I can't count how many times I have been in a park or walking on a trail and see an unleashed dog running around. No, I don't care if you think your precious dog is "friendly". Animals are still animals and they can snap at any time.
An unleashed dog far from its owner can also cause problems no matter how terrific its recall is or how "friendly" it is. A large friendly dog can accidentally knock over a smaller dog or child while attempting to play or can startle someone on a trail causing them to slip and fall. Depending on the area, a loose dog can also startle wildlife and/or injure them or, depending on the wild animal in question, it can injure the dog or cause it other problems (like getting skunked). Leash laws exist for a reason and should be followed---and if dogs are not allowed in a particular park or on a particular trail system, conscientious dog owners should follow those rules, too.

Realistically, the dog may be put down, but honestly, it could go to an organization or home that can train and supervise it properly. The more important thing is that the woman does not get to keep this dog because that is the dangerous part. And she should also be prevented from keeping any other dog (especially a large one, but any). Plus any fine or jail time should be increased because of leaving the scene. It's just a matter of time that they find her. That won't bring the family much comfort but these things need to be enforced. There are too many dog owners trying to get away with not being able to control their dog and then letting it go off leash when they have no way to get the pet back in an incident. So tired of those entitled owners who then blame others for their dogs behaviour. Guess what, if you're the owner of a dog, it's all your responsibility. All big dogs could cause problems if their owners didn't do what they do to control them. And there are plenty that don't know what to do and this is what happens. There are going to be some small percentage of dogs that are too far gone, but we have no idea if that is the case with this dog. But I'm mad at the human, not the dog.

My mother was absolutely devastated and when she walked down the street with the witness to confront her -bawling her eyes out - the woman denied it even though we had a photo of her car and license plate. There needs to be a law where people are required to remain at the scene. Thoughts and prayers go out to little Sky and her family 🙏❤️
@@janetch7384there's no reason to think it won't happen. Jail time is on the table for someone at fault for their dog attacking another animal already, up to 2 years. And then she fled the scene, not even just as a "I panicked" or "I had to get my dog away from all those people in case something else happened" way because she still hasn't come forward. She ran to avoid consequences, and that will make her sentence much worse. I'm guessing reimbursement for the cost of the dead dog, quite a bit in damages, and then some jail time. How much depends on how big the fine is, if they'd rather heavily fine her than jail her, and her behavior going forward. I'd be surprised if she got no jail time though
When my dog attacked another person's pet we paid the full vet fees plus another 1k in pain and suffering as well we should have without them asking for this. She should not have been allowed to be off leash at the time or indeed anytime other than in controlled settings due to her terrier breed instincts. Their poodle escaped with a ten inch gash on it's head that needed to be stitched up and anyone with empathy would understand what utter distress that would cause to the owners and family. Years later I was involved in a hit and run incident as the victim and it reminded me of the importance of taking responsibility and accountability of one's own actions in response to causing pain and suffering to someone else. That protagonist was never found and it still angers me to this day that they did not come forward.

No one even uses their brain anymore. The comment section is just like a mob. The owner could have adopted the dog. Many people adopt dogs these days. She may not of raised this animal. Some dogs have many owners. Dogs also experience trauma and have fears. They are NOT programmable. You can't train every single instinct, fear, desire out of a dog. Also little dogs where bred for hunting and killing small animals. Your little angel face barking at the window every five seconds at the squirrels and birds and every dog walking has aggressive motives. They want to catch that squirrel! And not to make friends with it lol. Big dogs are less aggressive overall but inflict far more damage because they are bigger. No animal can 100% be trusted around other animals. Dogs are territorial and fight. Big dogs get scared of little dogs and vise versa.
