Don't play any more, but when I did I use to wear my beloved para smock. It was my Dads issued one and had been all over the world with him, which he gave to me when I was in Cadets. Certainly made all my instructor's jealous, and was a lot warmer then the c95 smock.

RADAR REDCAR marketed their DPM smock as an SAS Smock, they also did an artic version and a SBS and Mountain version at one point. They also did somthing that had masses of pockets which was called the Sniper smock IIRC. Oh and they often did BLACK versions

As I understand it a smock was an over the head overgarment worn by agricultural workers being issued to troops to protect uniforms on long sea voyages in the 19th century that ended up being dyed khaki, slit down the front with buttons or ties sewn on and worn as early camouflage in India.

The arm pocket on the 68 smocks was for the First Field Dressing, sort of giant tampon thing with a bandage attached.

When I joined up as a boy soldier in 72 we got the plain green two pocket work/fatigue jacket, plus DPM 68 patterns, they were very well made and ironed to a drill pigs delight. They were OK but not great for field soldiering, most got exceeding tailored so we looks Puka for the local girls :) but heavy as hell when soggy.. The 80s stuff was obviously made to the cheapest tender and was considerred water soluable, many lads got quite upset when they tried to take our 68s off us. The 90 pattern smock was far more useful, practical, very well made, a looser cut than the 68 pattern allowing for better flexibility and cargo carrying whilst retaining some style :) . The Soldier 95 abandoned all efforts at "style" or barrack dress chique but was bloody well made from a fabric good choice, pockets etc were well sown together. Its a PROPER combat smock SYSTEM designed with 100% utility in mind, but generally looked like a sack on the squaddie. And it did not blouse nicely as preferred by many regiments. Being Poseurs as well as squaddies we usually sewed down the upper chest pocket bellows , even occasionally doing to bottom pockets as well.
Hated wearing DPM pants, often went with either Barrack dress trs in camp or Green lightweights with sewn in creases.
I still wear my 90 pattern today but I would love to get a 95 pattern loose cut smock in xxl, none to be had. BTW RESPECTS for not wearing berets and kit you did not earn.
    Cede Nullis.

Re the para smock, those seen worn on Bloody Sunday (and in use in the Para Reg until the mid-1970s) were NOT very light versions of the DPM para smock. They were 1959 Pattern Denison smocks, similar to late WW2 full-zip Denisons but with a noticeably yellow base colour.

  • @Steve_281

Yes lads!!! Good stuff again. I still have a smock in the plastic bag I picked it up in from slops. Hated them. Too heavy, wouldn't dry and the best bit about them - the fleece-lined pockets, we're of no use because we'd get press-ups if we used them! Gadge is spot on about hoods; nobody wore/wears them, and to stow them we always took our lead from Royal, and rolled them inwards, using the wire to keep it in a nice, tight roll.

great video, brought back some memories of my old kit and my old mans. I had 2 favourite smocks when I served (been out nearly a decade). MTP version of the 'SAS' Arctic Windproof and an MVP lined version of the MTP smock you showed at the end. There were so many variants of the DPM S95 smock, I think the ripstop was the worst, but the version before the one showed (late model with velcro) had a stupid little pocket on the arm that no one knew what it was for. '85 pattern was good for one thing - camp. It was a doddle to iron and thus good for parades and guard mount, other than that fell apart with a strong wind. Most troops I knew, cut off the wire on the hoods and they tend to leave them flat on their backs when worn now rather than rolling up.

One smock that you didn't mention was the DPM sniper smock. Extremely rare, only issued to snipers. My Battalion only ever had 6 at any one time and if one went missing there was hell to pay. A general description is similar in design to a para smock but covered in nylon loops to stuff foliage through, padded elbows and a strange hook gadget on the upper arm. Snipers in my Battalion never used them and the only time you ever saw them was on KAPE tours and open day show and tell stands.

I used to have a sniper smock. never used it, really heavy and cumbersome and quite specialist so didnt really think many people would want us to mention it... the hooks are so you can drag a rifle on them by its sling or in a drag bag when crawling. As you say hardly anyone used them , the battalion snipers tended to make their own ghillies using other smocks as a base

    • @billmasen3923
      @billmasen3923 16 годин тому

Radar in Redcar and I think SASS bother made a sniper version with more pockets and tabs for foliage. I think (not sure) the extra pockets were for ammo clips or mags for sniping rifles and were mounted on the lower back, so the shooter could retrieve ammo from his smock without having to roll over when in the prone position.

Good video. I've got a 1980s windproof smock which I bought from a company called SASS (I think) back in the late 80's or early 90's. Can just about read the label inside which says '(SAS) Windproof smock'. I remember RADAR being one of the other companies doing them.

I'm an American collector of British Army Smocks. I like my lovely used and faded ripstop 95 with button hood. It even has the shadow on the right shoulder of SAS wings. I also have a newer DPM wire hood it's a bit heavier. I like the wire hood because you can shape it. It had a name tape above the right pocket I'm assuming it once said "parachute rgmt"?

SAS private purchase " Kabrit Smock " in the 80s from Survival Aids in London in a breathable fabric that was waterproof when wet . I believe cost £150 if memory serves me well . Came complete with Canadian buttons . Tailored (modified ) issue kit with Canadian buttons from a specialist button premises at the top of Portland St . London . Issue crap hat . German Para issue black boots with welted oil acid proof sole and integral tongue for water resistance ,drainage and quick drying .
Later MTP included ideas that featured in earlier private purchase smocks . Mesh inner pockets are for drying socks or slow thawing of snow for drinking water while on the move . In cold weather the external zips negate the problem of completely unzipping the front of the smock and exposure to chill to place your pouch of snow or socks inside . Dry feet and water are essential to maintain combat effectiveness regardless of conditions as it is as important to stay hydrated in cold conditions as hot , possibly more so as the brain does not recognise dehydration in winter as readily as in warmer conditions due to reduced blood flow to the extremities . All are very practical features if used as designed . A lesson learned in the South Atlantic as far as UKSF are concerned .

great video . some helpful info, to determine the material the labels usually state "wash as synthetic" or "wash as cotton", or "50% cotton 50% polyester."
after much perseverance I found a 2nd hand 'windproof smock', was pleasantly surprised to find it was actually new; badges (now removed) were 16th signals regt. - serial # suggests manufactured in april 1991, only a few months older than myself blimey!
I longed for a W.S. for its gabardine material, of which was phased out in the mid 90s for under poly-cotton blend. The pockets are somewhat cumbersome though and would benefit from popper buttons...

Kit I use when it’s a bit more fresh outside is a CS95 non hooded issue rip stop material smock or a helikon windproof/waterproof lightweight jacket in MTP/MC .

The flap you buttoned in was for parachuting so the smock didn't ride up when jumping, we called them jump smocks back in early 80s. We also had a Canadian jump smock in a lighter shade of British DPM, which also had the flap and had snaps to secure it. The smock was only issued to members of the Special Service Force which I think was a brigade that included the (now disbanded) Canadian Airborne Regiment. It was pretty lightweight, sometimes worn in the field but also worn as a garrison uniform. It was replaced by a horrible woodland style camo and a fugly style of jacket, all before Cadpat was developed.

    Just came across this vid.
Great vid. I have a few of these.

Do you have one like that?

Para smocks arent easy to come by, really need to watch ebay for a genuine issue. I got a brand new one that was a size too big. Then managed to get one that fit me about a month or so later. All that was wrong with it was a faulty zip, so was an absolute steal for such an easy fix. I stand by my mtp para smock, its become my everyday jacket.

@@AnvilAirsoftTV I completely understand what you say about it being a badge if honour, like the maroon beret. For me personally, ive never had any experience where a service member or ex service member has felt mocked about it, if anything its sparked more conversations about our time serving. As for a beret, it really depends, if im doing an impression kit id wear a maroon or green beret, but under no circumstance will i attach a cap badge. I would however wear a navy beret with my old cap badge. But its all down to personal preference for the individual.
