This sir is the most important video you have every made. I just recently changed my grip after playing golf for 20+ years. What you are saying on this video is absolutely true. Not only will your shots be more consistent they will all be so much longer. I would like every new golfer and old golfer struggling with distance to watch this video and take it to heart. Mr. short game thank you for this wonderful gift of a video.
Totally agree. For the longest time i was hitting such trash shots and i couldnt figure out what the heck was going on. I came across this video and i was like maybe its my grip? And just the slighest adjustment fixed most of my problem. Unreal how the smallest problem in your geip can mess everything up so bad.
I literally do this every time, so when I came across this video I had to watch. I made this one little change, although uncomfortable to me at first, and after one range session I was squaring up balls 100x better than ever before and consistently straight! Thank you for this simple demonstration, it has helped immensely 🍻🤙🏻
That was the greatest tip after 55 years of playing golf. My right hand was always on the third row of finger grip. I moved it today for the first time on the second row of finger grip. Went back to overlap on my pinkie fingers. WOW what a difference it made. All my shots went at least 15 yards further. I was releasing the club through the shot. Thank you very much. I can’t wait to practice. I never had a bad shot all day. It was unbelievable. Thanks again. I will have to go back and view the rest of your videos. Keep up the good work. .
This is incredible advice. I've put it into play for the last 3 rounds. I just shot a 75, my low for the year...an improvement of 3 strokes this season. My long irons have significantly improved. Much thanks!
Dude, I did this today and my God it is a true revelation. I was always using 1st pads on my trailing hand and not receiving it like he teaches here. Hit the best shots of my life today by far, finally some real golf long iron, wood and Driver shots will be in my game!
Moe Norman in a video says to hold the club in the palm of your hand, never in your fingers and also never interlock your hands, Moe says it gives you more control, so I tried it last year 2020 and it was a game changer for me
Being playing golf at a good level for 40 years, and have never understood "stronger /weaker grip", so thanks, "club face influencer" makes much more sense to me!
Good info mr short game dude. I've been watching for awile . I too was a player with the wrong right hand grip. Your teaching is practical and inclusive. It's made a positive difference in my game ,thank you keep it up!

I literally started fast forwarding through this video and said out loud “bro SPIT IT OUT ALREADY” I’m done watching these videos, it’s like trying to follow the train of thought of an ADHD rodent.
Great video! After playing for some near 40 years and just recently trying to pick up my sticks again ... I "LITERALLY" just started focusing on this in the past two weeks. Fantastic tutorial!!!
I learned from my years as a military flight instructor all students learn differently. But, all responded in a positive manner to demonstration and repetition . What a superb example of that in your lesson on how to properly grip or join your hands with the golf club. I cannot wait to work on this asap. Mahalo from Oahu, Hawaii! Well done.
This is the best instruction Out of all the videos I've seen and I mean I've seen a lot. When you show how to receive the club into your right hand you are going to cure a lot of swings..Thanks
The real reason you want to do this is because of your Right Elbow - the power of your swing, like when throwing a ball, naturally comes (watch yourself throwing in slow motion to see it) when your Elbow LEADS the Hand when throwing - creating an accelerating whipping motion with the hand. Thus, when taking your Right Hand Grip, you want to do so with your Right Elbow in that position so it will more easily find this position in the golf swing. If you do the Reach/Grab technique, your Elbow rotates the wrong way & will rob power potential
So when you're swinging should it feel like your right arm is doing most of the work on downswing? My old swing which is pretty weak and leads to slice always feels like both arms are swinging equally. When messing around with it I've tried holding the club such that it feels like my right arm is doing most of the work. It feels great but usually results in me sending the ball straighter but left. So I've stepped away from that, but perhaps I should stick with it and fix whatever else in my swing is sending it left? I live (and am currently trapped due to COVID) in a city where lessons in English cost $200 so I'm trying to rebuild my swing solely using UA-cam videos like these and figure out what I'm doing wrong.
@@formulaic78 I would suggest you go to the UA-cam Channel of Eric Cogorno - he has an amazing online UA-cam channel of golf swing mechanics that will absolutely help you build knowledge. Basically, if your miss is a weak slice, your control over the clubface being square to your back is completely lacking. Eric has hundreds of videos that will help you understand how to control this with either or both of your left or right hands
For all those who weren't patient enough to get to the theory, you missed out. Makes a lot of sense, and also encourages more of a tucked elbow at impact as well. Thanks man, subscribed.
At 50 I just took up this awesome game. Your videos have been a tremendous help in continuing to improve my game. I can’t wait to take this new tip onto the course since I believe I have been doing this all wrong. Thank you 🙏🏽
Omg, I decided to do this when gripping and I cant believe how flush I hit my irons, just from that. Felt weird and fought through the feeling. It just put me in the slot and proper wrist hinge. Amazing!!!! Subscribed for life. Wow just wow!!!
Been playing off and on for over two decades while only breaking 100 a handful of times. In less than a month of watching this channel I've done it three times in four rounds. Played nine a lot mostly alone to implement your tips until I was ready . You sir have changed my life. Thank you so much. I've never " Hit The Bell " for any channel not even my favs but I'm doing it.
the way you break it down to Crayon stage is brilliant, I've had a PGA pro try and explain grip to me in regards to the right hand and this just made it supa clear thanks MSG golf
I love this guy's style and presentation not to mention he has given me great tips to think about. He always says it as he sees it. Best youtube based advice and instruction. Fun to watch.
I must say in over my ten plus years playing golf I’m always searching for videos on correct grip this is truly the best and straightforward way I have seen it explained. I tried it once so far playing, great results.
Don’t worry about these hateful people. Your delivery is different and is liked by many. Keep doing what you doing. This was my 3rd Video I watched of yours and your energy and delivery alone got me to watch more. Good stuff!
Excellent way of explaining the grip details in a very relatable way. You are my favorite YT golf resource and you have helped my game in more ways. Keep on doing these great videos, Matt.
Single best instruction I have ever received. Put this in effect on the range before my round and WOW. Swing is more free and was crushing the ball all day. Not sure yet, but, I might have changed the carry distance of all my clubs....as in 8-10yds more with my irons. Anxious to see how this small subtle change plays out the entire season. Thank you!!!!
Wow! I worked on this as my swing thought in my set up throughout the round yesterday and smoked the ball the entire round. This is my new pressing thought
Wow! Matt. After playing this sport about 16 yrs now, i finally got a great explanation from you and took many lessons but never knew about right elbow position. I always had a feeling that gripping correctly is the most important part of the game, especially, to be consistent. I cannot wait to start practicing using your gripping technique. Thank you so much Matt for clarifying how to grip the club. I forgot to ask if this is true for when chipping as well?👌👍👍👍👏👏👏🙏
Love it! ...calm down! Recieve the club! This makes so much sense and is such a simple repeatable setup sequence. Elbow crease is up and right shoulder rolls into the right position to reduce an OTT release.
For real, this guy is an amazing teacher. Ive been watching his videos for a little while now, an he just has a gift for explaining things in layman terms.
Thank you for this tip. It has dramatically improved my club ball contact. My distances are back. Crisp contact. Also, my back doesn't hurt. I don't know if it has to do with my grip....but a bucket of 68 balls hit with no back pain or pull. Thank you
It works. I adjusted my grip slightly to accommodate the center pads of the right hand. That coupled to a strong grip on the left gives me that extra control resulting more solid shots-both irons and woods. Thanks.
Best grip advice I have received, ever. It explained my lost distance although my swing speed had not dropped. I took this to the course and immediately saw improvement in ball striking. Thank you.
matt, this episode has literally changed my game, not that I am hitting farther, but after 50 some odd years, my problem of slicing, is now a hook, but the hook for me is somewhat wonderful, and its the grip, being 74, and finally have anyone show me just what the grip is suppposed to be, awesome, thanks.... rick shield screwed by not inviting you also.
I learned about the upper arm position from Eric Cogorno's video After doing what you show here, all my swings went straight and my tempo also improved A very rare topic touched on UA-cam
This tip really clicked in my brain and helped my game so much. With a lighter grip I stopped trying to murder the ball. My ball striking improved a lot after making those adjustments. Thank you!
I dont mean to be so off topic but does any of you know a trick to get back into an instagram account? I stupidly forgot the login password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me
Sometimes more often than not I walk off the golf course wondering what I was doing wrong. Though not sure if I will learn , be insightful as to how to improve, I usually find something to consider to be better. You touch a tender point of frustration when you take your time. You do lead with this presentation, by living through the difficulty’s we all experience when things don’t go right. Bryson can reach a par 4 in one shot. But he can also fail and leave the ball even behind the tee and to the right on some practice green. The deeply discouraging frustrations in golf have to be addressed, endured. Only then can our spirits soar once again.
Thank you young man! I did this today and it made a world of difference. I was striking the ball better and I hit a lot more good shots. Thank you again. keep up the good work
I’m new to this channel and really want this indoor range set-up!! 😁 Love the content. Ordered a new set of clubs for the first time ever. Can’t wait to try his tips!!
Tried this on the range yesterday worked like a charm one of the best, most consistent range sessions I've had, the only thing I think he should mention is. They way he rolls his elbow helps you to reach underneath the club , and allows the heel of your right right to contact the grip between the thumb and finger tips of left hand and to make sure you are keeping that contact through the swing. I really noticed that difference and keeping that contact through the backswing helped me , i could feel it when i would get separation and know that has been a fault of mine off and on for years.
That is the most simplest explanation to sorting out your set up before striking the ball. I seen a few videos on how to grip the club but that's the first vlog I seen on the emphasis of the right hand position and how that can affect your shot/strike!!!
Rough comments here! Goodness, when you consider all the other short and sweet videos he’s done this one is just fine. I would also add if you wanna start making longer, 60 min videos, would be fully welcomed too. Thanks again Matt.
Masterfully done, identified the problem where a lot of people don't know their is a problem (me) reenforce the problem then show the resolve with clear instructions.
I like how he emphasizes the grip as being the most important aspect of golf- because it is. its our only contact with the club and dictates the swing.
...the most important aspect is the scorecard homie, nobody cares how, only how many. Heres something you may not realize: you're not Adam Scott. Stop trying to swing like Adam Scott. 👍 I've been teaching 18 years. At first yeah, I was teaching "let's get closer to perfect" but that doesn't make anyone better (well...not 68 year old retirees anyway). I learned to help people move in a way that makes sense for their bodies. Ever had a lady with very large breasts? It's different is what I'm saying. Don't teach Adam Scott if Adam Scott isn't standing there. What I wish he would say in this video is that there's a reason to do things. For example, he lays the club in his right palm resulting in the club going back inside and open. Why do that? He's got 2 good hands, why remove one? I suspect he fears low and left. He built a swing that makes low left pretty much impossible. That's what everyone does: "just not THAT". Your brain is going to fight whatever pattern you don't like seeing, know that going in. You're throwing darts not performing a dance, nobody cares how...only how many Build something you can repeat...then we'll talk grip.
@@raynorlynn810 You must be a lousy golf teacher. I say emulate a pro who fits your eye and style... and if he has a grip variety you like. Adam Scott has a great classic and fundamental swing to pattern to. But to imitate him it all starts with the grip. get a clue.
Your grip can be perfect but unless you stay in the shot until the ball leaves the club face you will push fade if you lift before impact. If you lift when the ball is on the face pull hooks will be the miserable result. Practice throwing a softball under handed down the target line as far down you can. Do it from a correct golf set up and make sure you're still looking at the divot when the ball has left the face. You'll feel your right shoulder leading your right hand down and under as acceleration carrys the clubface and ball straight down the line. The best advise I ever got was "swing down the line as far as you can" it encourages natural timing, solid contact, acceleration, accuracy and consistency. I started firing dead straight. Watch my boy Fred "Boom Boom" Couples he let's nature do its thing. Seems to work for him 👊 Good luck and good golf my friend 👍
Thank you so much for this tip! I've been struggling to figure out what's wrong with my swing, constantly thinking whether it's my right grip being too strong, too weak, thumb pressing down...etc. At the end, this one tip just got my grip fixed. Hitting 'em straight right after.
Now THIS is golf instruction! Never read or heard this before. And I have been following multiple instructors and have read just about anything you can name.
Very valuable tip... thank you ! I understood why it took long to explain. It was wonderful. It's artistic how you do, you really have a knack for teaching. I completely understood and had a revelation about how I go to grip my golf club... and mind you I'm a fairly decent and experienced golfer! Thank you !
Dude, your a legend! Tried this grip change and got instant results. Hitting solid soft draw shots 🙂. Hitting longer and dispersion is a beauty. Always Faded the ball with inconsistent stikimg until now. Btw this has also helped with chipping. Playing 4 years now, never had any lessons. 19 handicap. Down to 7 thanks to watching your channel. Keep doing your thing. Love the way you deliver your content. You are one funny dude. Thanks for your content.
Thank you so much for the tip. As a beginner golfer, I did take lessons but there is so much to grasp. I kept slicing my clubs. Then I used your tip. I noticed my club face was closed every time I hit my irons and woods at the driving range yesterday. It is good to receive the club than GRAB the club.
Incredible, i tried today, it's a game changer. No longer shots, but better contact and more straight ball flight, and better results in chipping. I was thinking my grip was good, but this shows me it wasn't perfect. HCP 13
Played today. Hit my straightest and longest drives yet except for a couple of dumb misses. Irons and fairways were purer too. The concept of influencing and receiving struck a chord with me. Thanks, Matt.
I’ve did this before, and it felt so much more powerful. Somehow I got away from it, and just sorta starting laying my right hand on top. I’ll be conscious of this the next time I play. Great video!
Much deserved subscription and like from me. This absolutely changed my game! Never knew such a simple fix would cure my short game. I even had pro instructors in Jax Fl couldn’t figure out why the ball was not going farther for me. Everything else was good but not one ever even addressed my grip. I can draw, fade …(on purpose) for the first time in 44years!
I’d been struggling with how to place this hand for a while and recently have been suffering from a sore ring and little finger, like a tendinitis. This solved the problem and after switching to your technique today I felt the difference. Keep up the great tips
Thank you! This is one of the most important tip. This and the the rotation tip single handily helped me be more consistent with my swing! This man has a gift for teaching!
My coach recently told me to change how I hold the club with my bottom hand and this is exactly what he said. It is the easiest way to fix something in your swing but it is also very frustrating because it feels so weird.
This made a huge difference in my game! It turns out I've never been able to square the clubface properly because my right hand didn't work well with my left hand. I made this change and my fade/pull/slice/shank turned into a draw or a toe hit. I've got some dialing in to do, but I feel like I've finally made a change that makes a difference. I feel like my hands are working together and I can swing with authority and confidence. Thanks, Matt!
Have to agree with you. This guy is saying he doesn't care about the left hand for right handers is extremely important. Bad habits occur if you play around with the left hand or right for lefties. The back hand can go where ever it feels comfortable. Basic fundamentals to hit a golf ball. Plus he has an annoying voice.
@@jonathanhowell122 You are correct that nobody forced me to view it but I thought it might be of interest - it wasn't. Typical American over the top stuff. He should calm down a bit and get to the point sooner.

Great tip not sure if I was doing it wrong. But, focused on this in my last 3 rounds and I have found the distance that I thought I lost. Striking my irons much more crisply. Thanks. A full club longer

I stupidly forgot the login password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me
@Zavier Luciano instablaster :)
Thanks for the simple little move I can remember, will try this next time out cheers.
I love the way you go into detail on your videos.Makes it a lot easier to understand.
Tried this today and wow! Got more distance immediately with all clubs as well as improved contact. Thanx!!!
Bro This is probably the tip of the century, 🍻
As in it took a century 😂😂 good tip tho
That is the most simplest explanation to sorting out your set up before striking the ball. I seen a few videos on how to grip the club but that's the first vlog I seen on the emphasis of the right hand position and how that can affect your shot/strike!!!
Rough comments here! Goodness, when you consider all the other short and sweet videos he’s done this one is just fine.
I would also add if you wanna start making longer, 60 min videos, would be fully welcomed too. Thanks again Matt.
Well said William!
Masterfully done, identified the problem where a lot of people don't know their is a problem (me) reenforce the problem then show the resolve with clear instructions.
I like how he emphasizes the grip as being the most important aspect of golf- because it is. its our only contact with the club and dictates the swing.
Like your response. Asked my 4 handicap buddy, on a scale of 1-10, how important is the grip? His response: 11.
...the most important aspect is the scorecard homie, nobody cares how, only how many. Heres something you may not realize: you're not Adam Scott. Stop trying to swing like Adam Scott. 👍
I've been teaching 18 years.
You're throwing darts not performing a dance, nobody cares how...only how many
Build something you can repeat...then we'll talk grip.
@@raynorlynn810 You must be a lousy golf teacher. I say emulate a pro who fits your eye and style... and if he has a grip variety you like. Adam Scott has a great classic and fundamental swing to pattern to. But to imitate him it all starts with the grip. get a clue.
This tip helped me gain 30 yards with driver!!! Something so simple made such a huge difference. Once again, you are the man Mr. short game!!!!!!
Im gonna give this a try I have been having issues with either pulling all the left or pushing it right and it’s been a struggle
@@ryanroberts8260 thank you so much for the feedback it’s greatly appreciate
Thank you !
As always MSG., loved the video and great reminder tip. Btw, I love your new set-up in GA. What a great room.
Sold my clubs after waiting 5 minutes for this guy to get to the point.
Good hope you got a good price.
hahahahaha
The comment winner 😂😂
Thank you so much for the tip. As a beginner golfer, I did take lessons but there is so much to grasp. I kept slicing my clubs. Then I used your tip. I noticed my club face was closed every time I hit my irons and woods at the driving range yesterday. It is good to receive the club than GRAB the club.
Good one, lol. So much to "grasp".
Saw this while taking a dump very helpful after I clean myself I’m going to the golf course, thanks
Incredible, i tried today, it's a game changer. No longer shots, but better contact and more straight ball flight, and better results in chipping. I was thinking my grip was good, but this shows me it wasn't perfect. HCP 13
4:13 is where he finally gets to the damn point!!!!
Played today. Hit my straightest and longest drives yet except for a couple of dumb misses. Irons and fairways were purer too. The concept of influencing and receiving struck a chord with me. Thanks, Matt.
I'm 5 minutes in and have learned nothing. Get to the point. His videos are so long winded
Yep, thought the same. A common fault with many youtubers
Did you see what he did?
Take note of Ms. Larkin, ALWAYS to the point!
Never bury the lead!
Is this Michael from Glasgow?
I’ve did this before, and it felt so much more powerful. Somehow I got away from it, and just sorta starting laying my right hand on top. I’ll be conscious of this the next time I play. Great video!
😂 can you make an hour long version please so it sticks
Coming soon
This is a subtle change, but the result is absolutely amazing. A real game changer. Thanks!
I like how it’s always like you just drank a pot of coffee ☕️😂
Are you sure it’s just coffee?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks ! I did this and I felt that it helped put my trail elbow in the correct position in the down swing.
Love the videos..thanks
Much deserved subscription and like from me. This absolutely changed my game! Never knew such a simple fix would cure my short game. I even had pro instructors in Jax Fl couldn’t figure out why the ball was not going farther for me. Everything else was good but not one ever even addressed my grip. I can draw, fade …(on purpose) for the first time in 44years!
Wish I could have known that 20 years ago. Now I'm used to bad habits already.
I’d been struggling with how to place this hand for a while and recently have been suffering from a sore ring and little finger, like a tendinitis. This solved the problem and after switching to your technique today I felt the difference. Keep up the great tips
That was painful bro. Even the dog was telling you to shut up 🤣
i agree
I’m predicting that this video which within one day has more than 60,000 views will be amongst your more successful videos
Thankyou so much..saw this video, and went to field and tried it and it feels great . Felt so comfortable 😀
half way through and we still haven't got to the point!
Patience grasshopper.
🤯🤯🤯
Even the auto focus was struggling to contain this great tip. Awesome video! Little things can make a big difference 👌🏻
New camera I’m figuring out sorry
I remember when this video started, I was young enough to swing a club…
I think this guy explains things really well. Out of many Instructors on UA-cam , he is right up there.
He obviously likes the sound of his own voice. What a load of waffle!
And yet nobody forced you to view it.
@@jonathanhowell122 You are correct that nobody forced me to view it but I thought it might be of interest - it wasn't. Typical American over the top stuff. He should calm down a bit and get to the point sooner.
@@alvor2762 Search UA-cam for someone that you can relate to, or adjust your critique that is more relevant to the UA-camr and not about you.
@@jonathanhowell122 What the hell are you on about?
Wow wow wow WOW
You explain it so simple you just made so many golfers so much better 👏 👏 👏 little adjustment but big outcome thank you so much
This video should hit million views easy .......
Great tip not sure if I was doing it wrong. But, focused on this in my last 3 rounds and I have found the distance that I thought I lost. Striking my irons much more crisply. Thanks. A full club longer
Exactly the video I needed right now. I’ve been trying to figure out my grip issues lately. This helps, thx!
