Have you driven a vehicle with a CVT? Why do you think they suck? I own a manual and a CVT. I don't find anything wrong with the CVT, it does not suck. Usually people that post crap about CVT's, are just repeating things that they have read.
My parents have a prius which is a CVT and i hate it... no feeling of the gears and as such no way to change gears ahah I know that the prius isn't meant to be a performance car but manual is still so much more fun
Jason, love the Crosstrek! As for the mpg gauge, the scale it's using is your average mpg. the middle tick mark will always be at whatever your current average mpg is on your trip meter. Still seems kind of worthless to me, but at least it's not as simple as a throttle position.
My father has a 14 5mt crosstrek and I have always loved it! It busts through snow and kicks ass off road. We have also used in for a few family trips and it holds 4 plus cargo very comfortably.
He's referring to the STI 6 speed which is a durable gearbox. I know of a person who swapped their 5 speed dogbox to a 6 speed for better daily driving, durability and no complicated dog box.
STi 6 speed gearbox short ratio with DCCD, EJ207 twin scroll turbocharged. Would be a extremely responsive and reliable package. the 2.5L can be problematic, where the ej207 is a proven package and is much cheaper to make power vs the 2.5
I just bought the 2017 w/ CVT about an hour ago. Great car. I was already a subscriber and was pleasantly surprised that one of my favorite UA-camrs also considers this car a good choice. Cheers!
I've had my manual XV Crosstrek since 2013. I'm in Canada so I was able to get the limited with the manual transmission. It's been a fantastic vehicle for me. All the pluses and minuses you put are spot on. Mine doesn't have that silly MPG gauge on the instrument cluster though, it's part of the digital display.
Hello, Big fan of all your videos. As a original 2013 Subaru Crosstrek owner with 60k miles on it so far i can give you some owner impressions after the car has been broken in. After 25k i noticed a significant change in suspension it got a lot more rough and bumps seemed to really become very noticeable. I thought something was wrong with it but it turned out nothing was wrong with it. The power is severely under powered and feels like you are maxing out your engine every time you want to merge on the freeway. You will start to notice the car drives hot...and over long road trips you will feel the heat coming from the gas and brake pedal. The heat shield on these cross treks are horrible and allows a lot of heat transfer. More creeks and noises noticeable compared to other subaru models and more dashboard and window noise and creeks than toyota and honda cars. The positive is it does fantastic off-road and in snow and loves to go on the mountains. It's cool for packing in things and great for when it rains heavy. Other than that it's a good solid car, visibility is great. But honestly if i had to do it all over again i would have chosen a different car.
CONGRATS! Love the color. I also love my 14 Crosstrek for Colorado. Here is what you'll hate if you off-road: * No power * A bit too soft suspension * Incline plane is very low (see no power) * Approach angles are difficult to judge with the lower front facia * CVT needs a one more lower ratio ... or ... anL1 on txfr case * Too quiet. Needs throttle feedback. Replace muffler with smaller glasspack * Looks ... like a lifted Impreza ... change front up a bit (lights/wrap/winch...something) Here's what you want if you off-road * Under-armor protection. 8.7" of clearance really isn't much. Unless you lift, get some armor under there. That plastic skid plate tears up easily. * Tires. Love the Geolandar's for road. Love the Geolandar AT/S's for off-road. Love my 16" Champiro for snow. * (Eventually) a small 2" lift * (Eventually) either a proper turbo ... or ... electric turbo (I'm leaning towards this). Regardless, I have spent countless days trying to find a good intake combination that retains the brilliant SoA designed airbox/MAF (sans carbon filter) and straight shot to the intake. Regardless, we would love to see your build relationship with the Crosstrek (psst, eturbo).
One of these in that color was driving behind me last night and it was the first time I thought maybe getting a Crosstrek wouldn't be a bad idea. It's funny how a color can change your mind about a car. I didn't even know a manual was an option on these.
Appreciate the commentary, and was particularly interested in your thoughts, went back and forth between the Crosstrek and WRX the last year or two and ended up with the WRX (happens to have a 6th gear, lower revs on highway, a proper temperature gauge, same AWD, just no Forester suspension). Also watched your reviews on both up to that point so thanks! Obviously not as fuel efficient, and unfortunately no longer a hatchback, but I can certainly see why you chose this, looks like and excellent vehicle (especially if you're able to own the S2000 as well!). Seems you're happy with the choice and will no doubt be great for skiing/road trips/camping, congrats on the new vehicle! (I can appreciate the Crosstrek, but from someone who doesn't have an S2000 in the garage, I'm super happy with the '17 WRX, awesome car as well!).
Dude, You can see your oil's temperature on your multiple fonction screen, the ''triple meters'' screen. Hold set button on your steering wheel to open settings and set oil's temperature for 1 of 3 meter. :)
Great video. That vehicle was definitely a good choice for you but, I would have went with the CX-3 because in Florida there aren't any mountains or natural hills. Plus, I just like the overall styling of the Cx-3. Thanks for another awesome video! Keep up the great work! -DriveAndBeDriven
The CX-3 is fantastic, not much ground clearance unfortunately, and less room inside! One of the few in this vehicle genre that's actually fun to drive.
It's too bad they didn't give the CX-3 a live rear axle considering that they are trying to go for a more agile and sport entry in the sub-compact segment. I would still prefer the CX-3 though. -DriveAndBeDriven
I have a 15 Crosstrek! It's the premium with the CVT. The gearing is nice for highway driving. At 80 mph it only turns around 2600 rpm. I have had it for 10 months and already logged 12k miles with no problems. The only issue I have had is the AC compressor has started to make a slight whistle sound only when you accelerate from a stop up to about 15 mph. It hasn't been annoying enough to take it in yet. You made a great choice for a practical car!
I had the same reaction to the MPG meter at first, but there's a bit more to it than meets the eye... The center of that meter is whatever the current average MPG is for the currently selected trip counter (A or B). It is relative, but that is what the center tick mark is based on. Change the trip from A to B or vice versa, and it changes how the meter behaves with the new average. I own the CVT version of exactly what you have with 20K+ miles already, and loving every minute of it! Good choice!
Keep an eye out on the cam carrier gasket (outwards in it goes rocker cover gasket, cam carrier gasket then head gasket) because they tend to leak almost from the factory, usually before the first service. Should 100% be covered under warranty thought. Bloody great car other than that.
I like the EE symbol on the rear window - it's a good idea because it's an easy way to advertise the channel without having a permanent sticker. Downsides, I think you will have a small limit in rear visibility because of the dust on the rest of the window. Overall, a good modification to your new car!
Ha! I knew people would give me crap for filming my car so dirty with 100 miles on it, so I was like whatever I'll put an EE logo on it and call it a day.
really? we got my wife one of these, (exactly the same in that blue except w/ the CVT) and the one thing that bugged me was that it didn't have a real temp gauge. I'll have to go flip through the manual again - does it come up as you scroll through the options or something?
Yeah. If you are stopped with the parking break on, press and hold that button in, and you can customize the screens. the '3 up' (i think it is called) screen that has the 3 info points, can have engine temp displayed - also i think you can put it in the header where the time is. (I've got the 5 speed manual hyper blue touring (Touring is Canadian, but i think it's the 2.0i in the US)) If it helps, i can totally make a video tonight on what to do.
Hey, I'm glad you're enjoying your new Crosstrek. I drive a 2014 Impreza Sport Premium 5spd which as you know is basically the same vehicle. The rev hang you speak of is entirely ECU related and helps with hydrocarbon emissions. A simple reflash with tweaked firmware can eliminate it and immensely improve the driving experience. The way the stock throttle mapping attempts to smooth input (more emissions/economy nonsense) makes downshifting smoothly/quickly difficult without perfect rev matching but that's just a matter of practice and getting used to the hang IMO. Also, the mpg gauge uses your average fuel economy for your currently selected trip as the center reading. Ex: Your average MPG is 30 and your current instant MPG is 32 so the gauge will read slightly to the right of center. Still mostly useless and a coolant temp gauge would have been much better but I thought I'd offer some insight.
@@RandomlnternetGuy However, I wipe my kids' mud, food, drink, barf, mucus, piss, and crap right off the leather in my van; the cloth in my jeep looks like it's been through some truly horrible experiences.
I got a 2016 hybrid touring. It's such a nice car and so comfortable to drive. People have nothing but positive things to say about it when they ride in it. A little perk to the hybrid is the second LCD screen. You can program it to show oil temp.
I always preferred the 2.5 litre engine Subaru used to put in everything, I have an 06 Impreza Outback Sport with it, and it doesn't do that much worse with gas mileage but is rated at 173~ hp.
As far as I understand, the "rev hanging" Jason is talking about on electronic throttles is due to emissions regulation. I've read (so please correct me if I'm wrong !) that when you close the throttle body quickly, it releases a lot of unburnt fuel in the exhaust. That's why newer cars with electronic bodies tend to "hang" the revs to let them drop slowly/smoothly.
That AND "hysteresis." With that mechanical throttle - linkage, cable, etc. - you have a connection that you hold steady or vary on demand; And it's a gradual thing. The drive-by-wire throttle is on or off several times a second over the course of its total travel. You don't want to let off the gas and have the RPM immediately drop as fast as electrically possible. You need some sort of delay built in, to account for slight throttle variations, otherwise the car would lurch all over the road whenever you stab the pedal or pull off quickly. I find it quite fascinating! It's almost like you need to re-learn a little bit. The benefits of fuzzy logic and such!
The mpg gauge in the Subaru XV helps the driver for fuel economy by indicating if you are easy on the gas pedal or not by displaying it as a comparison to the average fuel consumption value from the infotaintment system. So if the gauge reads less than the median value marked on the gauge , it means that you are spending less fuel per kilometer than the reading for average fuel consumption displayed in the infotaintment system and vice versa when the gauge reads more than the median value.
First time coming to US (Seattle) back in 2012, I was really really surprised by the amount of cars being automatics; lol I thought automatic never existed until earlier 2000's, and damn I was wrong big time. I'm originally from Vietnam and manual is the majority, even in taxi's and buses. Glad to see you picking the manual choice #SavetheManual
i have a 2015 manual, apply some pressure to the shifter, hit the clutch and the shifter will move instantly - it shifts smoothly if needing quick shifts
Coolant Gauges aren't the only thing that should NOT be taken out. Oil Pressure gauges might mean jack all to most drivers, but to those of us who know what they are, it can be a great way to tell you to knock it off whatever you're doing because you're being oil starved. A light that comes on below 2 PSI doesn't help. Oil pressure lights are basically spun-bearing assistant systems if you rely on them solely.
Black doesn't just look good, it looks great...for about two days, baha. Unless it doesn't rain! I've had mine looking good for a week. Waiting on a detailing spray that repels ALL dirt away the car.
As a fellow Crosstrek owner, here's a piece of advice, keep an eye on the oil level in the engine. During the first 4k miles its gonna burn out the oil real quick. I had to add oil add at about 3k. But after your first oil change, you'll be fine.
If you'd like the engine temperature, here's the trick from my MY2015 Forester : the triple meter in the multi-display (the little one, on top) has that one available. My brother's 2014 XV has it so it should be there. Put on ignition without starting the engine and configure away.
I work at subaru and we worship the star on the rear diff. We believe it prevents rear diff leaks. Still haven't seen a rear diff leak with the star on it.
Great car. I have a 2016 CVT, and while it took some getting used to, I'm now really enjoying it. Totally agree with your comments about the MPG and oil temp gauges. That MPG gauge is really odd, and the first time I drove the Crosstrek, I kept looking for the oil temp before I realized it's just a binary light (though I think there's a third setting: blinking red, which is "STOP NOW!"). Looking forward to seeing how yours does off-road.
The Volkswagen Alltrack woul've been a good choice more trunk space 6 speed manual will be available or a Duall clutch 170 hp engine 199 ftlbs of torque at a very low rpm but it's your choice and I fully support you but it would be cool as soon as you can get a press car and compare it to you're car and drive in the same on and off road and do the dirt hill test .
Love mine! First 2500 miles keep revs below 2500ish, next 3000 below 3000-3500, next 2500 below 4k. Your engine will let you know when it is properly run in. Change oil every 2500 miles in the beginning. Expensive for some I guess, but worth it. Change the rear 16mm say bar with the 20mm one. You will be amazed. Hope you have lots of fun with it.
I liked the Forester better than the CrossTrek. The Forester has a 2.5 vs a 2.0 Also, the Forester has a 6 speed manual. Both are about the same size. Also, the Forester was a tad cheaper.
I am looking online right now at a 2017 Forester 2.5i (pretty much base model). I am comparing it to a CrossTrek 2.0i Premium. Same cost actually ($24,000) Both are manual transmissions. Perhaps the premium means 'loaded' . For me, I liked and almost bought the Forester because of its better gear ratios along with a bigger motor. It puts it in the league of: Altima, Camry, and Accord. The CrossTrek is in the: Carolla, Civic, and Sentra segment. Being, that, the CrossTrek is not a bad car, just not for me. Getting off the topic, how is it to back up? Can you see easily out the rear window? I once test drove a new Ford Fiesta. That was a nightmare to back up. I noticed that the smaller the car, the harder it is to back up. They seem to have higher rear shelves and trunk lids. Can you do an engineering explained on why that seems to be the case? Not only that, why do we need backup cameras installed? Why are they engineering new vehicles that make backing up much like backing up a box truck, going by the mirrors are camera? Old cars were easy to back up. Heck, one could even drive going backwards. lol
Interesting colour choice! Nice looking car. All of these modern CVT, DCT and other crazy transmissions just bring complexity and potential for issues that a tried and tested manual box avoids.
I have an older subaru, and the boxer engine with the low weight, really does help with cornering and such. Plus, havent you noticed, all subaru engines are boxers?
snoopdogie187 of course its kind of their thing but in a car like this the weight is high anyways because of the ground clearance. fitting this with a boxer is like milking a dead cow. the boxer is probably the reason for the rpm problem too because of all that rotational mass added by the strange engine design.
Chris S. The engine has a lot of weight, so yes, lowering it still helps, even with how high the ground clearance is. I have the outback with just over 7 inches of ground clearance, and it still handles better than most typical lower cars. As far as the rpms, that probably has more to do with it being a drive by wire engine and not the engine itself .Boxer engine doesn't really add any rotational mass, and you must realize, even if it did, the engines are aluminum, meaning they are fairly light for their size. The only thing having the boxer engine adds is another cam shaft that has to rotate since it has two engine heads.
snoopdogie187 i wasnt talking about the engine block itself. that is perfectly light an low but the extra camshaft is adding cost, complexity and rotional mass. in a boxer 6-cylinder your probably not going to notice it but in a 4-cylinder it adds up. its just an inefficiency thats not worth it in my opinion.
As a fellow Subaru owner (BRZ+Impreza), some recommendations. * Get Weathertech FloorLiner. Factory ones are comparatively crappy. They forced me to buy the all-weather mats, so I just put them on top of the Weathertech. * Get Philips 7443 Red Vision LED stop/tail light set (2). LED brake lights are 0.166s quicker to full brightness. Yes, Philips bulbs work on CK wired sockets. Just make sure the polarity is correct. * Someone mentioned blinking brake light. If you care about that sort of thing, 3rdbrakeflasher has this cool accelerometer based unit. The whole thing fits in the plastic cover under the high-mounted-3rd-brake-light. I set mine to be basically like a normal brake light during normal driving. But on mid-g-force braking, blink 6x+ON and on high-g-force braking, fast-blink 16x+ON. Gives nice contrast. * Very early in their lives, I ran my cars through incrementally higher rev acceleration as well as engine braking in the hopes of seating the rings. Maybe it didn't do anything, maybe it did. I don't have any oil burning problems with my cars. Dang, I sound like a sales person. Oh well. I just really like the products mentioned. Trust me, there are tons I wasted my money on, too.
You can if you know how to tune your own vehicle. advance timing, leaner mixtures in vacuum side of the map/low load, run richer/reduce timing on high engine load. (this is for turbochargers) reliability is related to the way you drive, the understanding of your vehicle and regular proper maintenance, this applies to all vehicles.
That's a Subaru for ya! It does a lot of things, maybe none super beyond all others, but it does a bit of everything quite well. That you bought this car makes me happy: others will see how great Subies are, despite a few minor issues. (I have a Forester as an "upgrade" from a tuned 300 hp WRX and I love it!). Good on ya, love the videos!
Subarus are comically unreliable, come with insanely high maintenance costs, are insanely overpriced, yet feel cheap and tacky, age terribly and truely horrifying depreciation. (This is called the XV in Britain, and I had a friend spend the equivalent of $36K on it new and had to sell it for less than $13K three years later). This one in particular is especially terrible because it's the size of a large van but has the storage space of a small hatchback. The only thing it's got going for it is the AWD because admittedly Subaru is the only manufacturer who seems to take AWD seriously.
BritishCommentWriter I have heard many good things from Subaru owners and just bought one myself. I have just one question for you if you don’t feel that Subaru is a sound buy could you tell me just what brand is your cup of tea?
Subaru is great. Drive an 81 BRAT everyday. Original motor, the ea-81 boxer. Only things Ive had to replace are rubber parts, hoses, cv axles, wheel bearing/seals, etc. Trying to restore to factory condition, it's a big project but well worth it.
Bought a 2016 Crosstrek in Quartz Blue Metallic. I saw the hyper blue but it looked better on the STI then the Crosstrek. I have a premium, I think the seats are not that comfortable, I shift in my seat on longer trips to get comfortable.. I just hit 8,000 miles on mine. The stock tires went through 18" of snow in PA in January without a single issue, tires are fine unless you go off road a lot. I average 27 mpg over hills going to work but when I'm on the interstate, I get 33 mpg. My first CVT, and would definitely rather have a regular automatic. Things I don't like, the halogen headlights, stereo is ok, but I can live with it. The headlights should be HID like Canadian models or LED which are coming probably in the 2018 Crosstrek. When I took my Crosstrek in for service for the day, I was given a new Forester for a loaner. The Crosstrek should definitely have the 2.5 litre engine, power feels a lot better, the 148 hp just doesn't have enough HP when you have a full load with gear in back. Overall though, it is a great vehicle.
Welcome to the 2.0i club! Pretty sure my '15 Impreza has the same motor. Has great pull around 3k as I've found, but it is a bit hindered with the CVT. I've found the A/C really drags when you're starting from a stop - the CVT decides to keep the RPMs down for some reason. I totally would've gone with the 5 spd manual, but thanked myself shortly after beginning work in Baltimore MD. Traffic is not manual-friendly around here!
I like cloth more, too. But, the leather in my 2015 Crosstrek Limited feels great and I don't slide around in summer or winter clothes. BTW, I put in the STI rear anti-sway bar and it made the highway stability and around-the-town driving more firm and fun. Good luck!
That's awesome, you're driving up Bogus! I'm a Boise guy myself. About to buy a 2016 WRX! Been watching your videos for reviews. Keep doing your thing!
+Engineering Explained we almost got the same cars. I have a '15 Impreza sport limited and '02 ap1. Now all you need is a '14 Audi and we'll practically be twins.
das hasguns They're POS here in Canada. They rust up to dam fast up here. I had to undercoat my mine 2 times a year and it still managed to rot the floor out
My wife had a 2015 Crosstrek Limited with eyesight. Desert Khaki. I had a 15 WRX. The interiors are almost identical and I don't think the crosstrek has much more room than the WRX to be honest. Problem with the crosstrek was the abysmal power and CVT. We got rear ended coming back from florida vacation this summer and after we got it back from the body shop we traded it for a 2017 Forester XT with the 2.0 Turbo that my WRX had. We love the Forester.
I have the CVT Crosstrek 2017 and I love it. The transmission is a lot better with sustaining the optimum RPM. I feel like the gearing is a lot more robust so the ratios are not the same as it would be with a standard transmission. I will admit there is not as much wheelspin and initial getup, but I am very happy and impressed with the CVT. Also With the CVT limited version, I get the eyesight, which is a must. It is certainly one of the best adaptive cruise control systems on the market. For long-distance trips is a must-have. It reduces fatigue and workload on the tedious portions of the trip.
I purchased a Black 2016 Crosstrek CVT with the I-drive and the cloth seats. I think the CVT is less sluggish than people realize because no one seems to like to rev the CVT to higher RPMs and keep it there. I think this is just a mental aversion to the sound of an engine screaming without changing gears. It isn't a fast car, and isn't meant to be, but it can and will run with normal traffic. It is also a very comfortable ride on rough roads. My wife has a 2013 Honda Civic coup and on the same rough road I was surprised just how rough it was in the Honda having only driven it in the Crosstrek. I think this is a good practical choice and one of the few small SUVs that I can sit comfortably in the back seat with the drivers seat set for my height. It fits in compact parking spaces, the doors are small enough to open when you are fairly close to another car but large enough I don't struggle to get into it. All around this is an excellent all-wheel-drive economy SUV with surprising off-road potential. If Subaru decides to follow-up with a Rally inspired version of the custom Rally XV used in China it will be a beast. instagram.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/t51.2885-15/e35/13551582_736927139783793_1004571329_n.jpg
I love Subarus - their practicality, engines, suspension, but geeeez, they have so cheap looking interiors. I guess you have to deal with that when buying Japanese cars. Look at Volvos, my friend (and European cars in general). Just my 2c
Thanks for replying. Not taking anything away from the car. As long as you like it (the interior) - the car is pretty much perfect. And yes. Volvos are very expensive.
Idk my Subaru LGT has a really nice interior, comparable to those overpriced German "luxury cars" plus it was about half the price and twice as reliable.
I love your channel because you actually think about this stuff instead of just "throw a lift kit on it." I lifted my Jeep wrangler 3 inches and switched from 31 tires to 35 inch tires. In order to correct the steering geometry I also had to replace the front upper and lower control arms, rear lower control arms, front/rear track bar, and a few bits and bobs to extend break lines and shift the exhaust pipes. also switched to wider tires and a different offset on the rims to widen the base to offset the center of gravity being raised. I still need to swap my brakes and deferential gear ratios to get acceleration and stopping back to stock specs... the list never ends once you start.
Rev hang in 1st gear only. If anything it makes you think about shifting slowly from 1st to 2nd, which can be beneficial because 1st to 2nd shifts grind easily if executed too quickly.
Congrats on your new crosstrek! Last month I traded in my Golf GTI for a CVT hyper blue crosstrek. I miss the acceleration of the GTI (mostly for the on ramps) but other than that and the CVT it's a fantastic vehicle. Whenever I accelerate the CVT feels like it's stretching and springing back like a rubber band (if that makes any sense).
I have a B9 Tribeca and when I dropped it off today for the hood latch recall, they gave me a 2.0i one of these. You are correct that the lack of proper gauges is a highly annoying issue with these Crosstreks. The B9 only has the temp gauge extra, but I do have the economy gauge in the center stack that ranges from 0 MPG to 75 MPG which is nicer than the sweeper needle with no point of reference. I do like the Crosstrek, but I passed a Forester and a Tribeca tonight and felt much much smaller, which I know is from the Impreza underpinnings, but wow is it a good bit smaller. Still a nice car to look at and drive, but it makes me miss my B9! Especially that CVT trans. I do not care for that on this loaner Crosstrek they gave me.
you can actually get the coolant temperature. you can change the settings in the top screen. It shows me the engine temperature evry time my car is on.
One more thing good with higher clearance on the road is that you can drive over bits of shredded tires and small debris that somehow we find often on highways.
Causally doing my research on this vehicle. Didn't realize this was in Boise until I started watching. I'm literally planing on getting the literal exact same car from Larry miller Boise on Monday! 😂 Glad you're glad you went with the manual, I was on the fence about it.
Funny: I just went the other way from you.......... traded my 2014 CVT TOP Crosstrek for a 2017 WRX. My only problem with the Crosstrek was the power...... of lack of it...... My wife's daily driver is a 16 Forester, so we still have a trail car. Had the suspension modded on the Crosstrek, it handled well for a Crosstrek. Have fun in your Crosstrek, hope you enjoy it.....
I own an xv and now have 11k on it. Watch your oil level for around 6k miles. Mine would burn a decent amount till it was broken in fully. Congrats and good luck!
I also thought the MPG gauge was pretty damn useless until I fired up the EyeSight driver assist in traffic or while on road trips. It works so well that I often do not have any pressure on the gas pedal while letting it do it's thing. That silly MPG gauge offers some visual feedback, especially while accelerating uphill, while the noise of the kids drone out the wimpy engine. The eyesight is also pretty good upgrade as it allows me a few extra seconds to reach back and smack the kids without feeling too guilty. Parents, take note.
Almost everyone in the U.S are driving automatics. Good to see someone still interested in a manual
manual all the way, CVT sucks
Have you driven a vehicle with a CVT? Why do you think they suck? I own a manual and a CVT. I don't find anything wrong with the CVT, it does not suck. Usually people that post crap about CVT's, are just repeating things that they have read.

The 2018/19 model has improved the heat transfer and noise levels FINALLY:) Yes still missing the engine----------but im ok with that!
Michael Smith Has it really? Thanks.
Just wondering, as I just bought a new 2019 Premium 4 days ago.
CONGRATS! Love the color. I also love my 14 Crosstrek for Colorado. Here is what you'll hate if you off-road:
* No power
* A bit too soft suspension
* Incline plane is very low (see no power)
* Approach angles are difficult to judge with the lower front facia
* CVT needs a one more lower ratio ... or ... anL1 on txfr case
* Too quiet. Needs throttle feedback. Replace muffler with smaller glasspack
* Looks ... like a lifted Impreza ... change front up a bit (lights/wrap/winch...something)
Here's what you want if you off-road
* Under-armor protection. 8.7" of clearance really isn't much. Unless you lift, get some armor under there. That plastic skid plate tears up easily.
* Tires. Love the Geolandar's for road. Love the Geolandar AT/S's for off-road. Love my 16" Champiro for snow.
* (Eventually) a small 2" lift
* (Eventually) either a proper turbo ... or ... electric turbo (I'm leaning towards this). Regardless, I have spent countless days trying to find a good intake combination that retains the brilliant SoA designed airbox/MAF (sans carbon filter) and straight shot to the intake.
Regardless, we would love to see your build relationship with the Crosstrek (psst, eturbo).
Oh, yes...sorry. I know it's a 5-speed manual. The rest applies.
One of these in that color was driving behind me last night and it was the first time I thought maybe getting a Crosstrek wouldn't be a bad idea. It's funny how a color can change your mind about a car. I didn't even know a manual was an option on these.
I like that your review is more of a logical choice, it's more about it's strength and weaknesses than what it's not.
New WRX is amazing! I'd take the FA20 over the EJ25. It's an awesome engine. Congrats on the car!
Dude,
You can see your oil's temperature on your multiple fonction screen, the ''triple meters'' screen.
Hold set button on your steering wheel to open settings and set oil's temperature for 1 of 3 meter. :)
I think that requires the Limited model, I don't have the color screen up top. Please don't use all caps, thanks!
Have you reviewed an OBD II scanner ? Monitor lots of things in real time.
I have a 2014 Impreza sport trims with 5 speed manual transmission and oil's temperature is available on screen :P
"They're a little wide for me."
With all due respect dude, you're outside of the norm for 99.8% of the population. :'D
3x standard deviation!
I can't believe how light that thing is. I thought it was going to be heavy
it's built off the impreza platform but given a 3 inch lift kit
Yeah, with those power specs, I was thinking that it must be ridiculously slow. But 3100 lbs. + AWD shouldn't be bad.
My Sedan is 700lbs heavier....
One of the first reviews I saw on this car did make mention of "tinny" sounding doors. Maybe not the most solid car in some places.
Could be because a lack of sound deadening
Great decision, I love the XV and have owned it for 3 years now. Congrats!
Flip through the upper display in the centre dash - You can customize it to show engine temp.
really? we got my wife one of these, (exactly the same in that blue except w/ the CVT) and the one thing that bugged me was that it didn't have a real temp gauge.
(I've got the 5 speed manual hyper blue touring (Touring is Canadian, but i think it's the 2.0i in the US))
If it helps, i can totally make a video tonight on what to do.
I'll always opt for some good cloth seats over leather ones.
Leather is COOLLDD in the winter, cracks over time, takes forever for seat warmers to warm up.
@@RandomlnternetGuy However, I wipe my kids' mud, food, drink, barf, mucus, piss, and crap right off the leather in my van; the cloth in my jeep looks like it's been through some truly horrible experiences.
@@nettles89 good points!
@@RandomlnternetGuy yeah idk why leather is consider luxury lol I hate so much they look so ugly but anyways just my opinion
I got a 2016 hybrid touring. It's such a nice car and so comfortable to drive. People have nothing but positive things to say about it when they ride in it.
A little perk to the hybrid is the second LCD screen. You can program it to show oil temp.
Cool purchase. Great all around choice. Leave it alone....except do the 20mm oem rear sway bar upgrade. 90.00$ great feel
Andrew MARGOLIN Would you recommend this on a new, 2019 model, too?
I always preferred the 2.5 litre engine Subaru used to put in everything, I have an 06 Impreza Outback Sport with it, and it doesn't do that much worse with gas mileage but is rated at 173~ hp.
Congratz again !! Now can u explain between Electronic and mechanical throttles ??
Thanks both of you !!
As far as I understand, the "rev hanging" Jason is talking about on electronic throttles is due to emissions regulation.
I've read (so please correct me if I'm wrong !) that when you close the throttle body quickly, it releases a lot of unburnt fuel in the exhaust. That's why newer cars with electronic bodies tend to "hang" the revs to let them drop slowly/smoothly.
triggermovies That's sounds legitimate !! Thanks bro
***** That's nice !!
Long story short, it fit YOUR needs rather than other people's WANTS
Coolant Gauges aren't the only thing that should NOT be taken out.
Oil Pressure gauges might mean jack all to most drivers, but to those of us who know what they are, it can be a great way to tell you to knock it off whatever you're doing because you're being oil starved. A light that comes on below 2 PSI doesn't help. Oil pressure lights are basically spun-bearing assistant systems if you rely on them solely.
Nice I went with a black 5 speed after looking for a hyper blue w/manual for awhile with no luck
Nice, black always looks good!
Black doesn't just look good, it looks great...for about two days, baha. Unless it doesn't rain! I've had mine looking good for a week. Waiting on a detailing spray that repels ALL dirt away the car.
How does this compare to the Honda HRV?
I'm getting my brother's 2015 xv Crosstrek. Base model. Orange with 5 speed. With 67000 miles. Great deal
This video is great thank you
As a fellow Crosstrek owner, here's a piece of advice, keep an eye on the oil level in the engine.
@2:20 why is there a star on your rear differential?
Who knows, ask Subaru.
Subaru comprises of satanic pentagram worshippers
For Ze Judes...
Damn Daniel lol
I work at subaru and we worship the star on the rear diff. We believe it prevents rear diff leaks. Still haven't seen a rear diff leak with the star on it.
YES HYPER BLUE and a YELLOW S2K amazing color combo
Like the Crosstrek, looks great - also keen on the Forester XT, but that does not come in manual.
The new XTs are awesome... but they are priiiiiceyyyy. Almost as much as my STi.
I think that paint makes the dirt look good. great choice oh and thanks for showing the drivers view with the road too! keep up the great work
Good idea on buying a separate vehicles for your intended purposes.
I'm in love with your combo of a Bright yellow Honda and a Bright blue Subaru.
The Volkswagen Alltrack woul've been a good choice more trunk space 6 speed manual will be available or a Duall clutch 170 hp engine 199 ftlbs of torque at a very low rpm but it's your choice and I fully support you but it would be cool as soon as you can get a press car and compare it to you're car and drive in the same on and off road and do the dirt hill test .
isn't the boxer not on the reliable side?
HA
hey feel free to educate me if I'm wrong
I think this is a good idea, the new alltrack looks almost like they were trying to copy the outback except the 1.8t instead of the boxer
Head gaskets are their weakness basically.
Forester is not cheaper, larger than I wanted.
My biggest problem with this manual crosstrek is that it doesn't have a 6 speed
Except it does - in europe. Instead of 5mt we have 6mt. 2nd gen now got it and Subaru took it away here tho :/
Its only cvt now
Same here!got rid of my 14 wrx hatch and got a 17 crosstrek premium cvt. For practicality driving and comfort driving!
why did they go with a boxer? i mean they dont need to get the weight low and an inline would be cheaper to do.
Chris S.
Have you ever tried driving one before?
YES so sick man congrats. STI swap?? 😛
now that's an idea I like
the nsx idea is nice, but a coyote would be so much sweeter imo
No no, 20b rotory swap.
You can if you know how to tune your own vehicle.
advance timing, leaner mixtures in vacuum side of the map/low load, run richer/reduce timing on high engine load. (this is for turbochargers)
reliability is related to the way you drive, the understanding of your vehicle and regular proper maintenance, this applies to all vehicles.
Voodoo swap!
What's that thingy in the middle that you keep moving forward and back?
😂
It's called a handbrake dude. You been living under a rock or something? Tf how else is he braking so smoothly
@@bvedant no it's a manual car. Very few and far between
@@ted101975 dude I was joking lmao
My Mom bought a Subaru Forester about a year ago. It gets surprisingly good fuel economy for an SUV!
The Forester (I have one) has a 2.5, but you're still right. I'm getting 27 MPG average.
mind telling me your engine rpm at 5th gear while going at 100kmh?
Just got my 2019 Crosstrek Limited. I want to thank you for introducing me to this Amazing vehicle! :D
Great choice, can you do a long term update video after couple months, I'm considering buying a crosstrek in the near future
+Rumesh Lance actually have one coming soon!
Rumesh Lance it seems like the 2018 one will be the way to go especially if you want manual :)
Subaru is great. Drive an 81 BRAT everyday. Original motor, the ea-81 boxer. Only things Ive had to replace are rubber parts, hoses, cv axles, wheel bearing/seals, etc. Trying to restore to factory condition, it's a big project but well worth it.
Is this Boise, ID?
It is! You're driving to Bogus!
Man I thought the exact thing!! He is driving to Bogus, could see "Boise National Forest" sign.
Looks like he picked it up from Larry H Miller based on the front license plate insert!
Saw that, too. My dad grew up around Caldwell, so I'm vaguely familiar with the area.
I'm excited for my road trip, with my STi, from Georgia to Canada... I love it, but I need something like that for a daily, Crosstreks are awesome
All this talk of "terrible" fuel economy in the 20+ mpg range... meanwhile I'm getting 13mpg with my Range Rover :P
I'm looking to buy my first car and deciding between Crosstrek 2013 or 2012 GTI. I don't understand how AWD works. Can you explain ?
I only get about 14 on a good day with my truck and it's a V6 hahaha
You can NEVER go wrong with ANY Subaru. They make the best cars.
When you hear someone say 23mpg highway is terrible and I'm over here getting 14mpg highway on a good day with a lifted jeep😂
johnnyboy Beast same… I’m about to trade in my wrangler for most likely a crosstrek
I would've made the same decision with the Crosstrek it's definitely the most practical and I love the color.
You missed a chance to make a video on how to break into a brand new car
I didn't miss the chance haha, the car still only has 200 miles on it. Subaru's recommended period is 1,000 miles. I've been thinking about it!
Well, I guess I'll wait for it now!
Overall though, it is a great vehicle.
damn son... its blue af
Haha, so blue! :)
+Engineering Explained I love the color!
Makes a video about not resting your hand on the gear shift... proceeds to rest his hand on the gear shift :P
Some habits are hard to kill haha! As long as you aren't putting longitudinal pressure, it will be fine. 👍
Aha indeed, still find myself doing it from time to time as well!

Awesome RS!!
+Engineering Explained we almost got the same cars. I have a '15 Impreza sport limited and '02 ap1. Now all you need is a '14 Audi and we'll practically be twins.
SMURF BLUE! I had one for 3 days as a loaner car. Wow the attention you get driving a hyper bright blue car drove me nuts!
Thank god you didn't buy a Jeep.
Jeep stands for
Just

Every

It stands for that because people like to upgrade them NOT because they are unreliable. They do have the second highest resale value after all.
das hasguns They're POS here in Canada. They rust up to dam fast up here. I had to undercoat my mine 2 times a year and it still managed to rot the floor out
I can vouch for that. Our TJ's frame rotted away so we sold it.
Keon R. Someone else is problem
You went Manual. Nice choice. Way closer to "real" driving. Great car!
"So you know.. I can take two friends in the back and one up front" WELL THEN Jason, NOW I see why it's more practical for ya!
We love the Forester.
first, NEW RIMS PLEASE and exhaust system so it doesn't sound like a stock corolla
You should have gone with the Cx3, much better choice
Unless you're looking to take it off-road
he did consider it...
the CX3 seems like a lot of fun take a mazda 2 and put a mazda 3 engine in it. but it costs so darn much i would just rather have the mazda 3.
Much less room, noiser and harsher ride (not good for road trips). The whole point was to have 2 separate cars with distinct advantages.
he is single, cx3 has enough room for him, the engine sounds nice and it is fast, and the ride is sporty and confortable, and looks way way better
Just my 2c
Volvos are super expensive haha. V60 is great but starts at $36K.
Thanks for replying.
Not taking anything away from the car. As long as you like it (the interior) - the car is pretty much perfect.
And yes. Volvos are very expensive.
The interiors are fine. The engines (head gaskets) are an issue.
Volvo's are nice cars, except for the typical Volvo owner.
Idk my Subaru LGT has a really nice interior, comparable to those overpriced German "luxury cars" plus it was about half the price and twice as reliable.
Subaru's base and premium interiors aren't the greatest. The limited interiors are amazing though.
I love your channel because you actually think about this stuff instead of just "throw a lift kit on it."
I lifted my Jeep wrangler 3 inches and switched from 31 tires to 35 inch tires.
Haha yep, but at least you're doing the right things!
Next video: "Why I sold my Hyper blue Subaru Crosstrek"
Rev hang in 1st gear only. If anything it makes you think about shifting slowly from 1st to 2nd, which can be beneficial because 1st to 2nd shifts grind easily if executed too quickly.
4:30... the real reason is cus CVT sucks... the end :D
Lol! Poking fun at those certain biased anti-CVT people. I like it! XD
CVT is great. The Subaru CVT is crap
Victim #1... :D
The CVT is faster.
Victim #2 :D
Congrats on your new crosstrek! Last month I traded in my Golf GTI for a CVT hyper blue crosstrek. I miss the acceleration of the GTI (mostly for the on ramps) but other than that and the CVT it's a fantastic vehicle. Whenever I accelerate the CVT feels like it's stretching and springing back like a rubber band (if that makes any sense).
Right on! GTIs are super solid cars. But nice to have the clearance and AWD.
Yes it is! Let us know how to performs in the snow.
The preferred vehicle for lesbian couples everywhere...
"wasn't a big SUV" xD "Good fuel economy rated 31 highway" xD wtf lol i dont understand
not a difficult sentence
its not that big its like the size as the wrx/sti/impreza its just lifted
How is that a big suv?
bloody huge car wtf, look at it, how big to cars have to get ffs
Josh Briggs It's not huge it's a lifted impreza
you can actually get the coolant temperature. you can change the settings in the top screen. It shows me the engine temperature evry time my car is on.
How do you do that?
Screen Settings, triple meter. I have to mention i own a 2015 impreza so it could be different but i doubt it.
