Every year, 30,000 missionaries are called to serve the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It’s the largest full-time missionary force of any church. Most are under 25 and away from home for up to two years. Europe’s biggest training center is located in the north of England. This documentary follows three young missionaries through the first few months of training and work in the field.

I served an LDS mission 20 years ago. It was one of the best things I've ever done. I was fully invested in serving others and learned how to study which helped me in life (now an attorney)

Glad it worked out for you. Not a believer in your church but I've met quite a few LDS missionaries in life so far. You've all come across as wonderful people, and really respectful and understanding of my critiques of certain elements of church history and the Book of Mormon's historical claims. What was it you particularly enjoyed, if I might ask?

I am Pagan. I used to enjoy letting all the missionaries in, since I can argue with facts and history and often know the Bible better than they do. But I got tired of it, especially when I was working nights and trying to sleep during the day. I was very amused to discover the most effective method of getting rid of them was a sign on my door "Beware of Snakes" . If they still knocked, I just answered the door with a six foot boa constrictor on my shoulders. 😂 One woman fell off the porch into the trash bin. 😂😂

Given these tens of thousands of missionaries they constantly send out, their success seems to be highly limited. The LDS Church claims about 17 million members worldwide, which is far less than even 1% of the world's population. This would hardly seem to be validation of the "One, True Church of Jesus Christ." Also, like many other denominations, they seem to be bleeding membership, particularly among young people. Of course, they will continue to count baptized people as "members" even if they no longer are involved, just as Catholics do.

I have a sign on my door telling the religious to GO AWAY! I'M NOT INTERESTED. It only began to work once those who *ignored* the sign were dealt with in a mean and aggressive manner by me.
I do NOT understand those people. It's clear there are those who don't want them to come around, yet they do anyway. We don't want to have to respond in a rude manner; we don't like being FORCED to act that way. I see that as a mortal sin on their part to provoke us.

Each representative of each and every faith is absolutely certain God told them THEIR particular version of religion is the ONE AND ONLY correct one. And therefore, they've got to save you, regardless of how much you DISLIKE it. Strange how God has arranged that there are so many of these "ONE and ONLY" True religions, isn't it?

I just think it’s dangerous for them. The religions that go door to door truly believe they are doing God’s work. But, honestly, I prefer to be left alone. I am very content with the religion I was raised with. I would rather not be insulted by being told I am going to Hell. Just my thoughts.

    • @Infideles

Mormons are actually quite charitable in that regard. They don't think most others go to Hell, but simply to lesser degrees of "heaven."

I appreciate the work these young missionaries do. It’s a great way to learn and love another culture and country by serving the people there, and to think deeply and critically about your beliefs and the value they can bring to others. A lot of good is done by their efforts.

They don't really do very much good. I met an older lady who has a progressive muscle disease and needed some assistance and, having seen the LDS Missionaries advertising they were looking to help people, I suggested she phone them. She did. They came over to help, but didn't tell her in advance that they only stay for about 45 to 50 minutes each time they're scheduled to help someone. It was tremendous effort for her getting the tarp set up and bringing all the tools out and then they only did a little bit of work and then took off, leaving the job unfinished, and leaving her to have to clean up after them. She said it was a complete waste of her time.
She was very disappointed. And I was too. I wondered if she could possibly have gotten something mixed up, so I called them for assistance with a little project in my backyard -- heavy things I couldn't move (I'm also over 65). They scheduled a morning time to come, and sure enough they didn't tell me ahead of time that they would only be here for 45-50 minutes. Yet after they came over and started to help me they said after 40 minutes that they had to leave soon. And they did! They just took off! Didn't finish, and were very rushed at leaving, acting as if they couldn't even take the time to properly explain why they so SUDDENLY disappear! It was very ODD!!!!!
I wouldn't even get involved with that religion, because they don't have the decency to warn people in advance, and they do so very little, and then leave in the middle of a task. Very weird!
So, apparently, you THINK they do good. But from what I've experienced, they do Very LITTLE good. I ended up calling a local church and their youth group were kind enough to come over and they spent nearly 6 hours and didn't leave until they actually finished the work. _THEY_ did a lot of good. Not the Mormons.

    • @Decision_Justice
      @Decision_Justice 6 днів тому

Not really. A great deal more good would be done if they weren't trained specifically to be salesmen for a church that brainwashes them to actually believe Noah's Flood and the Ark (with all life on earth crammed inside it somehow) all really happened. It's completely impossible. Plus their Church teaches that God is a man -- a White skinned Cro-Magnon Homo Sapiens (no Neandertals allowed) and lives on a planet near a star named Kolob.
I guess you would like it though, because it's a Church built for and run by men for the enjoyment of men. Is that what you really like about it?

I appreciate the BBC covering LDS missions. Hopefully it is objective. People can disagree with our religion all they want, but we are not a cult or brainwashed or dumb. Our church encourages education. It is the fault of individual members who choose to remain sheltered and naive about the world around them.

@@catotheyounger2689 Thank you for your answer. I can agree with your idea that God is a master scientist.
You mentioned that every culture has a flood myth. I'm not so sure about _EVERY_ since there are many, many different cultures.
Regardless, Don't you think that if several cultures have a flood myth, this would mean _THEY_ experienced a flood, and not that the entire earth was put under water in a worldwide catastrophe done by God?
Have you looked online to find discussions presenting evidence that shows Noah's Flood (a flood covering the entire earth) could not have happened? There's also a channel Aron Ra who has an entire playlist on how the various branches of science disprove Noah's Flood.
Do you think it would be kind of important to look at the evidence against the occurrence of something, before believing it?

I actually feel sorry for Mormon missionaries. They are young, idealistic--and totally naïve. They have been indoctrinated by their Church for years, but they have almost no grasp of the theologies of other faiths. They also lack knowledge of the complexities and contradictions in the history of their own Church. When confronted with these difficulties, their final resort is to fall back on their testimonies that the Book of Mormon is true and that Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God called to restore the Church.

I feel sorry for them also. They definitely are brainwashed. All it takes is for one coincidence to happen and suddenly they believe God is manifesting the "Truth" of their religion to them. And the Book of Mormon is a racist, misogynist book. It claims that God turned the formerly "white" skinned native Americans into people with a skin of blackness all to make them unappealing to the righteous folk.
It also promises that if their descendants believe in the Book of Mormon and in the Mormon Church that they will become "White and delightsome" again.
      Rather sick stuff.
Mormon kids go on missions and are too afraid to break free of the control of their leaders. They're brainwashed to believe they'll "ruin their lives" if they leave their mission early.

@@illmerica322 Believing in nonsense is NOT something we should respect. If you run into an adult who still believes in Santa Claus as his religion, does that mean you have to respect his belief?
Everyone should call out belief in things that have no basis in reality. If you don't call out such beliefs then we soon will all be living in a Demon Haunted world.
Many of these religions would just as soon eliminate all the nonbelievers. And when they gain the power over your government (as most of them seek, especially the monotheistic religions plus the L. Ron Hubbard cult) they'll be disenfranchising you quicker than you can say Jack Spratt.

Thank you for speaking up. I came across a young man posting under a video that he needed guidance because his parents wanted to make him go on a mission and he didn't want to go. I answered his comment, but I went over to his channel and discovered his latest video is an "I Know it ALL" video where he cherry-picks Bible verses and tells Christians to "get your pastor to explain that!" very arrogantly. His attitude was a total 180 from a video he did a year ago.
What changed his mind? He went for his "Patriarchal Blessing" and this man who didn't know him at all he says, after a few minutes of conversation "got it right" about him that he's going to the Temple for his endowment soon. He had just submitted his Mission Papers.
