Take the VIN number to your International dealer and they can get you a copy of the build sheet. I did it for my '69 Scout 800A.

    • @waltkeyes57
      @waltkeyes57 Рік тому +14

Having the build-sheet is important for IH light trucks. My experience (limited) is that IH sourced parts like I used to drink beer--anything available. Same model year could have more than one (sometimes more than two) brands/sizes of unimportant items like rear wheel bearings--super frustrating.
Nonetheless, they are like Jeeps in that the same frame was set up for multiple GVWRs and drivetrains. I converted a 1/2 ton 2WD pickup (1100?) to a 3/4 ton 4WD pickup by cannibalizing a 3/4 ton 4WD 'Struggleall' we bought as a donor. Manually hanging that cast iron divorced Xfer case on the frame mounts while lying in the dirt, by my lonesome, was a feat. These things are like lego machines; mix and match.

@@waltkeyes57 I found that out on old GM trucks too. I have a 46 GMC that I found out has the same type of issue on U-joints. It hasn't been on the road in almost 30 years. It is sitting in a nice dry clean concrete floor shed, but life has gotten in the way. little things like a family, job, divorce etc. I bought it in 1987 and dailied it until about 93. It's my first truck and am not selling it.

My dad bought one just like that from the state auction and it was the bright safety yellow and hadn't been started forever, i had it running in no time and it ran good and had the granny trans in it. He drove that old truck every day for 30 years, he would leave his new cars sitting and jump in the old international and go hundreds of miles away and back with no trouble, the only thing that we had trouble was it was a short bed and when the road was wet it would spin out in the curves so quick it was crazy, and we changed the tires twice trying to get it to stop but it was so light in the back it wouldn't hold the road in a turn, and we wasn't going fast. But it was a good truck. That's a fact

Nice work with the old International Harvester. What a crazy shift pattern for that transmission. I have never heard of that style pattern before. It was also nice to learn about heat treating the aluminum. I always learn something from your channel. Awesome work as always. I especially like how you stop when you are not having fun. I need to learn how to do that with my projects.

That is a well-appointed truck. I figured it had a slide in camper right off when I viewed those hold down hooks on the bed and of course the missing tailgate. Poor old truck is the victim of somebody not knowing what they are doing as to the servicing and adjustments but overall it is pretty complete. Of course the wiring is a bag of snakes but that is expected for any add on items that are not factory. When you get it squared away it will make a pretty good serviceable truck. As you probably know the square body Chevrolet trucks have that same issue with the hood bending. It is a safety design engineered into the hood to fold up upon a front end collision, but as the hood hinges wear and also rust up then the hood will bend like that when one goes to close it. There are support pieces available just like the ones you made up and of course some lubrication on the hood hinges helps out. Of course like yourself I fix a lot of things with an oil can.

Hey. On that 10mm bleeder. I recently installed new wheel cylinders on a 1960 CJ5 with 9” brakes. The mounting bolts were threaded correctly for the SAE bolts from the old wheel cylinder. Mounting went great. Then when I went to bleed the brakes they had the famous 10mm bleeders. So you may have the correct wheel cylinder that was manufactured offshore like mine was. Who knows?
    Thanks for the fun. 🤠

    Little by little you're getting - r - done.
I worked on a 1969 - 72 Dodge that had brake light issues. After much aggravating time tracing wires down, the problem was in the turn signal switch. That's where the power splits between separating the Left and right lights. Or diode as you say.

I looked through to see if you'd done another video on this. A couple of things I know from working on vehicles when that Cornbinder was new. 1st gear is really a creeper gear, and you generally start in 2nd, unless you're pulling something heavy. Second thing is, the problem with the left taillight is probably in the turn signal switch. I made that frustrating discovery in a 1974 Econoline van.

ATTA-BOY James! Nothing like resurrecting older rolling iron. I was thinking about differences between Your IH and the latest and greatest '23 4X4 trucks. Yeah a nice new truck is pretty and all, but only if ALL of the bells and whistles were assembled correctly. AND, what about the "Ghosts in the Machine" in the CPU, bad programming will wreak havoc on the other systems. NOPE, I'D PREFER TO STICK WITH THE OLDER TRUCKS THANK YOU VERY MUCH...

One thing I remember about the old corn binders was that it was important to have the serial number when getting parts. Ignition parts could come from any of several manufacturers depending on when the truck was built. I guess they must have jobbed out bids, and took the best prices when building em'. Still, you could have a barn dance on them and never leave a dent. I miss em'. We had that shift pattern on one, don't remember year or model. The 345 was twice the engine of the 304, had to reroute the fuel line on one that vapor locked, LOL good memories, they would get you anywhere and you wouldn't forget how you got there!

Here's a tip for a cheap wire protector. Find yourself some used cheap garden hose, push your wiring through the garden hose & waala your wiring is protected. Works great when having to run trailer wiring from the controller to the back of vehicle. Use some silicone caulking to keep water & dirt out of the hose.

Lay a patch of screen across the plastic break and spot heat the screen until it sinks into the plastic. When done leveling the screen into the plastic you wipe the iron back and forth to level any high plastic to smooth it out a little.

Such a sweet old truck! I'd really love to own an IH like this one some day. They have such a "power language" to them. They just look like they're unbreakable and ready for anything. And they basically are too!
Here in Sweden they're more or less unobtainium though, and prices are ridiculous. But i do have a neighbour who owns an old IH tractor from the 70's that he actually bought new. I believe it's a Hydro 186. His son has now taken ower the family farm. And the IH is still there, doing the work like it was nobody's business.

Man that's a cool old Cornbinder, great find! Looks like your neighbor has a sweet yellow "A" model KW Aerodyne as well. Man I need to move down there, cause ain't none of that stuff still in Ohio that hasn't dissolved yet.

What a great project man. And I agree, if it’s not fun you’re doing it wrong. Wise move just figuring out a better solution with the brake lights.

The videos are awesome 👍. Good knowledge with real life situations and the ingenuity to deal with them. The humour is on point 😅.

Brake light issue: May want to check the turn signal switch itself. Brake light switch should send power to a set of contacts to energize BOTH rear turn signal circuits(to act as brake lights). Left turn would disconnect the left rear turn signal circuits from the brake switch contacts and connect it to the flasher(similarly for the right turn). Hope this helps, as I also noticed the same confusion on the red Jeep “double duty” front turn signal issue.

Search for brake-light-wiring-with-3-wire-turn-signal-help in the images portion of the favorite search engine... for a pretty animation/diagram...perhaps this comment won’t error out this time....

I agree, I did a bad job explaining the issue. I compounded that with what I did on my last turn signal install on the red jeep. I started with a turn signal switch that did not have the brake light isolation, and used diodes to straighten out the flow. Then I swapped that one out for a newer style turn signal switch with a brake switch input in that same Jeep. When I did that, I realized that I had the "trailer light" connector for my tow bar wired through the front turn signals, which meant that I had to keep them wired to the brake lights in order for that to still work.
I'm working on a video of wiring up the mutt truck, and I'll do a fresh install and hopefully I can do a good job of explaining it then.

if your thinking of a diesel engine swap, i recommend a DT360 or DT466, then you keep the engine International

IH makes good trucks, work horses. I had a Great Uncle that loved those international trucks but as far as cars, he was a Chrysler man all the way! Nothing wrong with that. Oh, he also liked the Checker cars, you know of Checker Cab game. But he worked for Chrysler and Checker both , of Michigan, he was a supervisor at both places. Anyhow, good stuff buddy, been subbed to you for about 6 months or so.
