    1) Be sure to format your drive in "Mac OS Extended Journeled" (This is apples preferred format. Your computer will boot up and generally work faster)
    2) It's better to clone your drive current hdd to the ssd before you install it. You can use a free disc copying program like 'Super Duper' If you clone the drive before you install it you will have all of your data on your drive set up when you switch it on. Just put in your password and you're ready to go!

    I installed an SSD on my old late 2009 iMac. I did NOT have to disconnect any cables of the display. It was good enough just raise it as much as the cables allowed. I still had enough space to remove the old drive, put the new SSD into and even to connect the temperature sensor.

    Rather than CMD+R, and providing the old HD is functioning of course, you can clone the OS onto the SSD via USB and then when you install it its is ready to go.

    Use your Ethernet port.. Works way quicker. It wouldn't get past the first stage using wi fi.. It took me 3 hours trying.. so I am typing this to save headaches for future upgraders..USE ETHERNET PORT.

    If you’re not careful about removing the LCD panel you’re going to break cables or worse - pull connectors off the logic board.

    Hello, and thanks for this video. I have a 21.5" (Mid 2011). I don't know if the heat sensor is attached to the OEM HD. Just in case it does, how do you fix that heat sensor issue? DO you know of any SSD that comes with an adapter for it?
    Thanks for your help!

  • @ekat80

    if you are replacing your old HDD with SSD and you don't want your fan to be noisy, just take off your old HDD control board from the top of HDD (6 small screws), plug in the temperature sensor cable and stick the board on top of your new SSD with double sided tape.
    если вы меняете ваш старый HDD на SSD и не хотите что бы он шумно работал из за отсутствия датчика температуры, то снимите плату с верху вашего старого HDD диска , подсоедините к ней оставшийся шлейф температурного датчика и приклейте эту плату поверх нового SSD.

    • @chupacabraj4539
      @chupacabraj4539 6 років тому

      Are you sure about that? Doesn't the HDD control board needs to get power for the thermal sensor to work? If this works it could be great...

    It would help that you explain how you have solved the thermal sensor topic to prevent heavy fan air flow. These HDD found in iMac 27"s have specific digital connector to probe then internal HDD temperature then by software to trigger the fan blower. Problem with SDD, they do not have such digital sensor compatible with iMac since SDD stays very cold and no suffer of heat. So there is a need to emulate that sensor, connect to the 3rd cable which is not shown in your step by step video.

      tantratron I don't get it.. why a thermal sensor on the new harddrive or ssd ? Are the original drive born with the sensor inside the drive or ? Or it's just apple thinking : hey let's fuck it up to people who want to upgrade the drive, without a apple repair technician 😂 seems weird that a another normal new harddrive or ssd will punish the cooler 😋

    That was clear and interesting: Thanks very much. Some dumb questions:
    1. After you finish with System Restore and your Time Machine backup, does that mean that you can just start using your computer and all the software again ... , such as Apple Pages and Photoshop, etc. ... Or:
    2. Do you need to separately install the OS X operating system, and then also re-install each one of your software programs from the .dmg Installers ?
    I've been wondering about this for a long time.
    Thanks again.

Could you please let me know if is there a particular model of ssd drive (or other models) that can be installed on iMac 27-inch, Mid 2010 running Intel? Do I need to install a temperature sensor as well, or only if the original has a sensor? Samsung SSD drive, formatted as per instructions here, used Super Duper (?) to put on system; check it and it worked on the iMac. Followed video (a couple actually). Thought I had everything, although redoing the cables was challenging. Tried it, using CMD Option RP in case the new hardware not recognized. All I get is the chime and a black screen, then the fan at a great speed. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Mid 2011 iMac

    There is a reason why Apple made the iMac the way it is instead of having the ram and storage on the back for convenience. They don't like users upgrading storage and ram so that it can age quicker to incentivize sales in a short amount of years.

    • @zollotech
      @zollotech  6 років тому

    • @ReassuringSmile
      @ReassuringSmile 6 років тому

      you can do it... but it's very apparent that it was made difficult to perform. As for the newer ones, I believe they're soldered and that's inexcusable. I waited for the 2014 mac mini, the ram was soldered, so I had to purchase a 2012 version just to upgrade ram and SSD.

    Burt, I had an issue after I installed an SSD in my 2012 Macbook Pro. I was able to download Sierra no problem, all my files no problem, except that iMessage did not work. After fiddling with it for a while, I contacted Apple and they said that as I opened my Macbook and changed parts, my laptop was no longer an "Apple", and that the SSD change automatically shut down iMessage and iCloud.
    Have you run into this issue, and if so how did you resolve it? Thanks.

    Hi there, I upgraded 4 days ago my IMac Late 2015 21,5 Inch HDD ( because it was laggy and slow) to SSD Sasung EVO 850 500 GB and it worked fine for two days, then screen has freezed and then after trying to boot it again, question mark appeared , I was able to see SSD for a while in boot options and then it suddenly disappeared. Prohibitory sign appeared and the disk was dead. So I decided to again disasembly IMac and remove SSD to replace it with old HDD. Works fine. But when i connected SSD with enclosure to my IMac, it is not visible, also under Windows it seems like disk is dead. What can cause that ? Disk was brand new, not used and it failed. Is there anyone that occured the same issue here? I don't know if I should install next SSD drive if it's gonna die in 3 days. What can possibly do that? It worked fine for 2 days after replacement. I don't know how to deal it with and I don't wanna stuck on this HDD because it's terribly slow !

    What size SSD would you recommend for a 2008 iMac. I noticed that you went with 480GB. Could I get by with something smaller? Is there a reason you chose 480?

    My old HD crashed. So I was able to get it out and thankfully I have a gadget that I can plug the HD into to retrieve my files from. But I didn't have a time machine backup at the time. I have a brand new iMac now. Question I have is once I put a new HD in the old one, how do I get the new operating system on it? I don't have any disks. Is it possible to start up in RECOVERY mode and then go online to download the OS? That's where I"m stuck.

      TNA2Me Download the os on a usb drive and recover that way 😊 I've just got home and need to fix a iMac 27" also.. the hdd drive have stopped working, and they didn't take a backup before the drive failure :/ but I will install a hybrid ssd or a pure ssd and see how to install the os without any backups 😋

    Nice video! I've got a late 2009 iMac that I wanted to upgrade the HD to SSD but I was trying to find the recovery mode for the iMac. I startup and press Command + R like you instructed but it just boots up as normal. Other startup commands work but not this. It was running snow leopard and got upgraded to Maverics (from a copy as Apple won't support Mavericks anymore). Any idea why I can't get the Recovery bit to work? Thanks a mill

      Are you using a bluetooth keyboard? If so, that may be the problem. Get a wired keyboard. Mine would do the same thing until I got a cheap wired keyboard for this purpose.

      Internet recovery isn't compatible with your model.

    • @blaqkyellow
      @blaqkyellow 6 років тому

      What you do when you get the blinking file. Press command and R, keep in doing it till internet recover shows up. Find your WiFi and then when you see disk utility. Important see that your internet on. On top right you should see your WiFi signal if it off turn it on. Mines was off for some weird reason. After that go to OS X recover and follow the instructions. Now it’s working perfect and fast ✌🏼

    • @KamleshDesai

      2 things you can do__
      1. you can add and upgrade the memory, from the stock 4 to the max 16GB, and then
      2. add a new SSD HD.... this will make it run like almost new, but as someone said here, you may not be able to upgrade the OS at all, I think.
      At the most you will miss some higher end programs.... but the basic stuff, internet, word, excel, will all work for another few years atleast without an issue.
      All the best.
