Reducing Pine Bark Beetles & Tractor Getting Old
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- I discovered a situation with my old logging tractor. It’s a Massey Ferguson MF 30 MF 34 with a Farmi logging winch. I also discovered another situation with some pine bark beetles. We will be taking some steps to reduce the pine bark beetle population. A part of forest management on the West Coast involves dealing with pine bark beetles. The beetles can breed in fresh cut slash and logs, or storm damage. From there they can spread to live trees. We will be trying to prevent the pine beetles from spreading to other trees.

Ashes to ashes and rust to dust...we all return from the earth from which we where fashioned from, rest in peace rusty can .
Your thoughtful, efficient approach is an inspiration. Just how I imagined operating my own forest stewardship, and I have the privilege of watching someone else do it first!
It's been said that: One should always rather catch the can than kick it...
The dreaded Ips beetles in the Ponderosa pines; I hate 'em as much as Poison oak, if that's possible.
The "Tree School" OSU-Extension folks REALLY need to get you and your winching savvy on the curriculum.
Another likeroo from your neighbour to the North.
I hate the ips even more than poison oak. Maybe the OSU folks could just point them to my winching videos. it might be fun to get on their curriculum though.
The can gave its life in the service of humanity, my hat is off to it.
I like your video style. Learn a little, laugh a lot. Keep them coming and sharing your wisdom and musings.
Thanks for sharing more of your work methods. I can see where a snatch block helps prevent tree damage while skidding.
That can could be monetized to the highest bidder. 🙂 Keep up the great videos on the channel. Love watching them.
I actually thought about that, maybe time to auction the can. 😁
That can bit is one of my favourite parts of this channnel. Simple yet effective.
Ips bark beetle appeared to by your culprit. They make straight lines, Y, I and H appearing intersecting lines.
Yep those are ips. I mentioned while making the video but the audio didn’t record.
So we don't have a cliffhanger but you kicked the can into the next video 😂
Yeah I kind of did kick the can into the next video. 😁
Those chainsaw chaps of yours have shown how much you've grown over the years. 😁Time for a new set.
Actually, they come in different lengths. Not just juvenile and adult. 😊
I like the higher ones because they are less of a trip hazard getting tangled up in things. But still cover the high probability injury areas.
Life is short. Blow the can off your stack, every chance you get. ;^)
I like these videos in the forest. It's so calm and peaceful.
Your tractor does a great job. Why don't loggers use low profile crawlers on hillsides?
Hey!, you remembered to lift the winch! 😁🤣 Is there a particular variety of soup that makes better exhaust cans?
I don’t remember what the original can was. The new one is refried beans. So far I haven’t noticed a difference in performance. In another 15 years or so we will find out which one held up the best.
my uncles had the rain caps on their tracker riddled all the time they found one for the chimney for the sawmill steam power that was fun to watch too lol they had to open it before they started the fire to get smoke out if we did not do it get i burning we let the flapper go then know when we need to put more wood in the fire too with it on
The child's story about the train could be changed to your tractor.... "I know I can, I know I can" 😅
That reminds me of a video I did a couple years ago using my dad‘s Ford Ranger to yard logs. I think the title of the video was something like the little Ranger that could.
I have been looking for a way to contact you. I am interested in buying firewood. Will you please tell me where/how to contact you.
Thank you

As a land owner dealing with rotten based trees from loggers dragging logs against other trees, being mindful to protect good trees for the future makes you a good Stewart of the land! 👍👏
Something squeaky in that winch need a little lubrication.
The chain is ready for some lube. Some of the squeaks come from the drum brake.
When you sell boards with bug tunnels sell them for more money it’s extra work to get it like that.
That might be a good angle. 😁
Get yourself one of those flap toppers for the tractor exhaust.
It cost a bit more than a free can, but it keeps the rain out, AND brings a pleasant tapping sound at a low idle.
In thick woods you wont wonder where you left the tractor anymore.
I have a flap topper on my cat. It makes a nice flapping noise while the engine is cranking over.
I already made the decision before even this video.
If I were to come into some "financial success", I would have that tractor restored and upgraded, during the winter.
So you would be stuck with it for another 30 years.
I like that tractor.
I have so many questions 😳. How much land is it? How much did it cost? Is there a comfortable profit from selling the lumber to offset the cost of the land? Been binge watching the channel and really enjoy the content 👍🏻
This is 160 acres. I bought it somewhere around 25 years ago when real estate prices were a lot lower. Right now it might cost about 5 times as much to buy it. The price of land has increased much more than the price of wood. Today it’s difficult to find a piece of land you can buy around here and get it to pay off from the wood on the land. Not impossible but hard. You bring up good questions and it’s a little complex to answer the milling profit side here, it may be a good video topic.
@@WilsonForestLands Thanks for the reply! Looking forward to more content :)
I came for the logging education, but stayed for the new shiny can.
Great video as always!
Hey I've got the same tractor. Just moved 174 bales of hay with it.
Atleast you remembered to raise the winch this time. Good job.
Must be a heavier can, didn't fly as far.
I think I’ve mentioned in an older video I run plastic coffee cans now.
I was enjoying this video to
G'day Mike I need a new can for my MF35 they didn't have one at the parts store 🤔👍.
Good work champ !
Looking forward to your next video, Wilson
Hello, I thought you have to wait until the beetles are dormant to cut on that stuff?
Great to know you can still get spare parts for that old tractor 😉
I think I can, I think I can. I did not know the beetles ate the bark and that killed the tree. I thought it was larvae eating the cambium layer. I have spudded off the bark and found hundreds maybe thousands of larvae. Interestingly enough they are all gone in the morning when I go to move the bark to the burn pile. I think the fox, or the skunks eat them. I would love a beetle live cycle story please.
Yeah it’s the larva eating the cambium and layers under the bark. The adults were in there too. I’m not sure if those were the adults who laid the eggs or if those are the new adults getting ready to fly. There was a little mishap with the video where I showed the larva and explained those are Ips beetles.
Go Medieval on those bugs?- “ with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch”!😁
I wasn’t sure how many people would catch that reference. 😂 On the last bugs I used fire and a D6 cat, not sure what I’m going to use this time.
I love your truck!!
I agree
Happy new can , may you have many more in the years to come.
Some beans WERE harmed in the procurement of a replacement can.
Yep, refried beans to be exact.
I always enjoyed watching you catching that can. I guess it doesn’t take much to me happy. I for one am going to miss that old can. Hopefully I can find it in my heart to appreciate that new can as much as the old can. Kind of like replacing an old dog with a new one. He won’t be the same but you love him anyway.
It’s so gratifying to watch you continue to figure out life, you’re a true inspiration and gem 💎 in my life!!!
Awesome job. I absolutely love your sense of humor. Stay safe, and God bless
I hate cliffhangers. Anybody know what the other issue is? 🤔
Yeah good question, anyone know?
@@WilsonForestLands
Yeah… you funny guy. 😆
Long live the can.
I noticed you caught the can left- handed. Thumbs up for that.
Ya know, for a logger/ miller/ forestry manager/ wildlife photographer/ you’re a pretty good storyteller. I never would have thought I would have been interested in a can story.
Thank you for that. While doing it I was thinking, seems a little silly to be spending this much time beginning a video by talking about a can. 😂
