    Door is a must, i would do a multiple pane window door, lights up and down staircase, and you always have space to add shower stall down the road with that much space in bathroom area

    As you plan the mechanicals, consider using an air-to-water heat pump, for heating, hot water, and cooling (with separate hydronic air handlers). This is the ultimate for energy efficiency, consistent with your growing interest in building science.

    One more thing.... that room upstairs would be perfect for a theater. Ultra short throw projector with 120-inch retracting screen. All that rock wool and air sealing means that sub-woofer could be cranked to 11. Lol

    Kyle, it's a missed opportunity to not put in a shower while it's an open, blank slate.
    I think it would add so much extra value to your building for very little cost. Imagine getting all dirty working on something, then being able to clean up at your headquarters and not track a mess into your home!

      I believe he talked about this in the beginning, with the way building code is structured in the zone his property is on, he had a lot of rules of things he couldn't build, including building height restriction and the inability to build a shower.

      @matty946 Місяць тому +2

    Gotta agree on the shower.... I get that your house is right behind you, but on the occasional need for it (really dirty and not tracking into home), it would be useful. Also, if there were some kind of chemical accident diesel/paint thinner/acetone/ etc spilled on you, it's right there. Needed, no, but nice to have. I've never needed to use the showers in my classroom (science), but I am glad they are there, just in case.

    When you install the tapcons do you have the floor heat tubes located so you don’t drill into them or are the tapcons short enough where that will not be an issue? 🤔

    • @95dodgev10
      @95dodgev10 Місяць тому +1

      My memory is a little fuzzy but I believe he made sure the tubes were plenty deep enough that tap cons wouldn't hit. He regularly tap cons walls to concrete so I'm sure the needs and details of that were one of his priorities in the design.

      @@95dodgev10 as a flooring installer i have had contractors tell me it was OK to drive 5/8" concrete nails (and 1/4" of that is the wood strip) into radiant heat floors, several times i have put holes in their tubes.... and they always thought i should pay for it even after they told me to go ahead. i have even hit a water main in the middle of a house basement that was just under the surface. i learned to never trust anyone and always add a day to radiant heat floor jobs so i can glue the tackstrip down.

    It could be so rude if you install a system like the Bosch Compress 7000i something primary heating source.
    and then it could have been fun if up in your man cave you had installed a floor from NOVOPAN Spaandex Floor chipboard or similar.
    and I still believe that there should have been insulation between the workshop and the man cave with a foot of insulation.
    But all this It's just dreams. I read an article somewhere that energy had increased less in Denmark and due to inflation than other European countries because in the 70s they started making demands for the insulation of houses and buildings..

    I assume you will be doing a dropped ceiling in the restroom to accommodate the branch circuits from your breaker box since it is below the landing of your mezzanine. As to who makes the call for the location of your gaming system? As a certain late night TV host often ends such statements, "... a sexist would say". ;) Seriously, though, a great build with great commentary so others can also have great builds.

    I know this man playing apex, but seriously if you are going to have internet out there I recommend the unifi system. You can use a bridge from your house to beam connection to your shop and then put a mesh system up.
    Also recommend a media server, you can build a server box to store games (computer) that when you connect another system you can point it to that server then play games. You can also run a nice debrid script to have it give you “unlimited” storage for movies and shows also your isp cants see what you download ;)

    Maybe I'm lazy or just a noob, but I would have used a double top plate attaching the top plate to the ceiling, building the wall, then standing it up and sliding it in into place. Wall could have been lifted between the I joists and moved into place. Plastic shims on the floor would take care of the minor variation on the floor. I also would have cut the side of the bottom plate and slid it in. They need stud shoes anyway, don't they? Of course, I'm no pro, and maybe my ideas aren't really ideal.....

    Also, with the mechanical room below the stairs, you would get radiant heat through the stairs into your air conditioned space. Anyway, that's how I see it, I may be wrong :D
