Clothes Wringer Restoration - Water Damage Restoration

  • In this video, I restore an antique clothes wringer made by Anchor Brand in the US in 1898.
    More about the restoration:
When I saw this piece for sale on a sales website, I knew from the start that it would be the subject of an exciting restoration video. This Clothes wringer is quite rare; only a few have been preserved due to their size, but also the fact that they are mostly wood, which has been subjected to water contact for many years at a time.
The restoration process went well, with no problems but with great surprises. I didn't expect to find the wood so rotten on the inside. However, I kept all the original elements and restored the water-damaged wood.
I cleaned everything very well and then applied a wood treatment, after which I used a thick coat of wood putty, which I sanded after drying. I also applied a coat of paint for long-lasting protection.
The parts of the wood on which the engraving was still visible were retouched by hand, and the elements on which the engraving had disappeared were re-engraved using the Falcon 2 Laser from Creality.

I worked on this antique clothes wringer with much love and patience over three weeks and am thrilled with how it turned out. It works and is now saved and stored well. It probably ended up in the landfill if I hadn't stepped in.
Please ask me if you have any questions about what I used and why. I answer everyone!
More about the antique Clothes Wringers:
In 1888, Ellen Eglin invented her groundbreaking device, a particular type of clothes-wringer, which was a machine that had two wooden rollers attached to a crank; after being washed and rinsed, wet clothes were fed between these rollers and an immense amount of water was squeezed out. The clothes were then hung to dry, which took significantly less time due to the wringer. Although the design was perceived as a popular product well into the 20th century, Eglin received very little credit or financial success for her invention.
The wringer I restored was made in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA.

The heart-shaped tops on those bolts, that graceful curve on the metal crank handle -- can you imagine a present-day manufacturer investing such elegant design in a workaday product? Or even manufacturing something that is still in decent shape 100+ years later? Lovely job!

Of course I had to look up the item, these Anchor brand clothes wringers came out in 1896. To find something this spectacular from the 19th century that hasn’t rotted away, what a gem.

You have to appreciate how they made things back then. The imprint of the factory and the message on the wood is something I am not sure exist these days with anything but maybe handmade furniture. Its really cool to see to me.

We call them a mangle in the UK instead of a wringer :) My mom got her finger caught in one when she was 5 and it's still kind of flat and noticeably squished over 60 years later, I can't imagine how much that hurt! You did a great job and when you redid all that drawing by hand I was seriously impressed, props to you for that

Hi! Thank you. The lettering wasn't positioned the same because all the lettering/designs were reproduced from a visible subject, wringer from the Internet. On my wringer, I couldn't distinguish what was written anymore. To find the perfect position afterwards from the first shot it is impossible, only if you are 🦸‍♂️ Best, Johnny

What an incredible job of preserving/restoring this piece of history. You are so talented. When we visited the farm, the three of us kids helped Grandma with the laundry. She had a ringer like this that was attached to a big tub on wheels. We would bring it in to the kitchen from the short hallway next to it.
We had a lot of fun scrubbing on the washboard and ringing out the clothes. Then we’d take the full wash baskets out to the clothesline and hang them up. I’m sure Grandma treasured the relief of this household drudgery.

    Very nice work!
Here's a tip: for larger missing wood sections, don't use filler - it has a different density and expanding properties than wood itself. It doesn't matter on small repairs but it accumulates over big lengths. Rather clean out the section with a router and make a wooden insert. For irregular pieces you'll sometimes need to build a jig for your router so the end result is a plane surface that can receive the insert, which then has to be brought into shape with a plane and chisel. The bond between the old piece and the insert will be much more resistant, especially as a preservation method. Would be really nice to see that kind of wood work here! 😊

What was the actual wringer made from? More modern wringers seem to have a cushion surface to them. I think about how this device made laundry chores easier (HA!), It surely beats wringing clothes out by hand or beating them on rocks. Keep up the great work!!
