- This is a slide show I made for my dad, Robert Dolan. It is a collection of postcards and pictures from our many trips to the Outer Banks and Nags Head for his work during the 1960's and 70's. If you are interested in learning more about my dad check out this story published in UVAToday.

The outerbanks will always hold a special magic in my heart back in the 1970's when I enjoyed great fishing and good times.

Wonderful presentation! Really moved me. The Outer Banks back in the 70s and early 80s was magical. Hardly anyone there because few people knew about it, remnants of old sunken ships on the shoreline, wide open surf spots. For a child it was a world of imagination. You'd go to the beach and look north and south and literally not see a soul, only the piers. There were more shells on the beach too. There were so many shells where the waves met the beach at the tide line it was hard to walk because the shells hurt your feet. I think the rising seas have taken a lot of the shells. There were only a few rental homes too. Huge family seafood meals, local farmers would come to your home and sell corn on the cob and vegetables. It was idyllic and wild. The homemade fudge, taffy, and unique art galleries made the Outer Banks back then unlike any other place on the East Coast, maybe unlike anywhere else in America. There was an art gallery in a building that looked like a pirate ship. The Outer Banks is still ok now, but nothing like what it used to be. Capt'n Franks was just a shack with absolutely nothing around it. The by-pass was only two lanes and you had to drive through drifting sand. It was really remarkable and made my childhood magical.

This video made me cry. I grew up in Norfolk va and my family and I had many happy visits to Nags head. We fished on Jeanette pier, swam, had great times. As a teenager, my best friend and I and other friends frequented the Casino. What a blast we had. Now my family is gone and to look at this video made me sad because it brought back memories

Used to stay at the Sand Dollar. Miss it! No other beach vacation is really the same.
We stayed at the San Dollar too!! OBX has lost it's charm.
started staying there in 1958 when I was 6. loved the Sand Dollar & Jackson homes which was right next door. still go there 59 years later. great video for us oldtimers.

That was the result of the Ash Wednesday Storm in March 1962.
A simpler and better time ,a love to go back and no desire to go forward.
That was really neat. I started going down to the outer banks in the mid-70's as a young teen. So many of those pictures bring back such wonderful memories ... bonfires on the beach, riding our bikes up the middle of Rt 12 into Duck; the unbelievable stars you could see on a clear night ... no lights around to inhibit your view. No TV, just swimming, fishing, bike rides, ice cream and Dowdy's amusement park for a special "night out". Very special memories. I'm blessed to have known the Banks that way.

My first visit to Nags Head was with my parents and my sister in 1963. The bypass was two lanes. We went back every summer after that and the place will always hold a special place in my heart. I was raised there as were my kids, as well as my sister's kids. After my Mom died, my dad moved there and I was able to spend some very special time with him in his beachfront cottage. The last time I was in Nags Head was in 2014 for his funeral. I'm hoping to go back soon. It is and will always be a place of magical memories. Thanks so much for posting this.
Thank You. It seems like yesterday our family would go camping there , even before they built the bypass road..it was made of military tank tracks. Dad would fuss about who would buy a bunch of sand for $50 an acre. Yes times have changed...but in a way... I still liked the 50's and 60's better

My dad bought a house here around 1976 and growing up I spent every summer in Nags Head. It's changed so much since then, but it's still beautiful and is my favorite place in the world.
That was my family's cottage across from The Casino. My Grandfathers hotels .. The Carolinian and The First Colony!! THANK YOU for bringing back so many wonderful memories!!
I discovered this video because I was searching for old footage of The Carolinian. Is there a documentary or historical paper out there dedicated to the old splendour of The Carolinian in its heyday? I loved that place and it broke my heart when it was torn down.
@@kimrespess6580 😀I spend a lot of weekend at The Carolinian back just before it closed I still miss it had some great times there wish I could live them over again
@@alexhollowell6060 Even though it had seen its day, just for nostalgia, my husband and I spent our honeymoon night there. A couple of years later, we went back to Nags Head for a weekend, and they had started tearing it down. My heart sank as I gathered 1 brick that I use as a bookend. We have not been back to OBX since then - not just because of the Carolinian, but we moved out of NC to the western part of SC and it was no longer a quick trip. It's nice to hear from someone that shares my sentiment. Thanks..
@@kimrespess6580 it has really changed a lot since then there is a very few old mom and pop motels left most have been bought up and big hotels or 8+ bedroom cottages there now
This is really awesome - thanks for sharing it! The name Robert Dolan seemed very familiar to me as I was reading your description above. I read the UVA in memoriam and sure enough, I had used a lot of his work as a reference source for some of my college research in coastal geology and erosion issues in 1980/81 at GWU. I remember referencing a book or some published study he did - it was a gold mine for what I was into at the time! On a side note - my family vacationed at Nags Head every year since I was a baby in 1959. The 60's and 70's were surely the glory years there and miss the way it was a lot.
Thanks for the note, Jim. My dad was very prolific and always full of new ideas to test out. As a go-for for him, this led to some crazy predicaments and amazing memories. Once we were studying the impact of the small emerita crabs on the beach erosion rates, these little crabs were found usually a couple of inches in the sand at the waterline. Well, my dad invented this tool to extract enough sand to capture and count these crabs, starting about 12 feet from the shoreline. Imagine this tool... it looked like a pogo stick made of PVC that had about a 10-inch opening. We would plant this in the sand, use the pogo handles to drive it into the sand securing a sample of sand that we would put into a sifter. We would sift the sand leaving the crabs which we would then count. Long story short, he would keep telling us (me and my brother) to keep going further out until we were right where the waves were crashing onshore. There was a rogue wave that hit me mid pogoing that knocked my and the tool into the water. This episode may not sound as funny now, but it is a memory I will never forget! I have been going down to OBX since 1962 and agreed they with the 1970s were the glory days - it is not the same anymore, but I still love going there.
The house at:53 is still there! It's called The Way We Were! I've stayed there several.

You picked the right song for this - it's among my favorites! It's one of the most beautiful songs ever sung. For those who don't know it, it's "Both Sides Now" sung by Judy Collins in 1968.
Thank you - Judy Collins was on heavy rotation back in the day. “Both Sides Now” was on the same album and is amazing too.
That brought back some memories. I spent many a night at the Pebble Beach Motel and fishing on Jennette's Pier. Great times!
I spent a lot of time at Sandspur - we used to fish on Jennette's Pier and play a lot of pinball.

Old memories linger, but the place is long gone ! The best times were in the 50's 60's ,and even up to the 70's! Now it's just a well manicured ,and congested tourist trap !
I don’t get down there much anymore but last I was there a lot of the magic was gone.
Nags Head is my MOST favorite place in the world! Thanks for sharing your beautiful postcards and pictures.

Thank you, Sara - since my dad studied the outer banks we spent time there throughout the year. During the high season, as well as when there was only one restaurant open. I've been going there since the early 1960s. Since I live in New York these days, I haven't been able to get there often, but it is still my spiritual home. It is funny - during this crazy crisis someone asked me to close my eyes and imagine the place that makes me the happiest, and it was the Outer Banks. I thought of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse before they moved it, looking at it from just to the south. It is a beautiful image.
@@Shindig99 Thank you for responding! We started going there for vacation in 1964! We would camp and my dad would surf fish while my mom and us kids walked the beach collecting shells and building sand castles. At night we would go to the beach and have a small campfire, My dad would tell us all the stories about the shipwrecks, pirates and ghosts of the beach. My Aunt had a cottage there. I can't remember the name of the road it was on. We stayed there a lot. It was called the "Pink House" and the row of houses were all painted pretty bright but pastel colors. The houses looked a lot like the one you posted! We visited all the wonderful places there and ate at every restaurant. Spent a lot of time in the souvenir shops and had a blast with my dad when we were a little older at the Casino! It was the most wonderful childhood anyone could have. Thank you for sharing all the photos it truly blessed my heart to see them. My heart is always there.

Good slide show. I grew up just over the sound bridge in Currituck. Worked on the OBX a few years, fish and enjoyed there for decades. Still do, I was there last week. During the winter months most places closed until spring. The bypass road use to be a small 2 lane road. During the winter you could be driving down the bypass and not see a car for several miles, no one behind you and not see a car approaching from the front, you would be the only vehicle on the road for miles. Now with it being all built up and the bypass 4 lanes, The winter time traffic now, is more than the summer time traffic at peak season back then.

i am 65 years old now i have stayed in most of those old motels and there is only a very few left sad to see all the changes most not for the better
Thanks for the note - I haven't been to Nags Head in quite a while. I wasn't too excited about the direction it was going. It is sad to hear that more of that history is disappearing.

Thank you Courtney - I have such a deep love of the outer banks - my dad was a scientist whose major research was conducted there. I basically grew up there - that is me the little blond haired kid on Jockey’s Ridge.

We went there on a family trip around July 1971 when I was 5 & I had a blast! We drove down the coast from NY. We stayed in a small, cute Cottage or Hotel & those awesome Sand Dunes really stuck out! I remember seeing this band perform under a Tent one evening with this girl playing a Tambourine-it was intense! It'd be interesting to know what those musicians are doing now but this is a great vid,great place I have to re-visit before I die!

Love the slideshow. Thanks for sharing. South Nags Head around Mile Post 17 is my favorite are to stay down there. I was just there a month ago in May 2017. It's getting over crowded with to many stores now. There are way to many Wings souvenir shops. The place called the Ship Wreck is my favorite.

Great slideshow ..I remember the Nags Head sites passing through going to Buxton in the 70's The article about Dr Dolan's life and research was very interesting. I will read more. It has always seemed to me that shifting coastlines are a natural fact played out over the ages, and instead has turned into some fake environmental crisis to be used to scare people into giving up their freedom. I miss those days. Now its over crowded. Crime and drugs are everywhere now. Although i live close. I dont go anymore

I know this video is years old, but does anyone remember the potato chip factory? I think we began going to the OBX in the 80’s and always went to the chip factory for snacks. They made the best chips and some kind of cheese snack.
We really enjoyed going to the OBX . Stayed in different places most years, Nags Head, Duck, Southern Shores…… beautiful, peaceful place.
A year-by-year slide show from the early 70s to early 80s would be interesting when it morphed from primarily mom & pop motels to primarily rentals. I'd like to see a photo of the Peabody's T-Shirts store.

Sea Spray Hotel? Sand Dollar I remember. Evans Market. We could catch big crabs off the docks are Oregon Inlet by lowering a string with a piece of fish on it. We were there two weeks in August from 1956 to add bout 1962. Thanks for the memories.
Thanks for your comment - I remember when after September, there were only one or two restaurants that were open and only a couple of stores. You had to go to Manteo if you wanted to buy more than the essentials.
@@Shindig99 That sounds like the old days. I remember our first cottage way down near the turn to Oregon Inlet, the water from the kitchen spicket shocked us, so my brothers and I would make a conduit by holding hands to shock the last in line. We climbed Jockey Ridge barefoot and that burned. I think the Ink Spots played at the Casino. Dad and I lucked into a school of blues surf fishing in Hatteras.
Nice! Where were the Foosball Palace and the Atlantis located? I'm pretty sure they were right next to each other.
I think they were both around milepost 12. Over the years I graduated from Fooseball Palace to Atlantis :)
@@Shindig99 Thanks. Yes, I sort of remember my high school and college years. I just found a photo, and they were around milepost 11.5 adjacent to the Nags Head Pier. The 1980s are looking really good these days!
First visit was in the late 70s. I go back every year. (sometimes twice a year) Newman's remains my all time favorite place. My daughter picked up a fish made of sand there and it is upstairs right now. Things have changed so much. Lots of "monopoly" houses on the beach now... but still my favorite place to go. Thank you for posting!

I was so sad when they tore Newman’s down. My aunt had a seashell-filled table lamp from there.
President Roosevelt stayed once in one the the old o/front shown here....that strip of beach is referred to as the Old Aristocracy??? spelling?

Avon Pier. A Spot under a freelined float. Great for Kings, and Sharks.

Back in the early 70's it was a Dry County.
I remember that too - not that I could drink back then but I remember my parents buying beer in Norfolk (we also bought most of our provisions there) before heading down.
