  • Welcome to Master Bowie's Kitchen! This is a cooking show by 'dog chef', mama and author, Riesa and her Labrador, Bowie. Today we made bone broth using chicken feet and beef bones. Bone broth is the superfood your dog needs. It is full of beneficial nutrients to promote healthy gut, support the immune system, maintain healthy skin and coat, and support joint health. It also provides nutritious hydration especially if your dog is on a kibble diet and can enhance appetite if you have a fussy or senior dog.
    Note: Bone broth can be high in histamines especially when it is cooked for many hours. Cook less hours to reduce histamines or opt in for a quick fish broth or mushrooms broth if you have dogs prone to allergies or have poor gut health. Choose bones from animal proteins that your dog is not allergic to.
    General bone broth dosage guidelines for dogs (daily):
    Small dogs (1/8 cup), medium dogs (1/4 cup), large dogs (1/3 to 1/2 cup), giant breeds (1 to 2 cups)
    Some pet parents give bone broth every day. Our recommendation is to give it every second day or when your dog needs encouragement to eat. You can warm the broth prior to feeding. Store in the fridge for up to a week or freeze.
    Please give it a try! If you make it, please tag us and share it!

    I am so glad I watched this video. My dog had surgeries on both legs when she was about 8 months old. She will be 16 next week. I noticed she couldn’t stand up too long. When she ate she slipped and set on the floor several times (her teeth were all removed so she eats slowly). I added chicken feet gelatin to her homemade meals for more than 1 month now. Her legs are stronger and she enjoyed running more. She no longer slips when she eats.

    I've seem many recipes for bone broth ( I make it for my GSD and 4 cats )....your method is by far the simplest and quickest. Thank you so much for sharing! By the way, I also use a pressure cooker because it cuts the time and it is also, as you say, healthier! Kudos 🐾💚👣

    Thank you for the helpful video Riesa and Bowie. I recently bought your book, Bowie Drools Over the Alphabet, and it's amazing. One of my dogs has food allergies, and also had a pancreatitis episode last month. Your book has us on the right track to creating her new lower fat diet. So far, we're one month out, and she's doing very well eating fresh foods. We're trying a batch of bone broth today, and it looks promising.

    Made this for this first time tonight. Am I able to feed my pup the tender beef parts from beef chuck? Not the bones obviously! Just wasn’t sure if it cooked for too long to be safe for my dog. Thank you!!

      @@masterbowie2016 so it gelled a bit but no quite as much as yours in the video. I think I put too much water. For 3lbs of meat I used 2 and 3/4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. The fat still separated :) thank you again!

    Where can I buy chicken feet? A local feed and grain store sells them dried for dog treats but I don't know where to look for raw ones?

      It depends on the amount of bones you use, if you watch the video, it should be pretty simple ratio to follow 😊

      @@masterbowie2016 thank you so much for responding and I watched the entire video. I’m new to cooking for my 15 lb poodle and was looking for a little more guidance with precise information given that I measure all her meals.

    • @masterbowie2016
      @masterbowie2016  3 місяці тому +1

      @@Msrocotito sure! Basically choose the bones from protein that your dog is not allergic to. If you use apple cider vinegar, add 2 tbsp for every kilo of the bones. Add water just enough to cover the bones (there's no specific measurements for the amount water/bone ratio). You can use slow cooker or pressure cooker. Large dense bones (like beef bones) obviously will take longer to extract than soft bones (like chicken feet). The longer you cook, generally the more gelatinous the broth will be, however the higher histamines it will also be, so just keep that in mind if your dog is prone to allergies. For feeding recommendation, have a look at the video description - I've put bone broth quantities to weights there.

    • @masterbowie2016
      @masterbowie2016  5 місяців тому +2

      Thanks for your feedback. I normally just use the bones once as you would have extracted most of the nutrients anyway. You can however use the bones the second time around for flavouring and yummy hydration for your pups if you'd like 😊 enjoy the broth making and let me know how you go 🩷

    So happy I found this video. Thank you for sharing.
    Question:
    @1:33 in the video mentioned histamine. Slow cooking causes histamines? Usually cook food in the oven or soup pot on cook top for 1 to 2 hours. My dog has severe allergies so I've been trying to find ways to help. Hope I'm not adding to his problems.

    • @masterbowie2016
      @masterbowie2016  Місяць тому

      Thank you for your lovely feedback. To answer your question, slow cooking/roasting for hours and hours increases the histamine levels. Managing allergies needs a holistic approach, ie. remove/reduce the allergens (could be in the diet, environment etc), strengthen the body's immune system and gut health and manage it before inflammation/symptoms occurring through supportive/functional whole foods, herbal and other modalities. Have you considered getting an allergy test? It can help identify the triggers and inform the best plan moving forward to manage it. Hope these help answer your question 😊

      Thank you for this info. As we humans are extracting ourselves from all the processed food our untrustworthy government has been recommending for decades, we've begun to understand what we've allowed to happen to our pets by what we've been feeding them. I've recently been researching canine nutrition, so this video popped up for me. Can't wait to get started nourishing my dog correctly. BTW, I'm so sad that vets can't be trusted to be the best advocates for our pets. I literally can't find a vet within driving distance who doesn't sell dog food. 😖
