Spot on! Wrongly most people fear dry cold more than sweat and dress to heavy. I see it all the time. I hike in polyester T-shirt 3-season and use windbreaker only if I can't retain heat 30 minutes into a leg. When hiking in rain you always get wet, either from outside or inside. When dressing light at least there is less to dry afterwards.

When you are on the move, any sort of waterproof is counterproductive, because waterproofs don’t breath fast enough to counter your own perspiration. Sure the rain isn’t getting to you, but you’ll still be wet from sweat. Just tough it out and dry up later.
The goretex obsession in the ‘outdoor’ community is mostly from people who go out for less than 24 hours, or as you say: ‘people going to the supermarket for a meal’.

If i have a waterproof liner over anything. Gloves, boots, cloathing. I sweat nonstop and after a long day even not hiking ill be wet with persperation. So right with you there... I love the UK windproof cloathing w/out liner. Great extreme cold weather outer shell, big and tough to wear over wool and keep wind out.

I've worked as a alpine climbing guide and have used different gear through the decades.
There are several concepts on how to use modern gear.
Goretex is water resistant it is not waterproof.
On a mountain like Mt. Rainier which is close to the Pacific Ocean you can have large amounts of rain and snow.
More than Goretex can handle, it will eventually soak through.
Waterproof coated rain gear or ponchos are the best if you have to spend day after day for extended weeks out in the field.
Yes you will have to take time to dry out as best you can, a small dome tent with a lantern will accomplish this.
Synthetic insulated materials that dry from body heat are best, because they absorb very little moisture.
The Scottish concept is to wear thin nylon shell that will only repel wind yet allows you to push moisture out of the insulated layers should they become wet.
This is the concept behind the ECW gear many of the modern armys are using.
Experience will teach you how to stay comfortably warm layering your insulated layers of under garments.

If synthetic materials repel moisture then how can they push it out? That’s a contradiction. If I wear wool I may get a bit damp but I’ll still be warm and body heat dries that too. In monsoon climate thin cotton is best for cool and quick drying.

@@solb101 Your body heat will dry it much faster than wool.
When you have washed polyester clothes you've probably noticed the clothes had very little moisture after the spin cycle.

@@tomhickman1006 I’m not sure about that but when I hand wash my polyester running shirt it feels just as wet as everything else. But more important is the fact that I stay warmer when wet in wool than I do in synthetic clothing and I sweat less and don’t overheat.

I work in coastal area, weather changes constantly. Usually carry day pack w extra dry shirt(s) & extra warmth. Recent goretex ( MVP) purchases taught me about layering and breathability . Thankfully shelter is near to dry out or change Into dry clothes. Especially in Rain •Avoid hypothermia, be prepared

.... i always prefer a regular windproof smock,

This smock MTP with MVP liner is good for solder, working in cold rain, standing in rain.
For hiking and mountaineering I wear a t-shirt or funktional Duranova/breathable synthetic shirt - not cotton ... outside goretex jacket only against ice cold rain and strong wind in the mountains, when resting or really standing in an wet shirt in icy wind...
The shirt is allways wet while walking fast most of the time :-)

Ya goretex sucks in actual rain. It is only good when it is about -7 Celsius or colder. In those cases it's awesome as it breathes better the colder it gets outside and blocks 100% of the wind allowing much thinner and more effective insulation layers without all the bulk. It allows you to stay relatively little bulk to about -20 Celsius.
It's funny goretex is only awesome for the exact opposite of what it is advertised for lol.
In actual rain just wear a poncho that 0.01% of the time and wear a cotton smock the other 99.99% and be comfortable

At one point I was about to make a video how goretex is mostly a scam - if we are just talking about the goretex part. So, basically, goretex lets vapour out but it requires that the outer surface is not wet. If it is dry, then the vapour get out easy. But if it's dry, you don't need the membrane. If the surface is wet, then the vapour cannot get out. So, at that point, could just as well wear a regular rain coat. So, what matters is the water repellency of the outer material and that is usually gone after couple of hours of heavy rain. How I see it with goretex, you can choose - do you want to be wet from the rain or from the sweat if you are hiking or working.
