  • When Eric Marienthal only gets one short solo in the Buddy Rich Big Band, for the memorial concert feat. Steve Gadd, he goes all in! Even Steve Marcus is impressed while he goes up into the altissimo like a bad cat! The tune is called "Keep The Customer Satisfied".

Yo guys, let's be honest, Alto I or Alto II even get usually less solo's combined than Tenor 2. So I wouldn't even argue over Alto I vs II 😂 those tenor dudes absorb 80% and the alto's get the left overs.
By the way, Eric played the second chair during that whole concert, here he is actually playing from the Alto I part, so they must have changed parts so Eric had at least a solo.

Eric is truly an amazing human. He visited my college and my professor got me an hour lesson with him. We traded 4's and talked about numerous things, but the biggest take away was this. I asked what do you think about and play when you improvise. Do you have a set of 10 licks you have ready in you arsenal to play or what? He humbly said it is about none of that. His only focus is rhythm. He then demonstrated playing over a blues backing track on one note for a chorus and playing it super funky with space and rhythmic precision. Common sense but exploded the pandora box of confusion for me and made me a better player in seconds!

Always loved this epic Gadd shuffle, there is really nobody who shuffles like him! It's a young Eric Marienthal subbing on second alto in the Buddy Rich Big Band, on the memorial night where his big band played with all the young talents at the time in 1989. I know a lot of the tunes from that concert, and I think this might be that one tune where Eric got to play lead alto and this solo. He sounds the most agitated that I know from him (and I know a lot of his work), perhaps he was a bit nervous for this one short solo. But boy, did he nail that! Steve Marcus (tenor player at the left) his expression at 0:37 is priceless!
If you want to dig deeper, I've just released a online course on getting to the essentials to what makes a Pro Saxophone sound. I've transcribed so many different artists over the years, and you really can see what they all have in common and what makes it sound so good. If that sounds interesting, you can already just preview what the main categories are that get covered here: www.sharpelevenmusic.com/saxophone-fundamentals-how-to-sound-like-a-pro
There are very concrete exercises included, as well as pdf's with exercises which in most cases combine a few different parameters (like phrasing + sound + scales). Hope you dig,

I think Eric Marienthal has definitely matured over time. With Gordon Goodwin, and in performances with other musicians such as Chic Corea, etc., his solos are incredibly technical but also incredibly musical. That is why he is my favorite saxophone player today. Everybody when they are young likes to show off the technical side of their playing, but Marienthal really figured out how to make it musical as he matured, which is why he is so amazing.

Eric is the man. I got to see him with Chick and The Electric Band at Tipitinas in the 80s. What a band they were. Chemistry was off the charts with those cats.🎭🍌🎷

I completely missed the sax solo, as I was too busy listening to Gadd shuffling away so cooly, as usual. I hadn't realised Mick Hucknall played sax, too. I'm glad he didn't play 😂
