to go along with SOTW. If you see my reviews of Vol.2 & 3 I share the lists there.

    Thank you for this review - I'm about to purchase this for my 7 yr old (2nd Grade), but I wanted to see it first. This was very helpful! Question...are the extra "suggested" books children's books? It would be great if they're easy for a 7 yr old to understand. I think I will take your advice and take it slow, and get some of the suggested books out of the library if they're for kids, not textbooks or complicated books. Thanks.

    • @OneMamaToAnother

      They list is very good at providing details about what ages they would recommend it for and whether it is more of an independent read or a read aloud. I found the majority were perfect for my children's ages.

    HI, in your honest opinon would this be too easy for a 9th grader? I am homeschooling for the first time and my daughter doesn't really care for "textbook" history, i'm trying to do something different but that will challenge her just a bit. I like the binder book thingy, it seems very helpful. I'm thinking and hoping that I can make it work. Also, is this very heavy on the Bibilical aspect or is it a nice balance between biblical and secular. Thank you so much!!!

    • @OneMamaToAnother
      @OneMamaToAnother  4 роки тому

      I think you would need to add to it for a 9th grader but it could be used. I don't find it very Biblical based at all.

    This may sound bad, but how biblical is this text?

    • @OneMamaToAnother

      That's a hard question to answer because it's pretty subjective. This volume definitely has the most of the 4 but it's not overwhelming.

    • @DebbieBratton

      Take it to your local office supply store (Office Depot, Office Max, Staples, etc.). They can cut the spine off for you. Or purchase your own guillotine cutter, which would be worth the investment if you find yourself removing spines every school year. I found a guillotine cutter on Amazon that cuts up to 400 pages at a time.

    • @OneMamaToAnother

      You would have to compare what you are looking for in terms of supporting the disability with the material.

      Yes it is. I have a couple children who are developmentally delayed and processing disorder and they like to color the activity pages and listen to the interesting stories. It’s nice because you can do more or less depending on what they can handle that day.

    Isn't it boring for kids? Lacking pictures and too much text

    • @OneMamaToAnother
      @OneMamaToAnother  4 роки тому +3

      Quite the opposite. It's in a story form so it's engaging and fairly short. Younger children have the colouring pages, additional books and projects and we use lap books. We add in games, read and documentaries as well. Check out my review of vol.2 and vol.3 to see more options.
