  • The two-day Bicester Heritage FLYWHEEL 2023 show returned in June after a break of five years. A two-day show combining static and active displays of classic cars, racing cars, motorcycles and historic aircraft, it was an event we really didn't want to miss and we were fortunate enough to attend on day one.
Having attended a couple of Bicester Scrambles, it was interesting to compare FLYWHEEL at Bicester Heritage with them and note the differences. The former is a large, mainly static, gathering of classic and vintage cars held on a single day at a time in the grounds of Bicester Heritage, while the scope of vehicles in attendance at FLYWHEEL over the two days was much broader, with the added benefit of seeing many of them actively demonstrated, in the case of competition cars, motorcycles and karts, on a figure-of-eight demonstration track. The attendance of many fantastic old aircraft, including a return of the sole flying example of Bristol Blenheim to this former WW2 RAF airfield which was once home to Blenheims, was a real treat. As at the Scrambles, many of the classic car related businesses based at Bicester Heritage threw open their doors for FLYWHEEL 2023, inviting members of the public to have a close look at what they do. All in all, a grand day out.
In this video I spent the day walking all around the Bicester site, trying to see as much as possible, both parked up, out on the track, and zooming around in the skies above. As the Old Classic Car channel is primarily about old cars and vehicles, these are the main focus although I have included some of the more modern vehicle displays to try and give an overall flavour of FLYWHEEL as a whole. Let me know in the comments if you attended Bicester Heritage FLYWHEEL and what you thought of it, especially if you attended on day two - were there any differences in the display vehicles between day one and two?
I'll link to the two Scramble videos already on the channel at the end of this video. Please take a look around if you're new to the Old Classic Car channel, thanks for watching.

Growing up in the 70-80s, I used to love watching old Harold Lloyd films on the TV - I can still hear the theme tune in my head!
Some excellent cars, btw. The old 30s Vauxhall being a favourite!

1:17:16, thats' a Riley Adelphi .I had one in my early teens in very nice condition,a 15/6. I had one problem, the gearbox had no reverse and I couldn't find anyone who could help me fix it,so I swapped it for a mini.... So when I started my apprenticeship, one of the first main jobs i had to tackle and learn about was...preselector gearboxes.

I really enjoyed tis mix of some beautiful classic cars and 'planes. And the sound of a full house harry flatters BDA was used by one driver to utilise the power and truly drift in order to stitch together the apexes! The wonderful memories flooded back! The mix was brilliant, so congrats to you both!

At last a Jowett Jupiter. Yes stuck in the back of a dealers. But You ticked it off for me. I did enjoy the wonderful cars on show. They were quite something. Was there one I would like to take home. Sorry I have not the space to look after a nice old car. If I did then there was a maroon Austin long wheelbase saloon which popped up a few times & that would do me. I am guessing it to be a 6-cylinder car with generous room in the rear seating arrangements.

Great film and you got my Series 1 on it! It's a 56, 86 inch, which has been rebuilt but left as original as possible. It is also used everyday, not wrapped in cotton wool which I reckon makes it much more reliable!

Another great video. You have so many awesome car shows. I love the sound of a screaming BDA engine. The more things change, the more they stay the same as the AC shows with the switchs on the steering wheel. No modern car is without them. I loved the Lancia Stratos.

Another good one Rick. You were talking about that Opel Cadet. I have a 1937 Earls Court Motor Show edition of The Autocar and there is one in there, so I dug it out. Specs are 11.1hp ( 9 Pound tax), 1074cc list price135 Pound. So they must have been trying to sell them in the UK. That car just looks like the picture in the magazine.

A late friend of mine, John Baker, restored his Gordon Keeble at the Jensen factory where he worked as service manager. Unfortunately I never saw it. I was recently given his membership card to the owners club as a souvenir. Oddly enough my wife recently asked 'If money was no object what classic car would I like' ? Have a guess what my answer was! Those ventilated wheels and spinners just look so right.

Perfect way to spend a Sunday evening! My favourites: Alvis Speed 20, yellow Dolly Sprint, Lagonda Rapier. So much automobilia (and cars) for sale - does Mrs OCC confiscate your credit card when you attend these events?!!

Regarding the little blue RHD Opel. A lot of European and Scandinavian cars were rhd before the war. Sweden only changed to LHD in the 1950s. Might this little Opel be one of those?

Sweden changed to driving on the right, on 3rd September 1967...............Many high class French cars were built as right hand drive until the mid 1950's...............

The Opel Kadett was assembled in the UK in Southampton in the late 1930s. About 40 % cheaper tahn in Germany, they were subsidized by the German government. Aiming to damage the British motor industry. Ofcourse they woul dhave known that was going to play an important role in aircraft production and with general war work. Not a great success, the car in the video is for sure a British assembled one on account of the RHD. All in all in 1936-39 they sold about 75,000 cars outside of Germany, all cheaply weakeling local brands.

Only two complaints; firstly the video was far too long - I had intended to dip in for a few minutes and found I had been watching for over an hour, and secondly this video was too short so you only spent a few seconds on the Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire 346 and no time at all on some of the wonderful early aircraft when I wanted to see far more of them. Keep up the good work.
p.S. I have just found brief footage of the same 346 in another of your videos and as it has been converted into a bar it now has far less interest for me.
