Just a thought - I have an audio spectrum app on my smartphone (several of those audio apps are free - have one called "Sonic Tools") - anyway, I used that to measure the frequency response of my speaker - the white noise has a definite peak around 670 Hz, so I adjusted my cw offset to match. This way you can also take advantage of the speaker response to further reduce the unwanted noise. If you are zero-beat to the station, it should be quite near the peak audio response of the speaker. Of course, sometimes using the RIT to change the tone to suit your hearing often yields good results. I'm a big fan of CW filters - I wish all radios came with them (of course I'm a cw op!). Fun video! / de N0DET
I have the KAF2 filter on my K2 - would using something like the AF1 AUDIO FREQUENCY FILTER kit in addition to what is already in the radio on a K1 or K2 be helpful for reception or would it be redundant or useless and/or cause distortion?
Good catch. The K1 is in need of dial calibration, so it is only close to being correct. The good news is that it is simple to do from the front panel menus. Cheers!
@@tyrueiI No problem - I have another question - just wondering. I'm looking for a K1 to buy - what is a good price for a used working 4-band K1? Is it better than a 4 band KX1 or are they about the same? I'm turning into an Elecraft collector. 🙂
Hey Bruce, it’s me Alvaro KF0LZM again, I have a question for you. When you key using the Ft897, do you experience a click in the receive after you unkey using cw? I am experiencing a problem like this and was wondering if you have encountered it.

I still think the K1 is better and yes the Mechanical filter helps but I think the Elecraft’s filters are better.
Pretty surprising actually, but the K1’s filters and sensitivity are both well designed. I’ll add a comment with my filter settings in a day or so.

How tight is the filter on the k1? I have an old Kenwood hybrid with a 300hz filter and it does very well.
Are you on different frequencies? The 897 is on 20.0 basically and the elecraft is on 20.4

The click worsens when using the 300hz filter
Hi Alvaro,
I’ll put the FT897 on the bench and show you what I get. I hope I can get the audio to let you hear how mine sounds. 73, Bruce
