    I’m Lumbee from Robeson County. I’ve been all over the U.S. I’ve been mistaken for Somoian, Mexican, Puertorican, Thai, and African American. All depending on what part of the country you’re in and what folks are use to seeing. But none of that matters to me as long as you know I’m a Christian and I’m trying to make Heaven my home. And it won’t matter what my neighbor there use to be here

    I'm from Oklahoma and have a thick "Okie" accent. I love to hear other accents as it shows the richness of our heritage. Having an accent doesn't make one dumb. As Forest Gump said "stupid is as stupid does". So if a person having an accent, such as mine, doesn't do stoopid stuff, they aren't stoopid.

    Haters will only write what's in their heart. Indigenous peoples in the Americas come in all colors. Our ancestors fed the Europeans and taught them how to survive. When they first arrived.Then they took our lands, they then attacked our Culture and language. They mixed with us when it was convinient now the descendants of Europeans who have only been in this continent for few hundred years deny our indianess because we are mixed. We have ancestor who have been here for thousands of years.

    I checked out a book on Lumbee history and it is so interesting! The Lumbee tribe was (according to historical evidence) likely 3 tribes that merged in the wake of colonialization. They used English as a way to communicate between tribes, that and the discrimination natives who spoke their language faced likely lead to its extinction but they still have a unique dialect and words. The Lumbee tribe also accepted runaway slaves. They haven't been federally recognized, not because of a lack of historical evidence but because of prejudice since they didn't fit the native stereotype (teepees, feathered headdresses etc) and because they lost their languages early on, which happened to many first contact tribes. I'm seeing some ppl claim the Lumbee arent native because they aren't federally recognized. Please educate yourself.

    I am a black man that is a descendant of the croatian /lumbee tribe. My great grand mothers mother was named Ellen Robeson Cunningham. We have pictures of her, she was one of nine siblings who had been sent to Alabama in the late 1850's. Ellen became a slave and was married three or more times and had children by three different husbands due to being separated and relocated. Let me set the record straight, many run away slaves were welcomed into the Lumbee tribe. And any European mixed with black and native American may look like Louisiana creole, Puerto Rican or any mixed culture. they all have an identity.

    The man speaking about Heather Locklear not being a Lum...this is part of the reason the Native American people was destroyed.Its incredibly sad to know that all Native Americans, whether Cherokee, Chickasaw etc, couldnt put their differences aside and ban together as a whole to fight those who intended to destroy them as a whole. The blood that flows through our veins...this country has torn us apart, dont continue to do the same to those wanting to find their hidden past.

      11 years late to this party, the reason people couldn't put aside everything to fight Europeans is because 100's of years of history dealing with people vs brand new people who had maybe never done you wrong yet. There is no overarching racial component to the systems and histories of tribes until the US government and Canadian government try to force it into that frame. Why would my tribe put there differences aside to push away the french who married them and learned the language, why would they push them away? Why would they not ally with the french against their enemies like they did? There was no "native American" there was community identities tied to language and culture and location

      @@DatYungPrinc3 Sure, Okay let's be 100% honest here lumbees have no language and no belief system they can hold up historical archaeology. On top of this predominantly the community when DNA tested was 60+% African and 22+% European with most being 2% or less Native American.
      What does this all mean? They are undeniably NOT I Native American Tribe in any shape fashion or form.
      The other things that hurt them so much as the fact that they changed their name 6 times since 1911 they called themselves Croatan, Cherokee, Cheraw, Indians of Robeson County, Siouan and now Lumbee.
      So if they're actually a tribe why continuously change your name trying to get Federal recognition???
      This is very simple it's all for money. Don't let them fool you into thinking they just want recognition. They won't the federal land that they'll be given along with the casinos they can put on it so that they can make money that's what this is about. Accept it will never happen because they're not Native American as their DNA clearly shows. They are African and European mixed along with Asian Indian with an average across the board who have tested that are 2% or less Native American.
      The "tribe" participated in a genealogy DNA test. The above percentages we're across the board. It showed that Lumbees are African mixed Europeans. A simple google search will yield those test and will Ancestry.com were Lumbee after Lumbee state that they aren't Native American or are 2% or less.
      On top of this scientifically, archaeologically and through anthropology the Lumbee have no language, beliefs or tradition. They once claimed Lost Colony heritage until 1911.
      Everything they do is stolen or copied from real tribes, mainly the Cherokee.
      Let's not forget that they claimed they were Cherokee. But that was proven to be completely 100% false. Do it would be hard for them to give up all this stuff that they said was their heritage when it wasn't. So they just kept on with the lie.

    • @adamhovey407
      @adamhovey407 3 роки тому +6

      Yeah I don't get it. The truth is, is a lot of "full-bloodeded" Indians, are part white or part black, this is especially true with the Cherokee Nation, and contrary to what some Eastern band Cherokee think, them too. Just because you have a certificate degree of Indian blood that says 4/4, doesn't make it true , the government hasn't always kept records of that. A good example of this would be the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. The tribe itself is mixed, this is not a secret to anyone, but you have to be a minimum of one-quarter to enroll in said tribe. Now, the way they describe someone as a quarter, is they made a roll, and everyone on that roll, is full-blooded, even if they're really not. Since there are so many tribes made up of nothing but mixed race people, I'm really hoping that the certificate degree of Indian blood is going to be a thing of the past. You shouldn't think of people in percentages, you can't prove or disprove someone's Indian Heritage by DNA, because that doesn't take culture into account. I don't care how much Indian blood Lumbees have or don't have, I think that they are culturally Indian.

    • @adamhovey407
      @adamhovey407 3 роки тому +5

      @@reds7vn644 It's interesting you mention that, because there are some words that are clearly Siouan that seem to be related to Saponi, that some Lumbee seem to know. I just want to point out that Catawba is extinct, but no one is going up to Catawba and telling them that they're not really Indian because they don't have a language, and most of them are Mormon. just because the Bureau of Indian Affairs hasn't declared a group is Indian, doesn't mean they aren't Indian, remember the Bureau of Indian Affairs is telling them t that they already exist as a tribe, not making new ones. Although, as I read the petition from the Miami nation of Indiana and the rejection of the Federal recognition, I find the whole thing kind of suspect. Especially since the Miami Nation of Indiana has a treaty with the US government. Seriously, it seemed like the Miami, who are mostly Catholic, were denied Federal recognition, on the basis of not having their own church. There are groups of Cherokee in the Southeast, that can verify that they have a tribal government and have since before removal, that will never get Federal recognition because of the Cherokee Nation and the Eastern band of Cherokee Indians. The Lumbee certainly have the odds stacked against them , but the Monacan Indian Nation was given Federal recognition through legislation, and they have a harder time documenting Indian Heritage than the Lumbee, of course a lot of that was a racist name Walter Ashby Plecker, but still. I don't doubt that the Lumbees have black and white ancestry, and the truth is that a lot of times Indian ancestry is just not going to show up on a DNA test, but that doesn't change someone's culture, Lumbees have an Indian culture, not having their own language or their own religion isn't really that different than other Indian tribes. The Cherokee Nation has members that are 1/4096 Indian, but according to the Cherokee Nation and the federal government they're Indian, Do you really think that's going to show up on a DNA test?

The lady that was speaking, I can tell you right now that she did not say "When he got halfway" she actually said "When it got halfway" but they pronounce "it" like "hit". They don't say "it" they say "hit" and I only know that because I grew up in Robeson County. So she actually said "When hit got halfway" not "When he got halfway". Hit means It.

    There are Lumbees that are not mixed much, if at all. My family is from Lumberton, but I met a mother & grown daughter years ago in the Triad of NC, who I could tell were Native American. When I asked politely what nation they were part of, expecting to hear Sioux or at least Cherokee, they said Lumbee. The daughter was smoking hot with long black hair & the mother looked like she came out of a John Wayne western. I guess they saw my surprise at their answer and said with a laugh, "Yeah, I think we are the last of the pure Lumbees." So to anyone who says they are not real Indians because they did assimilate and mix with the culture around them, I say you are an uninformed bigot.

    The Lumbee people definitely deserve recognition for their culture and language, but to say that I am not Lumbee because my parents lived far away from Robeson County and never taught me about Lumbee culture is just wrong on so many levels and reeks of selfish motives. The Lumbee have long struggled to attain their cultural identity in the eyes of the law, primarily because other NC Native tribes have sought to exclude the Lumbee. Now Lums in this video seek to exclude other Lumbee descendants because that are not as Lum as they are. How is that not racism? Has your struggle taught you nothing?

    This DOES sounds like Gullah. I'm from Georgia, and growing up I heard older Black men and women talk just like this. I talk like this a little bit. I've done as much Research about this "tribe" as I possibly could (Because my mother is originally from Robeson Co. and she told me that my Great Grandmother was Lumbee). I dont care to try to be accepted into the tribe, but I was curious about it. All my research from difference sources said the exact same things... They tried to claim to be a apart of various tribes. Im confused. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?!

    • @lumbee1986
      @lumbee1986 9 років тому +9

      I'm lumbee and I may can help, the lumbee is a name bestowed in 1954, in an attempt to unify a unique name for us, it was also a nail in a coffin to any chance of every receiving federal benefits from recognition. Before the name we were tuscarora, allot still claim that, we are an amalgamation of different tribes with black, white, and possibly Portuguese blood with the majority of blood being skarure (which is tuscarora, but pronounced how it was originally). As far as the similarities with gullah, I'm not sure because when I first came to Charleston and heard the gullah accent it sounded nothing like my lumbee accent but I can tell you we never try and be anything else besides natives from Robeson county. All the name changing had a purpose, maybe an ill advised plan but there was a point to it, hope this helps.

      black undertones in skin, i have eyes.. very full lips and wider nostrils , those are NOT characteristic of native americans as my dad was over 1/2 native, he looks like the Cherokee and Apache , he looks full blooded.. so no way do the native americans have black skin or undertones of such but RED skin, compared to whites our skin is actually RED..... no they have straight black hair (natives).
      but some of the Lumbees do have afro hair and some straight,, they have Portuguese or something else, dna has Nigerian blood. that wikipedia has %'s and about 1/2 white and 1/2 black in Robeson and closeby areas... 1/2 % native americans reside in Robeson (and areas)... so they are mixed races w/ blacks, dna states such, how much I figure would depend on each person's gene pool, but many have the features of black people, I have eyes, i saw videos and photos, so it comes down to tribal heritage, anyone can say they are native american ... if you don't legally belong to a tribe , then you are Native American , period.
      freedom of speech USA..
      people we are not saying you don't have a band of peoples who connect but you gotta play by the rules, each tribe has rules to enter , blood quantum. any pack of people can band together and have a tribe.... but to be a legal native american , research your own heritage , proof is on birth certificates and NAMES ...

But to deny someone their heritage, or to think you know what one has been through, just because they arent apart of your community is very hurtful to those of us that have lived a life of not even knowing what we were.
