    Car Type: New York City Subway R160B
    Traction: Siemens SITRAC 2-Level IGBT-VVVF
    PWM Pattern:
    Asynchronous (400 Hz) → Advanced PWM (Several steps. I used the word "Multi-Pulse Mode(s)" for them in this video.)
    Sound Characteristics:
    The carrier frequency during the asynchronous modulation, which is used in the low speed range is constant at 400Hz. Siemens seems to use this 400 Hz carrier frequency for so many trains (Munich Tram GT6N, Daegu Subway 1000 Series, Singapore MRT C651, the latter half of the asynchronous modulation of the Taipei Metro C321 and the "Singing Trains" in Japan and Brazil, etc.).
    After that, during the synchronous modulation, advanced PWM modes are used in several steps. In particular, the pulse mode just after the asynchronous modulation has a high-pitched sound and is very noticeable.
    In the pulse mode used above a certain level of speed, the sound level decreases at 0:36 and 0:38, and then increases momentarily. At 0:58, the volume is also low, but this is probably due to the sensor being misaligned during recording. I recorded these sounds while taking express trains, and this pulse mode was used at the highest speed in these recorded sections.In the section where the speed is higher, it may switch to the 1-pulse mode, so I would like to revisit and record.
    * The AC traction PWM sound shown in this video is recorded by a sensor which is placed on the floor of a train car near its traction motor. This sensor is made by myself just using a 100mH inductor.
    * Due to the resolution of the spectrogram software, the frequency displayed in this video may include some error. Thank you for your understanding.
    * This sound is recorded in March 2019.
    * Sorry, I am NOT taking requests for recordings.

    The Warsaw Metro Siemens Inspiro uses a slightly modified version of this, but using 550 Hz carrier based pulsing instead of 400 Hz.

    400hz sounds like alstom.
    Edit: I just figured out that in siemens, 400hz sounds alike because in the first part of acceleration of alstom, it reaches 380hz.

    This is cool! It’s interesting to me how the actual propulsion sound from the inductor sounds a little different than what we would normally hear with our own ears in the system!! Very interesting!!

    I remember used to hearing the 400 Hz sound pwm. I think now there is a different frequency.

    I understand noise comes from the motor windings as they're being switched which is caused by the controller because the motors need artificial 3-phase; However, I don't understand why the frequency / pitch is sweeping / changes with speed, and especially why there are steps where it jumps as the train changes speed

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy 8 місяців тому

      All the changes are just down to efficiency: at certain speeds, different 'modes' (frequencies, pulse-count, voltage, whatsoever) the motor behaves differently as an electronic load. By changing all those parameters as the speed increases, the traction-energy is used most efficiently (EDIT: changed 'officially' for efficiently, I guess it was very late when I posted this comment...)

    Actually the synchronous pattern is 15 pulses (CHM)→7 pulses (CHM)→5 pulses (CHM, 2 steps)→3 pulses→wide 3 pulses→1 pulse _(not heard here)._ The braking replaces 3 pulses with wide 5 pulses (CHM). CHM stands for Current Harmonic Minimum.

    • @PmtaROBLOX
      @PmtaROBLOX Рік тому

      what exactly is a harmonic minimum?

    • @TheSearleFamily123
      @TheSearleFamily123 Рік тому +1

      @@PmtaROBLOX The “Current” in Current Harmonic Minimum is supposed to mean electric current (i.e. the amount of charge flowing), not current as in “right now”. Sorry for misleading.

    Nice sounds! It would be cool to get a recording of the PATH PA-5 motors as they sound similar to the R160B, although doing so is going to be a pain in the ass as photography, videotaping and audio recordings on PATH are prohibited for bulls*** reasons.

    Surprised to see this as IGBT, as the Keikyu N2100 has a GTO also from Siemens and has the exact same scripted pulses, therefore giving the same traction sounds. GTO and IGBT are different, but how do these two become so related?

      You have to make the sensor on your own. However, once you get at least an IC recorder, an inductor, and a TRRS cable, you can catch these sounds by setting the inductor on the vehicle floor above its motor.

      I put an inductor (100 mH) to a TRRS cable adapter, then I inserted a TRRS cable connected to an IC recorder.
      You can record this sound by putting this on a train car's floor just above its traction motor.
