- I got the chance to pair up the Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM lens with my Sony A7cii and take it for a spin. There are lots of example shots as I explored Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms as well as sharing my thoughts on pairing this premium lens with the slightly smaller A7cii.
* the b-roll video captured in Battersea Power Station was also captured with the 35mm f/1.4.
Thank you for watching.

06:09 Does It Work Well With A7cii?
What is your go-to lens?
The Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM is one of them.
Choose the 35 f1.8 for the cost and weight saving. Decent lens and the aperture ring is the one thing i miss but overall happy with it. Close focus is what made me chose this over 40mm lens
sigma 35mm f2 dg dn
@@neeravnaik nice choice. I’ve heard good things about this one. Close focusing is always a great bonus too. Might miss my aperture ring a bit 🤔
@@DjimmyTrovy it is a beauty of a lens….
This is my only lens at the moment and I’m absolutely in love. 😍
Btw I’m also shooting with the A7Cii
Ah nice, it’s a beauty 🙌🏼 Was just going to ask what body. Have you tried it compared with some of the G series primes?
Thank you for the real world review, very much appreciated.
You’re very welcome, thank you for watching 🙌🏼
I have the G series 24 and 40 and I love them as they are just the right size to pair with the compact body of the A7cii
My 40 is my workhorse and favourite too. Have you tried the 50? Or too close to the 40?
Another great one! Do love shots from the 1.4. Personally, I switched from Prime lenses to now just a 2.8 24-70 and a 70-200 but do truly miss some of the closer prime ones sometimes.
Thanks Tom 🙌🏼 I’ve gone through prime and zoom phases too. I definitely miss the versatility of the zooms now. Hence my more recent purchase of the 16-35 too - but also miss the 2.8 on it as it’s only f/4. Always a weigh up between cost, weight, size, quality 👀👻
@@HannahYoungPhotography I went through that a few years ago and switched to essentially all Prime lenses. They are incredible but it does mean either switching or holding yourself back and going again if you see some things that you didn't expect when out. Now I mainly use the 24-70 2.8 unless it's for something specific when I'll take either the 70-200 or the 10-20
Some great pics in Battersea. Looks amazing inside. Last time I was there was working the Olympics 12 years ago and they were just starting development. I need to go back.
Thank you. It’s really quite impressive, definitely worth checking out. There’s a lift in one of the chimneys too which is pretty fun. Enjoy ☺️
Great photos!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Hi Hannah. I use the 35mm GM on both the A7RV and the A7CR and on the latter, I agree, it’s borderline big. It’s a great lens though. Have you tried the 16-35mm f2.8 GM II? It almost the same size as the 35 and I think it seems a tad lighter. I tend to have that on the A7CR as a walk about lens. Must get to Battersea when I next make it to London. Try the new Station station 😅
It is a beautiful lens, I can see why you love it. I have not tried the 16-35 2.8 but have certainly spied it, would be super nice also. I think I might be able to borrow one to have a play with which would be fun. Also have thought about the new (ish) 16-25 f/2/8 G series - looks kind of interesting too. Have you tried it?
Hi Hannah I’ve had the 35GM for a long time, but recently bought the little 24G for my a7RV. Even though it’s a full size body, I’m really enjoying shooting with the 24G more - I love these small little lenses. So I’ve had the 40G in my basket for quite a while. What are your thoughts on them in regards to image quality and aperture being as you have the 40G? I was pleasantly surprised with the 24G.
Hi Manny. I’m a huge fan of the G-series compact primes. Have also owned the 24. But the 40 f/2.5 is my absolute favourite. It’s exactly the same form factor as the 24 so perfect pairing with the A7cii. The 2.5 is fab, well enough for me as is the quality which I have no issues with at all! Enjoy - if you do hit ‘buy’ 👻
@@HannahYoungPhotography Hey Hannah my apologies for the late reply! Thanks so much for the info - very much appreciated. I shall pickup the 40G too!
@@MannyOnePointFour no worries at all. I hope you enjoy it 🙌🏼
Great Video
Thank you and for watching 😊
Great Shots ! Im not a Sony User but my go-to-lens seems to be my dirt cheap TT Artisan 27mm 2.8 or my 35mm F2 , both on my FujiFilm. I have so just bought a fun little TT Artsan 18mm, only cost about £50 , fix aperture , bloody small and lightweight, turns the camera into a ‘point -and -shoot’ They do a Sony fit version and recommend picking one up just for a bit of fun. Couple of other things I noticed , you lost a screw from your capture clip and your rocking a nice Gshock 👍
I might well have to give that little lens a whirl - thank you. Sounds like fun!
Ah me too. Only noticed the screw missing when I got home and then when editing realised it was just on the edge in that opening clip, rattling around a bit. I have found the thumbscrew ones a bit annoying acutally. They keep coming loose. Have had to switch back to the hex bolts. But to be fair it says on my bag all the time now so not a major issue. ps. new watch is a treat. Little birthday gift - loving the old school vibe. Also enjoying taking a break from notifications on my arm ;)
Gotta love a ‘vintage’ Casio, as a watch collector I must have over a dozen! Definitely try that little lens, it’s amazingly good for the money 👍
Is the max 1/4000 enough for the 1.4 aperture for most of your shooting?
On this day it was. Only maxed out on 1/2000. It was a pretty gloomy and dark day. If it were my lens to use all the time and wanting to shoot at 1.4 would definitely need a filter 👌🏼
Nice shots!
Yeah the 1.4 is cool and all but seems like a hassle to bring it for purely street. The G Master’s image quality is so nice though 😩
I know. Tricky isn’t it. Cant have it all…
I have a Sigma 35mm, 1.4 lens that is stunning but I never use. Too heavy, The Tamaron 28-200 zoom is my current walk around. Very light and 2,8 is plenty for what I shoot.
That’s amazing that a 28-300 at 2.8 is so light too 👏🏼 I’m edging well on the side of 2.8 or thereabouts being enough for me too.
I don’t know if you have the 24mm f2.8 G and use it but the 24mm f/1,4 GM is smaller than the 35mm GM so it’s more manageable. Also the 50mm f1.4 is smaller than the 35mm GM. I have these. Also consider Sigma I-series 35mm f2 and the older Sony FE 35mm f1.8 which is nice and light. A lot of videographers like that since it has almost zero focus breathing. Nice video. Take care.
I’ve had the 24 2.8 which I did really enjoy. Interesting the GM runs smaller than the 35. As well as the 50… thanks for the tips. Will definitely look into them 🙏🏻 Appreciate you watching 😌
nice bgm
🙏🏻
I like the small samyang 35mm f1.8. Very sharp.
Must take a look and compare size/weight …. Thanks for watching 😄
I second the Samyang/Rokinon 35mm f1.8. Great performance, and at $300 USD, it’s about 1/4 the price of the Sony 35mm GM.
Where ya get your strap Hannah ?
Hey John. This was a recent birthday pressie and addition to my kit. Absolutely love it, especially for my ‘walk around’ set up. It’s from a company called Woodgate Leather. It’s the tan colour, 43’’ with the PeakDesign quick release anchors. Super nice 👌🏼
😊
🙌🏼
I love 1.4, but I feel this lens (and all 1.4) are too front heavy on this body. I prefer my Sigma 35 2.0 on my A7Cii.
I think I’m of the same conclusion. Super nice to have the f/1.4 but ultimately probably not worth the weight/cost - especially with such a small A7cII and a day to day style camera. Fun to play with. My 40 f/2.5 is my similar love to your sigma 🙌🏼
Agreed. We have the 24 and 35 1.4 and 50 1.2 which are awesome on the A9, A7R4 and A74 but are too big on our A7c2
On a side note, I love the area as well and I think it’s a shame they developed such an iconic place in London with a… shopping centre. It could’ve been a community centre, a space for the arts… but meh, all spoiled with shops. You made it look nice though 🤘
I know what you mean. It is a super cool area and I do quite like the aesthetic they went for inside, guess they gotta make their £ back. Lol, these shops are definitely browsing ones too ;) It was like a bit of a (photographers) playground at 7am... can recommend!
Will check it out one of these days ✨
go away!

I can’t comment on the lens you used as I use completely different setup to you, but I’ve recently found your channel and love it. I lived in Pimlico for 20+ years until a year ago and have more photos of the power station and surrounding area than pretty much anything else in London. It was my go to area when trying new lenses or different focal lengths and I never ever tire of it. Keep up the good video work x
