- Sleep perform an abrigded version of their legendary composition "Dopesmoker", originally released in 1999 as "Jerusalem" and then in 2003 as "Dopesmoker". Recorded live at Den Grå Hal (The Grey Hall) in Christiania, Copenhagen, Denmark on May 23rd, 2018.
Best way to listen to this album is in the car on a long drive and the volume cranked.
I'd say the best to listen to this album is while smoking weed outside with bare feet and the volume at max.

I saw Swans on their last tour, and we got 7 songs over the course of 3 hours. The first was about 45 minutes.

sounds like if they were playing too. Not for me. Reminds me of YOB, which I just recently seen and walked out because of a headache (was there for Voivod really). Can listen for hours upon hours of DKs, Enslaved, Bad Brains, Whitechapel, Op Ivy, Thermals, Ponys, Slayer, Minor Threat, Type O Neg, etc - AND at high volumes. BUT I can't do this. Sobriety maybe? Do you need to be a... Dopesmoker to enjoy this?? I dunno, maybe I'm just becoming an old fart.

Often famous guitarists will talk about the one time they saw someone play a guitar like no one before him and the music sounds like nothing you've ever heard. It opens the mind to a new world unseen and inspires you to pick up the guitar yourself. Black sabbath s guitarist Tony had Django reinhardt and we have matt pike . First time I heard Matt play on dopesmoker it was like nothing I'd ever heard and if I played guitar that probably how I would want it to sound. Mark my words this slow riff style will take over mainstream music as the goal is time listened and the best way to do that is slow the song down and lengthen it. Slowed and reverb is already a booming genre amongst teens when they start making music thats what they will draw inspiration from. They are also have the incentive to do so with the current model of music being released.

They always short it to about 20 minutes for concerts, because otherwise they would have time to play only like two songs besides it
When I've seen them this has been the encore. The first time I saw them it was the very start of the song. The next time they came through it was the next 20 min of the song. (When he is singing "Proceeds the Weedian. Nazareth") Next time they might just do the last 20 minutes.

i think they wrote this song and practiced/recorded it over 3 or 4 years or something. The song they'd write inbetween writing this song became the album "Holy mountain"

Watching Sleep play "Dopesmoker" again, I have seen them twice live, makes me feel so sad. It's like I am watching the death of Heavy Metal. Since Sleep I can't say their is a Heavy Metal band that really matters. I love music, I love Rock 'n Roll, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, Bo Didley, The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and on and on I grew up on. I am an original head banger and Heavy Metal fan. My three favorite bands in order are Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. That order is because I heard Black Sabbath first, Judas Priest second, and Iron Maiden third. Sleep belongs with them as a great of Heavy Metal.

Sleep is a very well known and well respected band that's influenced countless modern metal bands, and pretty much the entire stoner metal scene. Hipster metal is more among the lines of Deafheaven, and I say that as a massive fan of both bands

I disagree. Jason maintains a steady slow tempo. Hakius would often rush, which is kinda pointless. Who wants to listen to a fast sleep song?
I’m picking up that these guys are worshipped and it’d be sacrilege for a metal loving stoner like me to say this is “boring as fuck” but … I kinda think it is.
You just need to listen to the track more. Turn up the volume and really feel it. It will grow on you.
