I really enjoyed this Yosemite adventure. I got to live in the park for 6 months in 2004 and it was easily the best summer of my life. One recommendation for future snowshoe outings: get poles with snow baskets. You will find it much easier to move without your poles sinking all the way to the bottom of the snowpack.
Thanks Dan, and you are totally right. Haha! Well, aside from the transient fear that I would never escape from the snowpack, it was actually quite fun. And worth it for this insane campsite :D Thanks for watching! - E
Nice work...and great video!!! Hope someone pointed out a couple of things that would make your life easy for your next trips - Snow baskets on trekking poles and bigger snowshoes. Trekking poles are not of much use in the snow without the snow basket. Great job with walls around the tent though. Also, if you carry a backpacking shovel, digging out the stuck shoe or stuck leg will be much easier ;)
Thanks so much Harry! We were a bit naive about how much snow there was on this particular day. Smaller shoes and poles without baskets are actually really helpful for going over logs, rocks, etc. and up super steep terrain, and we expected a lot more of that and a lot less of the really deep snow! We probably need to get poles where we can put baskets on and off as needed so we’re ready for whatever we encounter. And you are right, we DEFINITELY need to get a backpacking shovel! Really appreciate your insights :)
@@LiveHardxLoveHard You guys did amazing for someone new to powder and backpacking. That section from TV to IP is a good one. Also, kudos for being out there when the Saturday night was in the 20s. I was camped in the valley and skipped backpacking, although the plan was to go from Badger pass to Sentinel. All trekking poles probably have the option for snow baskets, on and off (I would assume so). Great adventure stories..keep them coming!
Thanks Harry! It was a cold night for sure but worth it for the adventure. So much gear we keep adding to the list- just gotta keep saving up so we can make it all happen!
Entertaining and educational with a majestic background, pretty sweet guys - but I’d say that snowfall was not entirely friendly to poor Elise, I think she could use a pair of snow baskets. Thank you both for sharing, btw Elise/Pops sounded great, nice mix!

Wow, loved this! That winter backpacking trip looked epic, and the snow conditions made it even more intense. The camp spot with that incredible view-just wow! Quick question-what do you guys do for recovery on multi-day trips like this (to allow you to keep going strong without recovery days)? Do you use things like compression sleeves, stretching, or CBD to keep going strong each day and manage soreness? Thanks!
That's a great question, Dean. We probably should do more for recovery on multi-day trips, but mostly we just take ibuprofen for soreness and use active recovery (getting back on the trail) to keep ourselves going. We definitely do make sure to eat and drink a whole lot, because it is easy to under-nourish on multi-day treks so we always force ourselves to eat a little more than we feel like eating. ❤️
Thanks so much! Active recovery and staying fueled make a lot of sense. I’ll definitely keep the extra eating in mind. Appreciate the insight, and looking forward to more of your awesome adventures! ❤️
Haha, this was definitely one exhausting trek, but SOOOO worth it for those views from the tent! Glad we could take you along for this ridiculous adventure 😂
This is a fantastic question, Humu. We don't know the answer yet, because we haven't tried skiing on this kind of adventure, but we're thinking of trying it this winter so hopefully we can let you know soon! ❤️
Elise, of all people, should not say "I suck" in the middle of all that, no matter how challenging it is, you rock girl, and Adam has a bit of a height advantage in those situations! Great hike and video guys, trails are so different in the snow.
Aw thank you so much Berry! And you are right about that, we would literally run up this trail in the summer but in the snow it was just insanely difficult. And Adam’s height definitely helps him out in challenging situations! Really appreciate your encouragement. And don’t worry, my smaller height seems to give me a real advantage over adam at high altitudes, so it all works out ❤️🥰
Wow! This is really incredible video and I would say, one of your best videos! You won’t disappoint us in terms of sunrise! What a phenomenal sunrise that one was! You can’t ask for a better place to wake up than THIS! Full watch my friends! Keep exploring!

Yes! Such an incredible and unforgettable experience, especially getting to have a sunrise and sunset like that all to yourself. You just have to be crazy enough to sleep in 15F in a tent haha.
Great fun you guys were having there! Just hilarious at how hard going that was 😂 Amazing job getting up to the camp spot, fantastic views on your doorstep & a great idea of digging that trench as well 👌
Haha! Well sometimes it’s all about mentality - Adam and I will feel like the world is freezing over in LA when we wake up and it’s 40F, and then we go and throw ourselves into a snow camping adventure and suddenly 15F seems like a great time 🤣🤷🏻♀️
Would you either of two have the coordinates for the location where you set up tent the first night? Spectacular, and it seems every accessible despite it being a winter hike. Any special permit required?
Hey Kevin, sorry we don't have the exact coordinates, but we're pretty sure it was Stanford Point. At the time we did it we did not need a permit, but usually you are required to get a Wilderness Permit for overnighting in Yosemite. They used to allow walk-up permits, but since the pandemic, they've started requiring online reservations a couple weeks ahead of time. However, it shouldn't be too hard to get one in winter. No one's crazy enough to want to sleep in 10 degree weather 🤣
Hey, thanks so much! And YES, you do 😊 It's a bit trickier right now with the permit reservation system going back into effect, but it's 100% worth it!
YT started recommending your videos. I'm more of a snowboarder in Tahoe and want to go winter camping in Yosemite more to avoid the weekend ski resort crowds. I've watched a few of the other snowshoe ones first. This one seemed like a laugh-fest. No powder basket for Adam's poles? For Elise's BD Z-Poles, I used boiling water and a wrench to remove the existing tips on mine. Then it was just a pressure fit for new BD Tech-Tips and the ability to screw on real baskets.
Haha yes we were definitely learning as we went on this one 😂 We actually did have new poles with screw on baskets, and the baskets completely fell off after less than two miles when we trialed them the day before this venture 🙈. Not sure if that was just this company or if it's a widespread problem, but that's why we haven't gone back to basket poles. However, we need to figure out something for this winter snowshoe season -- maybe superglue! Meanwhile, you should def go snow camping in Yosemite. Incredible experience, and we were completely alone out there. ❤️
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I've lost the left basket a few times and carry spares nowadays. But I've been told it's how your wrists twist outward a little when using poles. For the right, that tightens, but the left loosens. Last year I got some splitboard poles where the baskets don't detach... problem solved for me at least.
I suggest staying out of the trees when snow hiking. Don't follow the establisheds trail that are designed for summer travel. ridges and open terrain are the way to go.
Thanks very much, Stan! We'd never heard that before, but it makes a lot of sense. Trying to stay on trail through the trees is definitely what crushed us on this one. Next time, we will try your technique and head for the ridge line. Really appreciate the advice!
It is just a matter of practice with pulling your foot high enough for the snowshoe to level before putting your foot down again. I think she was not lifting high enough and the toe was vertical and slicing in as she stepped down. The incline of the snow exacerbates this toeing into the snow.
Haha, they are not either of those, though they are wonderful all-season pants and dry quickly if they do get wet. However on hikes like this I also bring an extra pair of waterproof fleece lined pants just in case! Kept me toasty in the tent, but otherwise would have been much too hot on this treacherous climb. 😊
@@LiveHardxLoveHard thanks for the info! I may have to look into the leggings you have because mine are way too thin for the colder months and when they’re wet they stay wet. Dressing for winter hikes is all trial and error for me (mainly error haha)
You guys made it! That's an incredible sunset and sunrise! We were there last weekend also. Slush snow is the worst condition for snowshoeing. Did you apply permit online?
Oh, we just missed you! What trail were you on? The wilderness permit issue was a bit chaotic. I called and talked with the rangers multiple times earlier in the week, and was advised that they would be setting up self registration tables at the entrance (no need to book in advance in winter, per the ranger). But, when we got there, the rangers at the entrance had zero idea what we were talking about. They said that they were in the process of shifting everything over after being closed due to the storms, so they told us to go ahead and do our backpacking trip. We left a note on our car at the trailhead, just in case some ranger swooped by and wondered what our car was doing there overnight. I do think that they should be getting those self registration stations up and running soon, though (hopefully!). -E
Absolutely -- there's a long story we told somewhere in the comments about how we bought specific snow poles for this and the baskets popped off and got lost after less than an hour on our beta test for this hike. Anyway, we've had terrible luck with baskets but are looking at a superglue solution this season!
You are absolutely right, Craig, and it actually did come to that for about 20 yards of this one. We didn't film it because we were just struggling so hard, but ya we were straight-up crawling up hill to get back to where we thought the trail was!
Haha you're not wrong 😂 To be fair, we did both have the screw on snow baskets but they simply didn't work. They fell right off the poles within a half mile or so, on two different sets of poles. Twice! What a rip off. Pretty sure the only way to make them work will be super glue, but then of course you'd have them on there forever which is def not what we want. We might just need a dedicated set of winter poles. As for the post-holing, bigger shoes would def be better for float. Though with those heavy ass packs and his 200 lb body, Adam's would have to be Ronald McDonald size 😂
This video has me pondering mountain snow vs. the snow we get here in Michigan. I have never seen mountain snow in person. I have snowshoed in 4 feet deep snow in the upper peninsula of Michigan, using similar type snowshoes as you two are wearing (Tubbs Flex) and never sunk that deep into the snow, even in fluffy snow. Without the snowshoes I would sink down to my waist, but as long as I had them on I would sink in maybe 12". And I'm about 180 lbs. But watching this video, it looks like those snowshoes are doing very little to keep you atop the snow. So I am curious what the difference is with that mountain snow. Is it deeper than it looks? Or was it because there were many air pockets under the snow, due to extremely rough terrain?
That’s a great question. It’s probably some of both. The snow was extremely deep in some places. But there was also a velocity factor where there was a crust but when the shoe would break through the crust it would accelerate down very fast. The packs were also relatively heavy, so Adam probably weighed 230lb with the pack on, and ideally should have had bigger shoes. This was our first overnight snowshoe, so we’re just learning as we go 🤗
Oh man that’s for sure! No one was on the trail the whole day, but when we came down the next morning we saw so many snowshoers coming up! Paved the way so they could enjoy it haha 😂
Haha we're definitely fans of outdoor romance, but truth be told we were way too wimpy cold on this one and just stayed layered up and huddled in our sleeping bags.

@@LiveHardxLoveHard thank you😊❤️
The magnificent cliff is spectacular. What a great video! Someday I wanna go camping not only in Korea but also in a beautiful place like here
Thanks so much my friend! Would love for you to get to come camping here, especially in Yosemite. On the flip side, we would also love to get to go camping in Korea one day :) - E
Beautiful scenery!
Thanks Debbie- Yosemite is incredible in winter!
Such a great adventure, you guys. Your campsite was idyllic--a room with a spectacular view! I'll look forward to the next post. Love you.
I’m surprised you didn’t comment on Adams lamb -like behavior not getting out of the tent for sunrise 🤷🏻♀️🤣 I would say we would love to bring you next time but something tells me you’d opt out on the sleeping in the snow? 🤗
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I would most definitely opt out of sleeping in the snow. He might have slept in, but he deserved it. And no one falls more gracefully than you, babe. XO

Wow wow wow. Love it all. Be well be blessed
Thanks John! You would have loved this one! Might have been tough to go shirtless though 😂
Poor Elise. That snow is so deep! Crazy but so beautiful.
Haha! Well, aside from the transient fear that I would never escape from the snowpack, it was actually quite fun. And worth it for this insane campsite :D Thanks for watching! - E
You two are amazing !!!
Aw, that's so sweet, thank you Cindi! Love sharing the adventures with ya ❤️
Have to say I'm pretty jealous, the view of El Cap looked amazing. Great job
Camping here was pretty unreal. Don’t think we’ve ever gotten to wake up to such stunning views! Worth the challenge of getting there 😂
Thanks for this video. So where did you park your car ? At the Tunnel View lot ? Thanks.
So glad you saw it! We loved this crazy adventure -- and yes, you are exactly right, we parked at tunnel view. ❤️
so happy to see snow .. and play ..
because in my place there is never snow
Wonderful place 🤩🤩
Thanks for sharing my friends 🙏🤗💝
Oh wow, so have you ever seen snow? So glad we could share this beautiful place, and all the snow, with you!
Entertaining and educational with a majestic background, pretty sweet guys - but I’d say that snowfall was not entirely friendly to poor Elise, I think she could use a pair of snow baskets. Thank you both for sharing, btw Elise/Pops sounded great, nice mix!
Thanks Bill! Ya we learned our lesson about always bringing removable snow-baskets. Sometimes in shallower snow we don't want them, but then when it's unexpectedly deep like this we most definitely do. Glad you liked the music -- working on a couple of new songs as we speak! ❤️
Your snowcamping life gets a lot easier if you travel with one of the small snow shovels. :)
Ya we were thinking a snowshoe would suffice, and it kinda did, but a shovel would have been really nice especially when Elise buried her shoe!
@@LiveHardxLoveHard I still can't figure out how she managed that. 10 points! A shovel and an ice axe would have been excellent tools for such an excavation, even though you didn't need an ice axe for the entire rest of the trip. :)

@@LiveHardxLoveHard putting the tent together with no gloves on kind of killed it for me hahaha. But very tempting offer!
Good adventure
looks like fun
Such a blast! Certainly a challenge but 100% worth it!

Haha, this was definitely one exhausting trek, but SOOOO worth it for those views from the tent! Glad we could take you along for this ridiculous adventure 😂

Would skis be a better choice in this kind of deep snow?
This is a fantastic question, Humu. We don't know the answer yet, because we haven't tried skiing on this kind of adventure, but we're thinking of trying it this winter so hopefully we can let you know soon! ❤️
Great Video! Thanks for posting. Can't wait to see more 👍
Hey, thanks so much! Glad we could share this insane adventure with ya 😃

Wow thanks so much for your endless support Suri! You are always so encouraging. This was one of our favorite videos to make so far just because the journey to the top was so ridiculous haha! Glad we could share the insanity and the beauty with you!
One of these days (when I get the gear) I want to do a winter overnighter in the mountains. I don’t think there are many things better than waking up to a snowy sunrise
Yes! Such an incredible and unforgettable experience, especially getting to have a sunrise and sunset like that all to yourself. You just have to be crazy enough to sleep in 15F in a tent haha.
Great fun you guys were having there! Just hilarious at how hard going that was 😂 Amazing job getting up to the camp spot, fantastic views on your doorstep & a great idea of digging that trench as well 👌
Trench was key! And haha yes I was struggling hard on this one! 🤣🤦🏻♀️ such good fun though. Sometimes you just gotta laugh at yourself ❤️
Looks amazing. Dope video ✌
Still can’t believe we woke up here! Thanks for watching :)
Wow guys. We’re suffering here in Houston tx with 28F lol and you guys snowed camp... 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Amazing views! Love the channel. I need to get out to Yosemite this summer!
@@aaalllen Thanks much, that is good to know. Maybe superglue for the left ones or, like you, some dedicated snow poles.
Omg that's. Must be cold
Yes it really was cold. It was ok when the sun was up and we were hiking, but once the sun went down it got really freezing!
Nice nice
So cute... :))))))))
Haha thank you! One of our favorite camping spots ever!
It is just a matter of practice with pulling your foot high enough for the snowshoe to level before putting your foot down again. I think she was not lifting high enough and the toe was vertical and slicing in as she stepped down. The incline of the snow exacerbates this toeing into the snow.
Thanks, that's good advice. I think my bad technique was exacerbated by the heavy pack as well. But... learning as I go 😊 -E
Elise, are those leggings waterproof or insulated? I don’t know how you did that with only 1 layer on the bottom!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍🏼
Thanks Oscar! It was very cold, but very worth it! 🥶
Need bigger snow baskets
Absolutely -- there's a long story we told somewhere in the comments about how we bought specific snow poles for this and the baskets popped off and got lost after less than an hour on our beta test for this hike. Anyway, we've had terrible luck with baskets but are looking at a superglue solution this season!
Have you ever tried just crawling on your hands and knees? Sometimes thats the only way.
You are absolutely right, Craig, and it actually did come to that for about 20 yards of this one. We didn't film it because we were just struggling so hard, but ya we were straight-up crawling up hill to get back to where we thought the trail was!
Ancient Indian knowledge - 2 under a blanket are warmer than one. Also, white man need bigger snow-shoes & powder baskets ;-)
😊😁😄
❤️ ♥️ 💜
Haha this one was crazy, Riaan. But a great learning experience!
This was our first overnight snowshoe, so we’re just learning as we go 🤗
Y’all broke it for others.
Oh man that’s for sure! No one was on the trail the whole day, but when we came down the next morning we saw so many snowshoers coming up! Paved the way so they could enjoy it haha 😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
🙈🥶😂
best way to keep warm when tenting in the snow is to fuck your way into the morning. i hope u guys really steamed up the tent
Haha we're definitely fans of outdoor romance, but truth be told we were way too wimpy cold on this one and just stayed layered up and huddled in our sleeping bags.
