Bought my wife a wheel and building her a similar fire pit in our new backyard. She hasn't thrown any pottery in...20yrs??? But she was really good when she did and I am excited to see her express this talent again. Your videos are inspiring for both of us. Thanks!
DANTE, it’s been awhile since class in Sacramento. After school, move, and new job I’m finally getting back into pottery. After half a decade, way too long, I finally have a small studio/kiln setup. I thought I would look at youtube in prep of a pit fire Im going to do... your video was the first to come up. Small world!
Hey Donte, love to watch you do pit fires. You mentioned a sealer for the pieces after the firing. What is that sealer, and what other products have you experimented with in the past. I've tried some clear spray coats, and various wood and car waxes, but none ever seem to give the high gloss finish that I would like. Thanks again!!
There is a product available in Australia called liquid quarts. Look up #madeofaustralia the use nano technology to seal a biscuit pot…. But it’s not shiny…
This is so cool! I want to test pit firing!! Which is not gonna happen soon as it is winter where I live and the city doesn’t allow pit firing. Gotta bug my friends that live outside the city. Post pandemic. In the summer 😉 Thanks for sharing tips! Loooove your videos!
The big pieces need to be horizontal or they have a really big thermal gradient across them and they can't take the stress. Also traditional potters keep the busted bits to cover the new work as this helps reduce the thermal gradients.

i really want to make ceramic pendants in a pitfire. would they need to be bisque fired beforehand? Or is pitfiring not recommended for small objects? i don't know much about ceramics or pottery so i guess ill be going through your videos to learn more :D
Yes. The issue with putting greenware in a bisque raw fire is that the heat increases to rapidly and usually explodes your work. It is heavily suggested that you bisque your work before putting it in a pitfire . Otherwise, unless very specific or lucky cases, your work will explode.
@@EarthNationCeramics sorry to hijack and reply to an old comment - is bisque firing only possible using an actual kiln? Trying to get a cheaper setup, thought I'd found my miracle! 😂
i can't believe that youtube removed community captions. are auto captions still a thing ? though it only really works well enough with slow clear speech :(
@@alcrz3943 its so hit and miss, I make content for work and use Rev.com, it's so inexpensive and even for the handful of views we get it's worth making sure vids are accessible
I have a couple of deaf subscribers that brought this to my attention sometime ago. I have closed captioning on all of my videos. I believe you just have to push the CC button. The videos should already have closed captioning, UA-cam provides them and I don't think you have to pay for them. I'll double check just to make sure tho, ty. (Edit) - it seems like UA-cam took the automatic closed caption feature off of most videos and I was unaware of it. I will consider paying for closed caption in the future.
@@EarthNationCeramics thanks for your reply! I pay for captions on my own content as auto captions were unpredictable to say the least! I can recommend Rev, its really inexpensive and quick

Just received a beautiful pit fire vase from Earth Nation Ceramics. It is stunning!
Are all potters chaotic and happy people?
Chaotic? Maybe. happy? Naw 😅

@@EarthNationCeramics Oh I know. I get this excited every Thursday. I am very nerdy.

Too bad about the plates, they were going to be amazing; totally agree on the thermal shock.
You can try tintsugi using tin as a substitute since you don't have enough gold.
"Most people don't want to buy large artistic plates from me." UMM, YES I DO!
I'm working on the store update but the weather kind of stopped me from drying my stuff out quickly .

Awesome video! Would have loved to hang out for a pit fire!
Do the lady potters have their own youtube channels? Cuz they seem chill af
They do not butt within the video of their instagrams :)
@@EarthNationCeramics ok thanks
I don' t understand that process but looks like fun!
It was so cool meeting the both of you🤩, sorry for acting so weird😞...
Have you ever tried using dried fruits and veg like The Great Pottery Throwdown contestants? (During the pit fires)
Yeah. it makes good color.
Can you get some of the wood for future firings and then cover it with a tarp?
Sure
I do a lower bisque to 950 degrees c instead of 1050 and the work can with stand the shock better

That makes sense, thank you for the tip

You should google aqua globes. Those narrow opening vases would be great rebranded as a auto water for plants.
Please please please!!!! KINTSUGI!!!!!!
Your large plates🙏🏽☺️

I'd love to know what sealant you use if you don't mind sharing.
Is it safe to glaze pottery with amaco glazes and pit fire them? Where it’s safe to eat out of?
Carosine is the thermal shock
