#2 on the list (Jonah Lomu) was the baddest man I've seen play rugby. He was basically the size of Rob Gronkowski, but faster (some sources say he ran an 11.2 second 100 meter dash), which is freakish at that size. I would believe it based on what I see. He was also much larger than most for the position he played. An absolute New Zealand legend and icon of the sport.
Jonah's 11.2 was his s hool boy 100m.. hits fastest was sub 11. 6,5 118kg.. with balance and strength.. a true freak of nature..

Johna Lomu passed about 12 years ago. A great player from New Zealand. Here in South Africa, Springbok country, we remember him with fondness. RIP.
He passed away in November 2015 so it's 8 years ago this November. I live in NZ. He was a beast of a man and a very nice guy off-field too.

Jonah Lomu is a legend in world rugby. A one off amazing Rugby player. I'm English and he destroyed us in several test matches, but you couldn't help but be impressed by the skill and talent he possessed. Also a truly humble and amazing man. He died way too young. R.i.p. J.L.

Jonah Lomu (#2) is the greatest Rugby winger of all time. If he got 3 clear steps he became literally unstoppable. Huge, fast, strong, clever, agile, the lot. Watched him play many times. None come close.

I remember seeing Lomu at my son's North Harbour school rugby tournament over here in Auckland New Zealand (He was there as a guest rugby player to encourage the kids and offer his advice and sign autographs to inspire them) and he was going home after a long day doing autographs etc and I called out to him and he came back to me and signed an autograph for my young son at the time and he did it with a smile on his face and as a gentleman. Most would have probably been grumpy and reluctantly signed or just said no because they were off home after a very long day, but not Jonah. He always had time! Great guy and a legend of rugby. RIP big man.
The pads in rugby is like a tackle shirt you were UNDER your other pads in foot ball, it’s like a quarter inch of foam on the collar bone and usually around the kidneys to take some of that sting out. There’s also a cap that’s still thin foam that’s really there to protect your ears
School rugby is also brutal. I broke my nose when tackling a player and my collarbone broken when I tackled another. My team mate became an English international. We played his rival at another school. He broke his leg to ensure he would not be available to be selected.
Over a number of years, strength and bulk was increased. Currently several retired players are suffering from dementia from head shocks. They are suing the league for compensation.

To give some context on impact on the sport ( pun intended) Jonah Lomu with his size, speed, agility and aggression changed rugby forever. He was the complete package and every international team started looking for huge , fast physical players, usually but not exclusively of Polynesian descent. The genetics of these remarkable peoples is incredible, combined with an unmatchable warrior spirit and you have the ideal rugby player. I served with some Fijian lads, just the nicest blokes and very good soldiers.
Number 2 Jonah lomu went straight from highschool to the professional level and changed rugby all around the world. He is considered by many around the world as the GOAT.
and of course the great Jonah Lomu....a true gentleman of NZ rugby....he left us too soon...rest in peace brother...
Pads and helmets add weight, so actually more dangerous. Also while there are ‘forwards’ (broadly fight through each other) and ‘backs’ (chuck it around and run round each other), every player has to do attack and defence, and in principle have the cardio to go for 80 mins without formal breaks in play, unless substituted. These rugby videos are all brutality, the real beauty of the game comes from flowing passing moves in the backs. It’s poetry.

Jonah Lomu r.i.p came on the international scene in the early 90’s, he was an all black ( New Zealand) I think he changed the game of rugby, before him we (the rest of the world) had never played against someone of his size with his pace. He absolutely smashed players and will forever be an icon of rugby. The game has changed a lot since lomu, it’s a faster game with a lot of play out on the wing and I think alot of today’s professionals would of pretended to be lomu on the school field.

Take the time to convert kg to lb (multiply by 2.2). It will give you a better sense of how big these guys are. Eg Sonny Bill Williams at 2:20 is 6'4", 232lb. Google some of their 40 yard times too, some of these guys are linebacker size and wide receiver speed. Also, google Bismarck Du Plessis, the guy that Eben Etzebeth makes "tackle the air" at 6:34. That guy is a world class international level rugby player, so Etzebeth making him miss like that was pretty impressive. At 11:11 you have the honour of watching the late great Jonah Lomu, the greatest winger (possibly the greatest backline player) of all time. He ran around or past or through world class players, truly on his own personal level. RIP Jonah. Taken too soon.

Lomu was a true freak ( in the nicest possible way ) 6'5in 250 lbs and could do the 100mtrs in under 11secs. And one of the nicest guys off the field. Gone way too soon. RIP The Big Man.

He was a hero in and for the sport, whose name most people in Rugby playing nations knew. It wasn't so much 'New Zealand have beaten us' that the newsreader would start with as 'and [insert nation here] failed today to contain Jonah Lomu, they lost by 23 points and we are waiting to hear about the 3 players who are in hospital for precautionary measures, although Dave's punctured lung likely puts him out for the season...'. Number #2 Jonah Lomu 👑 , was an absolute animal. The best player to ever grace the game in my opinion, as a backrow player myself playing for 24 years at 34 now, and he still is my idol and many other forwards would agree. It’s rare to get that cross over normally a forward would say another forward was the greatest. A cruel disease took him away from us. I was very fortunate to watch him play for Cardiff Blues against Newport at the Cardiff arms park.
6’5 120+ kg and run the 100m at 10.3/4, their has been some monsters like him and similar in size but nowhere near his ability or devastation he had globally.
Fun fact he never scored against South Africa, and that’s out of respect of the player he was!

Jonah Lomu when he was playing he could do sub 11second 100m sprints and it was found out that he was having sub par kidney function he even had to have a kidney transplant but he still passed to young !
Back in the 1990's my father was the official orthopaedic surgeon for the South African Springbok Rugby Team. All those hits without pads DO cause a lot of damage.
Also if you want to see the hardest hits and fastest action check out any games with the All Blacks (New Zealand national team) or Springboks (South Africa national team) regarded to be probably the 2 best teams in the world.
Lastly Google the following rugby terms
Scrum: in your first video where the 2 teams are facing each other in a low down huddle.
Line Out: where the 2 Trans stand next to each other in a straight line and the ball is thrown in usually when one team member is lifted really high to catch the ball.
As a Kiwi, I think the Springboks are always our most physically demanding opponents. With some just absolute world class players. They never would not be included in a World XV

Players learn to tackle from a young age and to put their heads out of the way during the tackle. Also, a hand off is usually accompanied by the phrase “sit down son, the bus is full!”

Lomu was a legend, and despite being 120 kg, he ran the 100m in less than 11 seconds. He allegedly did 10.70 which incidentally would have been enough to qualify for the Olympic games at the time I think. For the 100m... The guy was a freak.

Number 7 henri tuilagi I was there for that game ! The cheap tickets where on the ground standing up and super close from the game. Good ambiance tho. The sound of that hit was terrific.
How Jonah Lomu is not #1 is shocking. Even the NFL wanted the Jonah. Maybe true that he was an Olympic level sprinter? Speed and power with incredible skills. Opposition teams would devote so much to stopping him he created endless opportunity for the All Blacks.

Jonah Lomu was the blueprint for a generation of players. He was sent back in time to show them what the future looked like.
Jonathan Lomu could wear his hair any way he pleased. One of the the most respected players of all time. 6 ft 3ins , 18.89 stones or 264.5 LB. Could run 100 metres in 11.2 seconds. It took multiple defenders to bring him down. Rugby players are big men, in a sport of big men he was often referred to by commentators as The big man. They were not only referring to his size. Everybody revered him in the sport.
Another comment - Lomu was the best. Even as a non-Kiwi, and as much as Lomu was feared on football pitches everywhere, I don't think anyone watching Rugby in the 90's didn't love the big man and just watch in awe.

Found this video of a very young Jonah Lomu before he became famous while playing for his school Wesley College in a NZ 7's rugby tournament in 1993. I remember watching this on TV back then and after watching knowing he was going to be an NZ All-Black. In 1994 that happened, and he debuted against France. In 1995 he excelled and gained loads of confidence & the rest is history. He was so shy back then, but his potential was huge, and he fulfilled that potential and then some. Imagine how good he could have been without his kidney disease! He was amazing performing with the disease but without it, the mind boggles. We will never know! you want a scary thought? When Jonah Lomu started playing, for most of his career, Rugby was not a professional sport.
im from wales, grew up playing rugby and then played running back for the local American airforce base in England.... the difference is you can get away with poor technique more in US football... a bad hit and both parties usually walk away... in rugby you get it wrong and you are just as likely to hurt yourself as much as the other player.... so technique is driven in more than "systems of play"... although this is now getting just as important at higher levels too....anyways.... both are great games to play...
The incredible thing about Lomu was that he carried a liver complaint for his entire life that, sadly, ultimately ended his life decades too early. Due to that it’s estimated that he was rarely more than 85% fit.

Watch the players they hit, they still do their job and ofload the ball. As tough as the man is who's hitting you, you've to be a resilient man to take them hits and keep playing. It's 40 minutes a half and doesn't stop every 5 seconds like American football, once you're on you're on!
Its not just the size of these guys its the speed from a standing start that is scary
When you see people flying on a tackle, keep in mind that cause there is no distinction between offense and defense and no breaks, you might see a wing trying to tackle e forward. It's as if a WR tried to block a DE/LB. Good luck!
There is two other types of rugby. Rugby Sevens based more on skill and speed 7 minutes a half. There is rugby league too which hit harder in my opinion having played all versions.
Also worth pointing out that there were several illegal plays in that montage.
You cannot hit someone with the forearm away from the body like that.

it's a bloody sport and we love it, a lot of it looks worse than it is but can be pretty brutal at times. the work out regime of most of these player entails lifting pints of beer to their mouths

There aren’t really pads tbh. Yes, they do exist (they’re much smaller and go underneath the shirt) but most pro players don’t wear them. I wore pads as a kid but stopped wearing them by the age of about 18.
Once skin tight shirts/jerseys became a thing and you’re old enough to have some muscle mass, guys stopped wearing them because it makes you looks more intimidating. Plus the pads basically do nothing.

Bro, you need to understand that helmets make ppl use their heads to collide, but without helmets, ppl try to use technique.
For that reason, NFL is much more savage, putting their bodies on the line for a few yards.
Both games are hard, but NFL is not to be overlooked.
