  • The second half of our first night at The Franklin for 2020 things got even better with Russ Maddin sharing his big ugly Boogie Woogie. This fly is designed to attract all those big monster trout that lurk after dark. We've all heard of mousing in the dark but few anglers branch out to imitate the other "night occurrences" like Dobson Flies. So grab your gear and tie up a few these for those nights after the hex when your spider senses are tingling and something tells you fishing might be good.

Russ is the best. There are very few people I want to tie and fish with more than Russ. Guy has been really good to me, and his tying is legit. He's pretty laid back, but is a great teacher.

@@TheNorthernAnglerFlyShop yea Russ is that guy. I saw a scheduled event with another guy I know, Alex Lafkas coming up. That should be fun.

Damn. he did it again! When Russ tied in the piece of foam, I'm going, "He's done, and this is the first time EVER that Russ hasn't crowded the head". WRONG!! He then proceeds to tie in 3 more materials! He is the master of the "Thumb Push". He always seems to squeeze in a lot more, even when it looks like he is out of Real Estate.

alright i’ve heard it used a few different ways; what is the michigan definition of boon-dogging a fly ?

Awesome question! When we talk about “boon-dogging” in the context of fly fishing we’re casting a dry fly out of a boat and letting it float downstream ahead of the boat to likely looking water. Others might call it prospecting but either way it’s a great way to find fish looking up for a meal but aren’t actively rising.
