Really shocked Bo Jackson isn't on this list. He was both power and speed in One package. We sadly will never know how good he might have been if he only played One sport but unlike almost anyone else he actually was really good at baseball and great as a running back. Only Bo knows if Bo should have stuck with just One major league sport.

No doubt .True FBs are Dinosaurs .But you are probably to young to remember Jimmy Taylor He might not have been the fastest but he was the pioneer of what used to be a fullback .Didn't miss many games . In the days when running the ball was the priority of offenses ,he played FB like he was a middle LB .! Certainly Peyton , Sanders were awesome .But this is video is about true power backs .Taylor was just that . It's doubtful in this day and age of QBs and WRs that one will ever witness another TRUE power back like these dudes ..

Agree, but "sweetness" was an all-round back. He cannot be limited to just a "power" back. He had power and finesse in a way never seen before or since.
For my eyes 👀 I can make a case for Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, and as mentioned, Bo Jackson for the GOAT at RB. After those 3 the Tomlinson, Peterson, and Marshall Faulks of the world make a case, with Payton, Dickerson, Dorsett, and Earl Campbell as the nexts*
The terms weren't used loosely back then, they are used incorrectly now. Like to the point that its essentially useless to even try to correct or educate anyone (what's the point anyway?). Back then though the designations you were given (QB, HB, FB) directly correlated to the position you lined up at before the snap. The quarterback was in front of the half back and the half back was in front of the full back. They didnt use the terms loosely at all. At some point the fullback designation starting being used for the half back who traditionally was involved heavily in pass pro and used as a lead blocker/primary runner in short yardage situations. I dont like when people call todays running backs HBs but honestly it's such a small gripe that I cant even believe I've spent this much time typing this out. Figured it beats staring at the bathroom wall while taking a poop.... which could honestly use a couple coats of fresh paint now that I'm looking at it.
Earl Campbell is without a doubt the toughest running back ever. The highest character of any mentioned in this video. As a rookie he took the Oilers from last to first place in their division with no other roster changes. A real american hero and an official Texas Legend. What A MAN!

Agreed. I am a Texas also so perhaps a little biased. But many former LB's said they feared tackling him more than anyone else. He batterd defenses. He did this without a great OL and the Oilers were not a great passing team. They were probably average in that department. They had a good QB and one good receiver as I recall. But Campbell was their offense. They came within one controversial call to making the Superbowl one year.

He's not one of the greatest power backs, though he IS the greatest evasive back. Probably the most fun to watch running back of all time. Earl Campbell is the greatest power back IMO, but also was extremely fast in the open field and possibly the most beautiful runner with regard to body mechanics and balance of all running backs. There's an Earl Campbell Top Ten highlight video here on YT. I think it's #4 where he's hit multiple times and finally the ninth guy takes him down - his most amazing power run IMO. And #1 shows his famous run where he batters his way getting mauled to the point where his jersey is torn off. Not just some of his jersey, but his whole jersey is shredded off and he's wearing just shoulder pads as he walks to the sidelines to get a new jersey. Different than Barry Sanders. Both the very best at their style of play.

Walter Payton not mentioned? Sweetness didn’t describe his play. He could stiff arm a tackler and knock them out. Saw him get off the ground doing a one arm push up handstand. He trained by running the sand dunes in northwest indiana. These lists are very subjective and bound to cause controversy, but no doubt you got #1 and #2 correct -- Jim Brown and Earl Campbell were the best power backs all time.
No way. Brown is so overrated as a power back. He had genius level skills in traffic. Similar to Warrick Dunn. The way he leveraged his body with angles and twists. But the commentator is drunk. Brown evaded most defenders, and most of the rest seemed to not know how to tackle. Today brown might be cut. And Earl Campbell was one of the best Tailbacks in history. He ran a 9.6. Had great vision and elusive skills. He would be all pro at 200 lbs
I know he wasn't around long to put up astounding career numbers, but Bo Jackson definitely deserves a mention. That guy was the closest thing we ever had to an actual superhero.
My main gripe with not handing the ball off to Lynch is, I get it you don't want to be too predictable, and even the best back still get tackled... but how could you not at the very least run a play action, just to get the defense to jump a little and give your receivers a slightly better chance at being open for a TD. Yes they should have handed the ball off, and everyone was expecting it, and yet you can't even fake it which would have helped.
Good list. I was a young child when Campbell was at UT. I remember listening to the games on the radio. Then watching him with the Oilers was one of my greatest childhood memories. He punished defenses. Too bad his body could not have held up a few more years.
Nice to see Jayhawk John Riggins on the list. They don't often have a good team, but when the stars align they spawn legends. He and Gale Sayers are two of the best backs to ever play the game.
Bo Jackson had no preseason and was so fast people probably forget he was just as strong as any rb who ever played. You have to remember he injured himself breaking a tackle that ended his career, how is that over looked

This is no doubt a list of dudes that were true gamers .Not many will remember Motley but a back with a lineman's number says it all !! But a great list of players that were a nightmare to tackle .Had forgotten Campbell and Csonka but this video made me remember how great they were .Tough ,tough guys that could have been MLBs . Y’all need to look at Pete Johnson. A 270# Nightmare who could also catch the ball. He should definitely be on this list. Dan Bunz tackle of Johnson in the Super Bowl is considered one of the greatest tackles in NFL. History. He literally broke his nose and blew out his ear drums tackling Johnson. Pete was definitely more feared than several selections to this list.

If you ever make that list, please don't forget the often-forgotten backs of the 70's, like Greg Pruitt, Terry Metcalf, Chuck Foreman, Joe Washington, Lydell Mitchell, Mercury Morris, Dickie Post, Floyd Little, etc. All of them routinely shook defenders out of their shoes!
Depending what era your from, & I know most of these lists are alot of recent players of this era, but Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Bronko Nagurski & Earl Campbell are the backs your hit with 3 players, & still couldn't stop them!

Many props!! Great list. There are some coaches who totally think outside the box. Bum Phillips once tried to get Riggins as Campbell's blocking/ number two back. Also, if I remember correctly, it wasn't so much his record, it was that Brown thought Harris was soft.

Jim Brown was great for his time but he played when defensive linemen were much smaller. At 230 lbs. and 6’ 2” he was as big as most of them. So unlike many of the other power backs whose opposing linemen average 280 and up just maybe he shouldn’t be number one on this list.
Wrong. He played as late as 1965. You people act like he played 300 years ago. He was not as big as most of the DL. In fact there were 300 lbs DL before he even played. As I have said a zillian times on these forums he was both bigger and faster than W. Payton & E. Smith. A. Peterson was under 230 lbs, E. Campbell was at 230 & Csonka was about 235. Now explain to me how JB would not have been superior to all those guys when they played.
Earl Campbell was the greatest power back of all time. There are greater running backs but not any better in sheer power. the run in which he runs over the Rams defensive player and steps on is chest is legendary. For just sheer power alone I would choose him first then the Bus then Alstott and then probably Henry or Riggins.
Not sure why AP isn't on the lost. Dude was the most versatile runner I have ever seen. Agility with the best of them, breakaway speed like nobody else in the league at the time besides maybe CJ2K, and literally steam rolled guys like Jerome Bettis. I don't think a single defensive coordinator for an 8 year stretch went into Minnesota with any sleep from 2007-2015.
I was glad to see Henry and Okoye both on this list. Not taking away from anyone else on the list but they in my opinion they are tops in each of their era's and definitely deserve to be here.

No way. Brown is so overrated as a power back. He had genius level skills in traffic. Similar to Warrick Dunn. The way he leveraged his body with angles and twists. But the commentator is drunk. Brown evaded most defenders, and most of the rest seemed to not know how to tackle. Today brown might be cut.
And Earl Campbell was one of the best Tailbacks in history. He ran a 9.6. Had great vision and elusive skills. He would be all pro at 200 lbs

I know he wasn't around long to put up astounding career numbers, but Bo Jackson definitely deserves a mention. That guy was the closest thing we ever had to an actual superhero.
The Diesel was unbelievable. Has more yards after 30 years old than in his 20’s.
Derrick Henry is the only running back I've ever seen do his own down field blocking.
My main gripe with not handing the ball off to Lynch is, I get it you don't want to be too predictable, and even the best back still get tackled... but how could you not at the very least run a play action, just to get the defense to jump a little and give your receivers a slightly better chance at being open for a TD. Yes they should have handed the ball off, and everyone was expecting it, and yet you can't even fake it which would have helped.
Good list. I was a young child when Campbell was at UT. I remember listening to the games on the radio. Then watching him with the Oilers was one of my greatest childhood memories. He punished defenses. Too bad his body could not have held up a few more years.
Nice to see Jayhawk John Riggins on the list. They don't often have a good team, but when the stars align they spawn legends. He and Gale Sayers are two of the best backs to ever play the game.
Riggins was no joke. In one season, he scored 44 touchdowns.
My personal favorite has always been Marshawn Lynch. Loved watching him play and how hard he was to bring down

Y’all need to look at Pete Johnson. A 270# Nightmare who could also catch the ball. He should definitely be on this list. Dan Bunz tackle of Johnson in the Super Bowl is considered one of the greatest tackles in NFL. History. He literally broke his nose and blew out his ear drums tackling Johnson. Pete was definitely more feared than several selections to this list.

Many props!! Great list. There are some coaches who totally think outside the box. Bum Phillips once tried to get Riggins as Campbell's blocking/ number two back. Also, if I remember correctly, it wasn't so much his record, it was that Brown thought Harris was soft.
Exactly correct about Jimmy B's opinion of Franco. Franco started that running out of bounds mess that is so prevalent in the NFL today.

Jim Brown was great for his time but he played when defensive linemen were much smaller. At 230 lbs. and 6’ 2” he was as big as most of them. So unlike many of the other power backs whose opposing linemen average 280 and up just maybe he shouldn’t be number one on this list.

Now explain to me how JB would not have been superior to all those guys when they played.

Earl Campbell was the greatest power back of all time. There are greater running backs but not any better in sheer power. the run in which he runs over the Rams defensive player and steps on is chest is legendary. For just sheer power alone I would choose him first then the Bus then Alstott and then probably Henry or Riggins.
Not sure why AP isn't on the lost. Dude was the most versatile runner I have ever seen. Agility with the best of them, breakaway speed like nobody else in the league at the time besides maybe CJ2K, and literally steam rolled guys like Jerome Bettis. I don't think a single defensive coordinator for an 8 year stretch went into Minnesota with any sleep from 2007-2015.
I have watched all those players play during their time. Just so amazed there are so many great ones.
