Kind of want to mention: no matter how much you love dogs, please DO NOT distract service dogs. yes they are cute. yes you want to pet them, but these dogs are very important to their handler. these dogs are medically necessary, and when they are distracted by children (or even adults) tugging on them or yelling about a dog, it can distract them from their job and cause harm to their handler.
please respect disabled people. their service dogs are what give them mobility and independence.

I hear all the time people saying that their ESA is a service dog and they really in the rule that you can’t ask any questions “Comfort Dogs are Not Service Dogs”.
Blair ik this is 5 years late except youre right , this is why my 6 year old labarador retriever is only ESA and Therapy k9 , he has done so much for me that i wanna share the same comfort with others that he does for me

As a service dog handler I have heard the "service dog registration" question so many times. And even big dog trainers like CM have registered their dogs.

I don't have a service dog but do have depression. I used to think a dog for emotional support was a joke...but my little aussie saved me...I realized the difference they make. I don't know how I will function without him now. He is only 6 months and still training. I don't even know how he gets trained for service dog. I just thank God I have him now.

Sorry to hear you are suffering from depression I am glad to hear your wonderful dog is helping though. Please,please,please don't just buy an emotional support dog certificate from some phony on line vendor. Please seek out a support dog training organization near you. Your dog will do more for you than you ever thought possible. Your dog will be more alive than ever with true training and support. Both of you will reap the benefits.God bless.

Service dogs are trained for people who are disabled and do multiple tasks for their handler only
Emotional support dogs provide comfort to their owner but require no training and don't have public access
And Therapy dogs help other people, and go to hospitals, nursing homes and sometimes schools
I guess i just meant mine is not certified to be for emotional support. I just realized he helped me tremendously when i got him and began working to train him. Sorry just a statement on my part. Didn't mean to confuse anyone just saying i just realized they really make a big difference.
@Jack K i'm still researching this, but i'm pretty sure you need to be prescribed one from your therapist or doctor and then you either get your own dog and train it yourself (or if you already have a regular pet dog, give it psychiatric service dog training) or find one that's already trained, but the training has to be specific to your own needs, so you'll probably have to train it yourself or hire a professional to teach you both. like, do you need your dog to remind you to take your medication by bringing it to you? do you need them to force you out of bed because you have no energy to do it yourself? do you panic when in crowds and need them to help give you personal space or sit on/lean against you so the pressure helps you from disassociating? etc. once you have all of that figured out, you can decide what your service dog's tasks will be and how to train them to do these things.

My service dog is 11lbs and have almost been attacked various times by fakes. Because she is small that would result in immediate death or retirement, and I would be out of my independence. I completely agree, there are too many pets. 😭
Live love Dogs That’s probably not true. You have to find that information on a government website for any accurate information. There are fake registrations online that will lie about the laws to trick people into buying them.
can i just say how thankful i am for this video ive had people bring their pets into stores and say they are service dogs and they have attacked my service dog or just straight out been out of control i once almost got kicked out of a store because of someone else's dog attacking my service dog, thank you so much for making this video and putting your voice out there for us

Zak, thank you for doing your homework and getting the correct information out to people. Thank you also for asking folks not to take their non-service dog out to public access places. There are so many distractions out and about and adding to the distractions can cause extreme harm to the SD handler. The one task my service dog had not been trained to do was to speak via hand signal only. THANK YOU, Zak, for your video of how to teach your dog to speak. My SD got it in under five minutes. We practice all tasks daily and my SD is VERY good at speaking by only seeing the hand signal for it. No treats/food rewards needed. :)

I was trying to research this last summer when I was thinking about training my puppy to be a service dog and the differences between each type of dog actually aren't nearly as easily defined when you first google it, so I really appreciate you making this - thank you!!
I have been watching your channel ever since we found our little furbaby Bella. I must say I am so excited you made this video. I am a young disabled mom of 2 with over 13 surgeries and counting and a survivor of cancer. My conditions began effecting me in my mid 20s,(5yrs And counting now) so the changes were rapid and hard to deal with. I lost my first dog because my condition sped up to where I couldn't take care of myself and it was unfair to our little Charlie (a wonderful but very hyper pit mix who needed exercise daily as any other dog would too.) I'm happy to say I am in remission now and one year surgery free from the other conditions. Life is getting better and I took this time of health to find Bella. She is an aussie/husky breed. Your videos have inspired me to begin her training at home and they have all worked! I have trained Bella solely using your videos! This made it possible for her to actually become service dog Trained. The cost of getting a service dog was overwhelming for us. Being able to do all of her initial training helped us enormously. They only had to train her for my specific needs which was far easier finacially. My conditions are fatal and incurable, so having Bella really is life changing. Training her at home has also pulled me out of a terrible depression as well. I guess you can say my service dog became my therapy dog! Lol
So, we would like to say from myself, my family and bella, thank you so much for all your videos!!!!!

I'm planning on using your videos (and books!) to help train my future service dog!
I'm currently working on a law dissertation on the subject of service animals. I love the way that you have very clearly outlined the laws around these different statuses. If you're curious there are a few articles out there that outline a lot of the changes that should be coming to this area of the ADA. In addition, many states have recently enacted laws that allow them to prosecute individuals that impersonate service animals in public accommodations. Also to more thoroughly understand the Department of Justice's definition of "individually trained" I recommend looking at some of the case law surrounding this issue. Some good ones would be Lentini v. California Center for the Arts, Escondido or Storms v. Fred Meyer Stores Inc. Another important issue would be the constitutionality of excluding emotional support animals under the ADA, because their handlers meet the definition of "disabled" under the ADA. It will be interesting to see if this ever makes it to the Supreme Court and is overturned. Thanks for such an education video Zak!

It was probably a fake Service dog. Someone mentioned "the dog probably had a bad day" if a service dog had a bad day and tried to aggressively attack another dog that dog needs to be retired from Service work or taken to a trainer to figure out why that happened and don't allow the dog to work until it's fixed.

I am owner training. Lol I don't know if i would call it self training because I am getting tips help and advice from professional dog trainers as well as watching Zak's videos and listening to other service dog handlers that have had to train the same types of tasks as i need to. I am not going thru a program for various reasons.

This was a great video! I have a service dog and the questions or comments I receive most often are: How did you get one / how can I get a service dog? What I think should really be emphasised to people who are considering owning is how much work a service dog requires. Are you prepared to to extensive research on local laws and regulations, as well as what breed/characteristics would be most suitable for the tasks you need your dog to preform? Can you provide extensive training (as much as several hours a day) either yourself or by hiring a professional? Are you prepared to plan your day out extensively and ensure your dog has adequate excersise before outtings so he can preform his tasks calmly and competently? How about when you plan a specific outing and end up having to leave because a lady would not stop her children from trying to run over your dog with a stroller even after being confronted about it politely? How would you handle losing months of training to one person bringing their untrained dog into a coffee shop and letting it off leash to "say hi" in the middle of the busy restaurant? Can you handle staff and other customers comments about your physical appearance and whether or not you should have a service dog? Without my dog I would not be able to go out in public safely, but owning one requires a complete change in lifestyle and an enormous amount of patience and knowledge. It is not for everyone :)

I can only say sorry for the ignorant (or arrogant) people out there.There is more of us who try to do the right thing then there is the other.
retdep thank you so much for your well wishes. :) You are right about ignoring negativity, my quality of life has increased greatly despite the setbacks I've gotten. I wouldn't trade my dog for the world now that I know the difference he's made. Hopefully those who read my comment gain a bit of insight on the effort involved in having a working animal versus a pet.

Ok im so happy someone finally said it! This is so true and a bunch of people do it anyway and then when a real service dog goes in the same place they come across problems I know that bc I'm a service dog handler and this has happened to me a lot more then it should

As a lifeleing dog lover I appreciate how you have melded treats, reading your dog and their environment., and the relationship which is the foundation for a trusting companion. This vid is wonderful! Do you have/could you do a few vids on selecting a puppy-adult dog from a shelter/rescue? We had an epic fail at a choosing a dog several years ago...a shy fearful agressive guarding dog. Then a few years ago we had the great fortune of a sweet 8 year old-ish dog that took a bit of understanding but became our family snuggle girl. She recently passed away and while we loved her we cannot get over how to jump back into welcoming and selecting a dog that is a good relaxed temperament for our family.

Hey Zak! First of all, I just want to say thanks for all your videos! I have 4 month old Mini Aussie named Hudson, and they’ve been a huge help with basics training and getting a handle on my VERY smart puppy.
One of the reasons I chose to get such a smartypants breed is because I have ADHD. I don’t need a full on assistance dog, but I am am planning on training him to help me manage it. There are a ton of videos/resources for teaching dogs DPT, but there isn’t a lot on training them to do other things - like waking you up on time, reminding you to take your meds, alerting you when you’re hyperfocused, help with chores, or recognizing when they need to comfort or redirect you or drag you out of the house. It’d be fantastic if you could do some videos on training these types of tasks. I know I’m not the only one out there who could use the assist!

Thank you for making this. I am raising a puppy canidate to be my SD and your channel has been a large help with basic obedience. I love your explaining, it is clear and direct. I do wish though that you'd have pointed out to not distract a service dog. I watch many channels of service dog handlers and it is a massive problem. People freak out and even run to them full head on screaming that there is a dog to go and pet them when vested and despite patches saying don't pet, like dogs are some magical thing they've only heard of before. These dogs should never be pet or have their attention removed from their handler; it can be life or death for them.

Beautiful video Zak! I have a service dog. For visual guiding (legally blind) and forward momentum. I have a congenital heart defect + asthma. 95 percent of the public I have come across have been 100% kind, supportive, and helpful in the rare times I need it. Even if it is not all the way evident that I am disabled some days. But I do get the "I want a service dog, how do I get one". ... (and they are not disabled) I know where it is coming from, ... but no one would never wish such a severe life changing event in anyone's life. Though I would not trade my puppy or the 2 years of training for anything. I wish he was a pet, and I could drive my car to the store with independence again. So glad that you did this video. Very well explained! 🤗
THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! I am a guide dog user and this really helps. Because there are still so many stigmas attached to using a service dog. Especially after people try to pass off their fake service dogs. Especially those that are ill behaved. There is one other thing that I feel like you could have mentioned. That is that if a service dog is misbehaving that store owner does have the right to throw that team out. Please keep these service dog videos going.

Im talking to my therapist to see if i should talk to my doctor about a psychiatric service dog, and shes not really informed on the difference between PSDs and ESAs. I am trying to teach her but im so scared she's gonna tell me i need an ESA rather than a PSD. when i know a PSD will make my life better with the tasks.

When I was in the hospital they had a therapy dog and it came to my room but I only got to pet it for like 10 seconds. I didn't feel loved at all. But it was very soft and cute.

Im a owner operator (Truck Driver ) im able to be with roxy 95% of the time do you have any tips on brining my puppy with me to work in my truck i usually work nights and im home everyday. thanks again for what you do you and the knowledge you give us here on your youtube.
Puppies & matured dogs have been our companions since time unknown to us. They are not simply watch dogs, but much beyond that. They are our best friends and companions when we need the company of someone in loneliness. They provide us mental solace and address our stress. Their company works much more than medicines and conventional therapies. I’ve been keeping a puppy as an ESA for my grand uncle under the recommendations of Pet Support doctors and he is responding fine to the pet therapy.

Something that annoys me even though it happened YEARS AGO, I was in a co op thing, and there was a girl in a wheelchair, and had a service dog, we where in the same classes :) but something that always annoyed me was when kids would be petting her dog as she repetitively asked them to stop!! I was SOOO YOUNG but I was so annoyed at those people petting her dog!!
Have you considered doing a playlist on teaching dogs Service Dog tasks using their innate skills or behaviours they already have?
I'm working on my dogs reactivity on leash when excited (he whines and pulls then eventually sits for me and gives eye contact), and have already taught him to nudge my hand when I'm scratching to stop me, to come check on me if I raise my voice (I'm on hormone treatment so it helps me remember to stay calm), to nudge me when he's exahausted (so I go to bed at a semi decent time), and currently working on pressure therapy (having him feel comfortable laying on me to help me through a panic attack).
I'd love to learn how to show him how to open/close doors that are cracked with his nose or paw (we live with a dog that dislikes him so having my dog close and able to shut doors makes it easier to navigate the house safely for both of them), to lean on me or heel with physical contact (I have social anxiety), and honestly anything he'd enjoy learning since he's a Border Collie and loves to learn as much as I do.
Tricks he knows: Flop (he doesn't like staying for a bang so instead I taught him to lay on his back and paw the air), Sit pretty, Down, Sit, Stay (as long as I'm in his sight), Shake with either paw, Touch with his nose, Wipe your face (paws his face), Leave it (only leaves it if asked), Hup (hop up onto something or someone), Move/Back up, Come when called (with distractions he hesitates but always comes eventually), Bring it (bring his toy with him), Get it (retrieve his toy of choice for fetch, and/or put it on my lap if I pat it), Eat (will only eat if left alone with his food or asked to eat), Go Potty (tries to urinate on command or stares at me if he's empty), Go away (go find a place to settle), Go to your spot (go to one of the designated spots for him so he's not underfoot) and Drop it (Both for fetch and for dogs that steal toys out of his mouth and dogs that are toy possessive).
