- It's winter in the Eastern Sierra and you know that means we are taking full advantage of every gloriously sunny day to hike and explore the Sierra's breathtaking beauty during this time of year. We hiked the Tyee Lakes Trail near Bishop, California and were seriously blown away by the stunning scenery that we had all to ourselves. Where have all the hikers gone?

Being in Alabama, hiking season for me always starts in winter. No bugs, no humidity, no longer drenched in sweat, and much better views.

I grew up in lake Tahoe as a teenager I had a friend who was 70 years old who lived on Donner summit and we would hike up there in the 1970s. His father was 90 years old and came from Ireland and was in San Francisco during the 1906 earthquake and I was able to meet him when I was 16. We would hike around on summit and he would show me the trees that were cut by the donor party. It was incredible and so quiet and peaceful
I also remember the windmill in Truckee and all the log trucks

It's really a blessing when the snowstorms tarry so you can get out into the wild and see scenery like this. I totally understand about hiking in short sleeves in the cold, because I tend to sweat a lot and build up body heat quickly. However it's a different challenge if there is wind. My wife is an ice skater, I will have to show her this video!
Yes David -- the wind is definitely what gets us. We'll be heating up and strip down to base layers, then come around a corner into cold wind and have to immediately break out the jackets again. Highly recommend this hike for you and your wife next year -- it's not hard to get out to the lakes, and what a dream for an ice skater to have a gorgeous place like that all to herself! ❤️

You're so right! It was some combination of high-altitude plus being utterly all alone in such a beautiful place, we were literally just laughing and acting like little kids for 6 straight hours. One of the funnest days ever. ❤️

You are a couple of kids at heart! I love it!!! My favorite lake was the one of Adam chasing you Elise. It would have been even better if the camera caught Adam slipping on his bum for a end of 2023 Adam blooper. No such luck Elise, RATS! I thought you might add another Elise blooper there for a moment, but so glad you didn’t. Wow.. what a beautiful sunny day, looks really warm for december. We went snowshoeing in the Dolomites a few days ago and the weather was beautiful and unusually warm for the season also here in Italy.
Yes Massimo, it was super warm for December! Very glad to hear that it's beautiful in the Dolomites right now too -- as you know we love coming to the Dolomites in the summer, but would love to get over there for some snowshoeing adventures at some point too! ❤️

We were right there with you! Usually by late December there is too much snow, but in a low snow year it is a frozen paradise up there! ❤️

Haha I didn't know you guys had taught Elise so many moves, Bob 😂! We were actually up at around 11,000 feet, and the sunrises were incredible up there!! ❤️

Very fun, the Sierra's is one of the last places I haven't been and hope to change that. My favorite lake is the one you are having fun on, because that is what makes them all great. Seriously that looked like so much fun, it's hard to believe more people aren't taking advantage of the nice days in the winter. However my very favorite part was 6:35 when we got some new Elise music. Loved that one, very reminiscent of your earlier style that I fell in love with. Nice to get a new piece, hope you develop it further.

Meanwhile, you have GOT to get to the Sierra. As you know we've hiked literally all over the world, but nothing beats the Sierra especially if you love exquisitely beautiful lakes. ❤️

I am torn between lake 3 and 4, for a favorite.
I raced bicycles for Univ of Colorado back in college. I took the Eric Heiden approach and speed skated in the winter to maintain leg fitness. The problem back then was the closest indoor 400 meter rink was up in Butte MT. But, we had a 400 m rink in Georgetown CO, about 45 minutes west of Denver on I70. These lakes remind me of there as well, it too, was up in the mountains with ridges on the edge of the area. Very beautiful! Yes….I would highly recommend taking up skating, and bringing some skates with on your hikes.

Adam and E❤️ my little great grandkids are still jump in our pool. It's been like 57 degrees here! Those kids make my heart smile!! My Blaire absolutely Loves Es singing!! Yep E we still dance around to Coronavirus Honeymoon❤️

The winter of 1976-1977 was one of the worst snow years in history in the sierras. I was living in Mammoth at the time. It was before snow making. The Christmas ski season turned into a disaster. The ski shops turned to renting ice skates and people were doing exactly what you were trying to do. If the snow doesn't happen soon you will have time to hone your skills.
That's wild about the ski shops, Alan! If the snow holds off into December again next year, we are for sure going to get skates and at least try it. It's funny, because neither of us was ever tempted by ice rinks but these gorgeous lakes cannot be passed up! ❤️

SAME. Adam is much more the daredevil than I am, but somehow once you see someone frolicking on a beautiful glassy lake like that it becomes very hard to resist venturing out on it!

This is totally adorable but I love how you skipped right over that it's a 2000' climb, and even just for the first lake you have to go up 1300' - in the snow and ice. Yee haw.
Haha you are totally right Ellen, and added to that it started at like 9000 feet! Coming up from 0 we were very winded, and that mountain-high is probably a big part of what was making us so slap-happy! ❤️
Snow lowers the air temperature by several degrees because it reflects most of the suns energy back to space and it doesn't heat up as much as dark colored bare ground. Normally the High Sierra would have a few feet of snow in December but the combination of no snow and none of the cold winds that typically accompany winter storms means much warmer than normal temperatures at altitude. A person who spends all their time at sea level might not realize how warm the hills are during winter dry calm spells because the winter sun is to low and weak to completely mix out the nightime temperature inversion. Storm winds/Santa Anna winds do mix out the inversion so when its stormy or windy the inversion disappears and the hills are colder than the valley bottoms. The bottom line is while some winter days are brutally cold in the mountains their are also a few really surprisingly warm winter days.

No “big dumps” in the Sierra this year …a few side notes from A SAR member…trails are ICY in the winter in the Sierra you can easily find yourself in a treacherous situation where you never would expect I suggest microspikes.
Also daylight is scarce in the winter months so always bring a headlamp and anticipate how you would return in the darkness as you embark on your adventure in the mountains ❤

That's an important question. Adam's feet don't usually get too cold, but mine definitely do. For our next really cold high-altitude hike I've got some battery heated socks I'm going to try, and will def let you know how they work! ❤️ --E
I think it would be nice to show the route and location on a map at the beginning of your videos...elevation gain and distance/time would be handy too....
Absolutely -- we have been doing more deep beta dives in the members videos, but at least on the harder hikes we'll try to do that on the main channel videos as well. ❤️

That's a good question, Andrew, and yes we often do have to travel further because the roads to the nearer trailheads tend to get closed by the snow. But we've got our snowshoes and four-wheel-drive ready to go, so should have some excellent winter adventures coming up over the next few months! ❤️

Next time you should bring your kids with you. Having marriage without your kids around is empty. It's the whole reason God gave the command to marry have children and that they are a reward from him.
We would love to have them come with us! It's challenging because Adam's daughter is finishing college at Georgetown and his son has a lot of weekend work and volunteer commitments, but whenever they're willing and able to come we take them for sure! ❤️
