I love how people are applauding because the train made its whole journey to lower Manhattan at Brooklyn bridge city hall to Parkchester-pelham bay park it's amazing
The downtown Grand Central Shuttle Track and the track through the City Hall Loop Station are the true connections between today's NYC subway and the day it opened in 1904. The City Hall Loop Station is an irreplaceable jewel.
if you notice, the local tracks at 33rd street are higher than the express tracks. I've seen construction notes that say that it was for a specific reason. The IRT Company wanted local trains to stop as quickly as possible and then get going as quickly as possible. So they built a slight upgrade at that local station and certain others to help the train slow down as it entered the station. Once the train moved again, there was a slight downgrade to help it move again as quickly as possible. I rode the Lex line for years, noticed the difference in grade and never understood why.
I rode the GC curving shutle track to the Lex on a Low-v trip during thek 1960s. Very interesting, to see the remains of the ROW southbound express track, along side. Nice RFW views of the 18th st. and Worth St. stations. Nice video! It puts you right there at the front window. Thanks for posting.
18th Street station was the third subway station to be closed after the city takeover of the subways in 1940. First came City Hall on New Year's Eve Day, December 31, 1945. Then came Court Street on the IND, closed in 1946. 18th Street was closed in 1948. 91st Street then followed in 1959 and Worth Street in 1962.
On the Lex Local stations, you can tell where the original station was by the round stanchions. When the stations were lengthened, they used regular steel stanchions.
I fully understand that the city hall location had to be closed due to security. That said people shoulb be allowed there even if just kept on the train. That's a piece of NYC history that's too good to be kept away.
At 31:26 notice that the local track goes slightly up grade to the 33re Street station, then slightly downgrade leaving the station. This was done to help the original IRT trains slow down to come to a stop and then accelerate to leave the station quickly. Also, I could not see any hint of where the original IRT right-of-way curved to the left to enter what is now the Grand Central Shuttle Station. Thanks for the ride.
The City Hall Loop Station is breathtaking. Too bad more people can't have a chance to see it either in person of from the train. The construction (all arches, completely tiled) could not be duplicated today at any price.
+Cats01 It really is a beautiful space. I would encourage everybody to go to the link I have provided in the description box so they can learn how to view the station.
You can see it from the 6 train as it turns from the downtown platform to the uptown one at Brooklyn Bridge but being inside the station would be breathtaking.
If one were to look at old clips of the Manhattan els, he would find that there were a number of beautiful Victorian style stationhouses with steeples. For instance, the 86th street station on the Second Ave el had a nice streple, almost like a church.
Beautiful station. The fact it couldn’t be replicated today is a direct inditement on how disgustingly inefficient the city and associated construction projects have become. Even with infinitely more advanced digging/construction technology available to us, we cannot do what we once did centuries ago.
At 45 seconds there appears to be windows on the walls of the tunnel ( left side) and a few seconds later overhead doors like garage doors. What’s that about ? One other thing trips like this are for adults . Few people want to hear the kids and their tour guide parents yakking.
I remember back in the day where R118 trains were so common on the 6 line, now they're so rare and there are only the other ones.(I forgot the name of those)
I meen the first part leaving grand central is one of the best parts becasue you are using that tunnle which is never used and to see the rails and what it looks is cool
The City Hall Loop Station doesn't appear to be to be as close to Brooklyn Bridge as it's portrayed. I'll bet workers downtown today would use that station were it available. It was supposed to be the flagship station of the IRT. I wonder whether it couldn't be returned to that status. Problem is the curve is so sharp and the station is so short, it would be impossible to get people safely on and off the trains.
+Cats01 The station can't fit a full 10 car train, and the gap fillers needed to close the gap between the train and the platform would slow down service. On top of that, the staircases open right up in front of City Hall, a security hazard.
Just wondering how they were able to handle bringing trains to the South Ferry Loop for so many years since it technically has similar issues to the City Hall Loop (minus perhaps the security risk). I know gap fillers were added to the SF Loop. Is it that the Lex Av line is more heavily used?
They should have extended the station platform all the way around the loop in the 20s when the money and the skilled labour was still available. Open another entrance further south from the Mullett post office and build future trains with single doors at the very ends of the cars, which would open whilst the central double doors stayed closed. The station surely would have seen more foot traffic today even if only used as a pseudo-terminus for express trains turning around and heading back uptown.
@@ss04to06I’m not sure if I am responding to your question correctly, but the old South Ferry station used to handle only the first five cars of the train. Which is why it was replaced. I think that’s fairly common knowledge among railfans, but maybe I’m just getting old, as I believe it’s been about 15 years since that station closed.
Why don't they just make these fantrips free for anyone who pays the fair? How come these fantrips don't have the trains run as normal locals that just anybody can ride (like the R1-R9 trips around Christmas) ?
Looking at these tunnels, I can see why the NYC subway gets its reputation for being a labyrinth full of homeless, crocodiles, giant rats and mutant ninja turtles. It's both spooky and really cool to see at the same time. So why is this train so slow, just because its really old? Wish this didn't have the passenger noise though.
Who is the guy constantly interfering with the driver, and telling them to stop at bloody yellow signals? That means proceed expecting stop! Its like stop entering 23rd... Literally no reason to stop, not even big crowds! Also please get them to allow you a external mic! Bloody kids constantly!
the kids should have gone to their moms because they were taking and saying hey l see a 4 train then they will say hey l say a 5 train l do not think there was a 6 train but l will say this the kids will say hey l say a 6 train that is my story for today
+k1.3rvf ,jfj Some trains have operator's cabs that only take up the right 1/3 of the train, which provides space for the passengers to see out the front

I saw myself on the video. I was working that day on the platform. It was nice to see the Low V in action.

+Cats01 That's correct! There are a few other stations set up like that besides 33rd as well! :D

Finally, someone knows!
Was this the reason the demolished Manhattan elevated express stops were above the local stops?
19:52 this is where city hall is

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
THERE WE GO FELIX
I know Felix would like to tell her to shut it up.😂😂😂
Next time have the kids and grandma at home!!!!!!
Some people can't tolerate silence and must fill it with noise, usually their own voice.
Those kids gave me a headache!! The train driver must have had one as well.
Nice Vintage action can't wait for the next Rail fanning trip
Just what everyone enjoyed on a fan trip like this , kids and an overly talkative mother telling Felix what’s going on. Felicia x look it’s dawk

U should do train reviews and more tours please I rely love them ❤️😉

It wouldn't hurt to replace a square wheel

R188s which are R142As

Wished the train driver woulda left that annoying woman @the abandant city hall station
The kids (I think) must love the subway ride
+rafael asuncionXD (broniesrock285) It's a very cool view, I can understand why they'd like it!
I could understand that too
Does anyone know what the two roll up doors just out of Grand Central are for?
It looks like they renovated the City Hall Station a bit, cleaning some windows. The subway tunnels look like mine shafts though.
Thanks! Great video and ride.

Very good video
I love the Bronx so much
The train stops frequently in the tunnels to give the ghosts time to get out of the way.
9:14 That disused station is either Worth Street or 18th Street
nice video and it is in 60fps to :=)
Can you please make a Sea Beach Line tour?

Wish this didn't have the passenger noise though.
The train was slow because of timers unfortunately
Was there a problem when diverting onto the City Hall Loop? It seemed either there was wheel slipage or the tracks out alignment/gauge.
+Chris Kelling There wasn't any problem. That's a pretty sharp curve, so you'll get some flange squealing.
What on earth they are tooting for while passing these stations for anyway?
to tell people the trains not stopping for them
@@gtavstepfordcounty1733 oh, I didn't know at all
Good job by Felix
Thank! "City -Hall" is beautiful station 👍
Nice! You can see me at 11:16 & 29:12

Jay Jay Yeah I took photos. Video didn't come out the way I wanted it to.
Wow. First off, credit to you for recognizing your self. Secondly, congrats for making this guy's video!
Dope man! Love the awesome content you make as always.

Since these are some of the original trains did they squeal that much when they ran originally
I hope the R262 will have decent front windows, fully transparent like on the modified PATCO trains or in Baltimore
9:18 look it's another abandoned station
"dis is nawt even a stashun"
How rough is that track when approaching to abandoned City Hall.

I think that station is over 100 years old.

19:50 CITY HALL STATION!
It could be used again if the MTA shortens the gap between the train and the platform.
