You have a NAS that's suppose to keep you from data lose but then you place it on a janky wooden shelf that seems like it's about to break any time haha...hopefully you've upgrade that shelf lol
It's so flimsy, that white device on the right was seen starting to fall off the shelf but the video was clipped as it was going...oh man, that would be a disaster when all that Synology falls.
This video was insanely helpful, genuinely. I didn't want to break our existing storage pool and I'm totally new to NAS systems. I was able to create an archive for us on an expansion unit safely and with confidence. Thank you!
According to the Synology Raid Calculator, SHR-2 with 6TB+6TB+4TB+2TB+2TB as used in this video will have 6TB usable for data, 4TB for redundancy and a whopping 10TB completely unused (neither for storage, nor for redundancy). Hardly recommendable.
@@robincroneld6036 Just as context information: I have a DX517 myself, but it is equipped with equally sized hard disk and works without unused space. The product is excellent, but that does not avoid misconfigurations by end users ;-)
Lol. I came here for this reply. Not 25% storage loss, 75% storage loss. Nice that they support mixing drives, but the two largest but boy, that is a big cost. Thanks for the video, great content. I was going to mix drives too, but now I know the hit to storage
Yeah, SHR is not magic. It can definitely give you more storage with mismatched drives than RAID 6, but it still needs to be able to spread out the parity blocks, and with the need for allowing for 2 drives to fail, there's even more restrictions on what configurations will increase your space.
How ironic, I’m already on about my 4th synology unit, upgrading not due to issues, but to gain performance and features. Black Friday deals were made for Synology.
I planned to add JBOD to backup my DS1621xs+ but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to add the expansion unit for that purpose. This video has convinced me that the expansion is the way to go. Thanks!
I have a Synology DS1522+ I have almost filled up the storage . Now I have confusion whether to buy the DX517 or buy a 8bay unit , another confussion is we cannot extend the single volume from DS1522+ to the expansion unit. Please advise on how to proceed
Will the expansion unit go into standby mode along with the primary unit if you have a UPS backup battery, or do you have to set the expansion unit up separately to power down gracefully
what does it mean when synology warns you that the dx517 power button has no power off function when the volume is created? does that mean the drives can't be powered down (sleep) when they aren't being used or you have to power off the main unit in order to power down the dx517? or what?
Great video with lots of great info but @15:50 he says to NEVER have an admin account on your system. I'm not very network savvy so what does that mean? I have to have an admin account somewhere, correct? Where should it be instead?
Hello and tnx for the video, which although this is a Tesla related channel is the more exhaustive on the subject. I have a question : finally did you create separate volumes on the DX517 or did you just expanded the one you had on your original NAS ? I'm asking this because I've read at least twice somewhere ( without any official pointers to documentation or kb's, tho) that spanning a volume across NAS+Expansion is not recommended.. 😞
@@teslaownersonline5805 Tnx for the prompt reply...unfortunately my arriving DX517 purpose was to expand the existing volume and still I have no official confirmation that this would work .... 🙄
Fantastic video. Thank you. Question (or maybe, opinion?) -- we are moving to a NAS for the first time so two MacPros can share the Synology DS1821+ But we have other drives we need to occasionally hot-swap into the workflow depending on the project. We were thinking of getting the DX517 so that we could mount individual drives into the network as we required And yes, we know it would not be as fast as a Raid and yes we know the drives don't have redundancy I's not critical media. Kind of an adjunct question: Would unused slots on the DS1821+ allow us to do that? So we could have, say 5 slots dedicated to the RAID and the leftover three we could use to hot-swap single drives in? Thanks you for any insight.
“Because I value my data.” Idk man, that shelf is looking like it’s about to give up haha hope it never does but I would reinforce it or use heavier duty brackets. Hope you don’t live near a fault line
Owner successfully ound the best place to store and operate these sensitive devices. They are in a dirty metl workshop, terrible cable management and on the top, thire is a very weak shelf to store few ten of gigabytes data. Congratulation.
Out of interest why did you choose SHR-2 instead of SHR? It seems to me that SHR offers more functionality and provides more space available. But, I'm still pretty new to this so interested to know if you had a reason.
@@BrandonHall1 Personally i think it was overkill in this situation because he only has 19tb of capacity and the drives are quite small in size. rebuilding would only take a couple of days tops. i don't believe (or haven't heard people mentioning) that a rebuild is likely to take out a drive! I've had to rebuild on smr drives and it took a couple of weeks (compared to days with cmr drives - yeah i know!) and not had problems. i remember someone saying there is a very low chance of two drives going down, you also can setup smart tests to help monitor drive health. the only situation where you would need shr2 more-so is when the nas is located a long distance away and is time consuming to get to to change drives, for example.
It hurts my soul to see WD Greens and Seagate White Labels being put into a NAS environment. 😬 SMR and no Time Limited Error Recovery is a recipe for disaster. But it's worked for you so far, as long as you have backups you'll be ok.
That shelf you have your Synology systems on looks really flimsy. That's a disaster waiting to happen. Please relapse your shelf ASAP. Great video, I wish this existed when I started my server setup 10 years ago. The pool and volume explanation was super helpful.
8:48 nice cut 😂 just as you were saying how messy your setup is.
Nice rig. But all of that effort will not help you when that shaky shelf will fall to the ground with all the stuff loaded on it.
plus, hard drives don't like vibrations

Good Morning, awesome video. I also use the DX-517 as well. What Synology app were you using on you cell phone to shut down you Synology NAS?
Thanks for posting this. Just about to do the same with my DS1019+. :)
I like that you desk is not organized, it makes me feel normal. So, thanks.

Wondering the same thing
Yes the primary unit will shut down the DX517

Does the expansion unit work the first unit cpu a lot more harder
Were your Drobo drives readable in the expansion unit without reformatting?

I am a bit surprised at the price, wondering what's inside?
have you still got this or upgraded now?

Not a good idea expanding the volume, best to create a new volume.
Hi, can i get a reference on your "data cable" you used to connect the main unit to the expansion unit. TIA.
How fast is that connection between the 2 units. Faster than my SAS card in my old Freenas Server?
I don't even want to think about when that shelf will go down! (it seem very secure)

I appreciate the non-Tesla content, cool video!
here is an idea! buy drives with more capacity! this whole stack is 2X 14HDD drives instead of 10x 1tbs
can we mix up different sized (4Tb, 2 TB , 6 TB) in the same enclosure in synology box as well as the JBOD?
you can but may have some space that can't be used.
Wait so can you just buy the DX517 and use it as its own as a jbod?

Of course the dude with tesla in his user puts his sensitive data next to a column drill on top of a literal magic floating sheet of veneer
8 drives and only 20TB?
Why bother getting an expansion device instead of getting decently sized HDD?

More drives you have the more redundancy you want. If you lose one drive the rebuild process could easily take out another
