This is just ageing me but this is a list for the modern era, not all time. The size of the players has definitely transformed out of sight but the enforcers of the amateur era were another breed, especially before cameras became ubiquitous. Also worth noting the Tuilagis are an absolute rugby dynasty that would put the Mannings to shame. Six brothers all played professionally as have three of the younger generation. Its worth getting some highlights of the whole clan because dear god they were brutal. Also Brian Lima aka The Chiropractor belongs on this list. Ditto Julian White, if for no other reason than wearing a sucker punch from his opposite number (280lb international prop Andrew Sheridan) like it was nothing, then dropping him with a single blow.
In South-Africa the referees are more of the spectators. Piet van Zyl tackled referee David McHugh. South-African spectators can sometimes be far worse than the players.
Don't confuse fitness with stamina. It's like comparing a distance runner and a 100m sprint specialist, different requirements, different training, you can't say one is more fit than the other. NFL and Rugby are not the same thing, both have players that go hard and train harder. Why can't people just enjoy a sport, it doesn't have to be a "but my sport is better" argument all the time. Most NFL fans I know have loved watching rugby too, it's got many of the same exciting factors they love about the NFL but it's also it's own thing. I think the main issue is that American Football is hard to follow for those not aware of all the rules and culture surrounding it. Even with a friend explaining everything to me it took me a while to really get into and enjoy. Now I have the pleasure of enjoying both sports and sharing my passion for rugby with my friends in the US. It's worth noting, many of my American friends didn't even want to give rugby a look because of all the hate/insults rugby fans throw at American football. It took some effort to explain to them that if they love American Football, they will probably also enjoy rugby seeing as they share some common history. Show your friends what you love about a sport and they will enjoy it with you, make fun of what they love and they will hate both your opinion and your sport without ever giving it a chance.
@@Xaltar_ couldn’t agree more! And yeah I understand how some of your friends felt when we first started our rugby content. The crazy unrelated hate we got for liking the NFL was insane 😂 and you are right NFL definitely is hard to watch for the first time and be able to get into it. It really takes about a full year of watching it to understand certain strategies, the different penalties and how using the play clock to your advantage is crucial. They have similar concepts but as a whole the sports are so very much different and require different styles of training to be elite in the individual sports. Much like all sports. These people are professionals for a reason. They are extremely gifted and majority are extremely hard working to try and master their craft.
As a rugby fan I would say they are different sports and therefore requirements for players arent the same. Rugby is more attritional for the whole team over 80+ minutes but they dont all play the whole game. Because like in NFL you dont want the really big guys (linebackers/forwards) to get too gassed out too early. So player rotation is important in both. Whereas NFL plays are more concentrated within specific time periods, as you say stop start and they have twice as many players involved on each side. Theres also all that padding and equipment they wear, playing for longer stints would be taxing.
Bakkies Botha he invented hard hits in rugby he’s original enforcer who brought violence he hurts and put lots of rugby players in a life changing injuries some retired referee were so afraid of him cause he can rubbish you right in that field and never care about the outcome then he will laugh when you’re been taken to hospital that’s what makes him extremely dangerous rugby player in a history of rugby but he was our South African boy.🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Not even sure you realised... but 5 and 6 are different people. Brothers. Both absolute monsters of the game. But they look so similar and play so similar people don't noticed it's 2 different players.
Hey guys 1st this is not NRL this is rugby union ok so little bit of Skalk Burger nr 6...he is now retired but awesome player. He is actually 1 of the commentators in the background talking R.I.P Jonah Lomu he made his debut in '95 rugby world cup. Scored the most tries in that world cup ran over every team beside South Africa 🇿🇦 . South Africa won the world cup in '95. Lomu always said that SA team scare him because he never could get pass our defense. Eben etzebeth nr 3. Believe it or not cleanest record regarding red and yellow cards. He is the enforcer and absolutely the best. He currently back to back player of the yr and also played in 3 world cup of which was part of 2019 and 2023 winners. Nr 1 Bakkies Botha was the enforcer before He gave the enforcer jersey to Eben Etzebeth.
Unlike the NFL, if you can't tackle or take a hit, pass the ball proficiently, scoop a ball from the ground, etc etc, you're not making it as a Rugby player... One thing that always confuses me when watching NFL, dudes can't seem to pass a ball backwards, and are super rubbish at scooping a fumbled ball... weird man
LOL I dont know probably a lot of feedback after the event for league in Las Vegas. We were introduced to it a couple years back and have really enjoyed it!
yeah league is NRL. We are aware of the differences. We did a reaction to a video by this channel before and it had some league in it as well and thought that would be the case on this one, but it wasnt.
And something else. Jonah Lomu would have been my opposite number. Which means Id have had to mark him on the field. I was 5'10 and 70 Kg - He was like 6'6 200 Kg and did a 4.8 40M... He was incredible

Jonah Lomah was a 'freak of nature' and stood out like a sore thumb in the amateur era. He wouldn't stand out as much in the modern, professional era.
Jonah Lomu is THE GOAT! and i am French that recognize that. Respect to his memory
Believe me Eben was more afraid of the ref than the ref was of Eben.. In rugby NO player is afraid of the ref
In South-Africa the referees are more of the spectators. Piet van Zyl tackled referee David McHugh. South-African spectators can sometimes be far worse than the players.
Rugby players are wayyyy fitter than NFL players due to the continuous pattern of the game,no stop-start like in NFL
That’s not what this video is about but also is just not true.
Bakkies Botha he invented hard hits in rugby he’s original enforcer who brought violence he hurts and put lots of rugby players in a life changing injuries some retired referee were so afraid of him cause he can rubbish you right in that field and never care about the outcome then he will laugh when you’re been taken to hospital that’s what makes him extremely dangerous rugby player in a history of rugby but he was our South African boy.🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
can you Imagine Jona Lomu with an NFL armor??? its crazy just the idea
He is actually 1 of the commentators in the background talking
R.I.P Jonah Lomu he made his debut in '95 rugby world cup.
#6 & #5 are brothers. They both played for Samoa.
They have a younger brother that played for England.
Unlike the NFL, if you can't tackle or take a hit, pass the ball proficiently, scoop a ball from the ground, etc etc, you're not making it as a Rugby player... One thing that always confuses me when watching NFL, dudes can't seem to pass a ball backwards, and are super rubbish at scooping a fumbled ball... weird man
Why are Americans loving rugby ATM. It's crazy❤
LOL I dont know probably a lot of feedback after the event for league in Las Vegas. We were introduced to it a couple years back and have really enjoyed it!
RUGBY = RUGBY UNION
yeah league is NRL.
Or a 11 second 100m time
